History / Defying Germaniztion in 1901 Polish boy writes 'German girls are ugly' [128]

Did Poland give up its Sovereignty voluntarily or violently?

she did so pretty violently - she was on booze, staggered and in a rage - hell with my sovereignty she exclaimed throwing herself at the first neighbours she encountered calling them to put her in shackles so she can have fianlly have peace :)

Study / Quality of Polish classes for foreigners [7]

I don't know I am not an insider in the industry

still I would like to make a general remark - public higher education institutions used to house and tutor students from exotic places in commie times (Arabs and Africans mostly) - so they have decades of experience teaching Polish to foreigners - some newer private institutions may not be up to the mark if their staff don't have such a background

yes give Lubuskie back to Germany - there are so many people there looking forward to the return of the Germans - unlike what it was in 1905 in Wielkopolska - Jews were once illegal in Europe - seems like what is legal depends on who is making the law doesn't it - to paraphrase some famous saying

It's clear that Poland was annexed into Prussia - not occupied. It wasn't as if there was some military occupation and the people living under military rule - they were living under clear Prussian civilian rule. And for that reason, the country was annexed and not occupied.

oh, man - was it anexed peacefully? did the population never revolt against this anexation? sometimes it seems nuances are too much for you delphi (and actually they are not so much nuances)

Language / Weekend vs Łikend [15]

Pennboy wrote but according to Admin he does not have to know anyone replied to him:
I Agree there way to many English words being introduced into the Polish language. A Polish word can easily be made up for them.

the problem weekend and parking are perfect short compact good sounding words end they fit the fabric of Polish language perfrectly - if you wanted a Polish equivalent of weekend you end up with two word multisylable phrase or some nasty contractions which look and sound pretty ugly or perhaps a strange neologism (a new word - some such neologisms did catch on in the past but many never gained any popularity) - the same goes to komputer

USA, Canada / Polish-American mutilation of the Polish language [75]

Computer is a new word, however, in Icelandic they have literally translated it to be "box with numbers". Poles can do the same but they choose not to.

maybe because komputer is not just 'a box with numbers' - btw before Polish adopted the name komputer we had 'maszyny liczące' (literally counting machines) - it appears though that komputer is much more a handy word than 'maszyna licząca' ('maszyna licząca can still be used in more general meaning)

Language / Weekend vs Łikend [15]

I think many young internet users (most of the youth are internet users anyways) are not familiar with weekend - but łikend is not a dictionary word definitely - weekend is

Sobniedź, kontyg, soniela. :)

ale potworki - ugly little monsters

Weekend

So what's the proper word for weekend? I'm all ears...

Parking

as above.

You mean to tell me these words have always been used in the Polish language? I don't think so.

the thing is Polish does not have (and never had) equivalent words - the English words just came in handy (Polish can adopt English words easily and make them fit into the fabric the language (it was a bit different story with Latin for example) - it is a different story (and a quite new phenomenon) when things like job titles are directly accepted into Polish and left in the origianl shape - Human Resources (Polish had Kadry/Dział Kadr before), Managing Director - there is even a direct translation of this dyrektor zarządzający still the English term gets used more and more often (like we can't incorporate English words into Polish polonizing it somewhat - btw managing director was simply dyrektor in Polish (dyrektor was also headmaster and similar - the main person in charge simply)

whole Russian phrases are used in every day Polish ('biez poł litra nie rozbieriosz', 'ruskaja tiechnika - gniotsja nie łamiotsja','wsio rowno/rawno' ) and hardly anybody has qualms about it - in my opinion it just gives more flavour to Polish

Rather disgraceful, if you ask me. Language should be respected, not mutilated.

I agree. Those Scots should learn to speak English the proper way instead of sounding like a bum begging for money.

I love it :) heheh - and hey what about these young Brits who can't speak proper English either (suppo'ive anyone - look becomes some strange loo' and I always wandered how do they say 'hot' :P:P:P:P:P)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Because it was reported?

why wasn't stuff hanging there since 2007 reported - it has TVP2 signs on it - nobody cares - why - because it causes no troubles to the ruling prime minister and his company - had things like that happened while PiS-led coalition was ruling there would have been massive outcry in the media from Tuamotu to Jamaica of an outrageaous violation of freedom of speech in Poland (you could see some cabarets freely making fun of Kaczyńskis in the height of their power in the state run TV - and guess what the jokes were mostly flat out primitive)

Chinese manager: No ja sie nie znam na budowie. Ja pracował w restauracji.
Tusk: No jak się nie znasz na budowie, to co się bierzesz za budowanie?
Chinese manager: A pan sie co wziął za rządzenie?

it must have been very very painful

you have to watch it, it's worth it - they really do a good job (good acting and stuff) -
youtube.com/user/Filmydokumentalne1#p/u/2/lqpI3SmRR00 - if you move the pointer to 37:45 you will only wait a couple of minutes to watch the "Polish cabinet meeting in Peru" :)

so why was this 'vulnerable' stuff removed so soon?? while many other cabarets hang for months or years - need examples??? ... - - this one was posted in 2007 - nobody cares because it does not imply Tusk is no good at governing the country - they (PO) know very well that ridiculing political opponents is a powerful weapon (they kept on and still keep on ridiculing PiS (which I don't deny PiS is asking for after 2007 parliamentary loss)

and about some cabarets - yes some don't want to have their stuff readily available on the web - while I doubt Robert Górski is among these

btw you don't have to wait the whole half an hour to see 'the Peru cabinet meeting' - just click on the right minutes 37:45 and the wait will be much shorter

maybe we are in the terrible danger of these things?

another classic ... was removed from youtube because of 'multiple breaking of copyright laws' (on behalf of Polish state TV) - read: Tusk realizes when they joke about him it is not going to be fun around the ballot box

but I am digging and I will find it

and I did - but you have to be patient - cabinet meeting in Peru featuring Chinese infrastructure construction manager ;)

... - you have to be patient because the cabinet meeting starts at 37:45

(they have went after all shorter pieces that only included the cabinet meeting for the obvious reason the youth won't be waiting over half an hour to see this)

for the lacking in patience - the clous is this: Tusk asks the Chinese 'manager' Why are you taking to building motorways if you don't know how? and the Chinese manager says 'Why have you taken to leading the nation?'

seriously what - haven't you noticed that after Mariusz Kamiński anounced the scandal around gambling with the PO politicians in the main roles he was fired and replaced by some nice chaps who are friends with Mr Tusk? there were even more serious allegations against Mr Drzewiecki that the 'right' media completely distorted or ridiculed

the CBA (completely PO-run at the moment) is right in the footsteps of Palikot now - what PiS raised as serious offences by Palikot was hushed up equally by most media as well as by PO as long as Palikot was part of PO - I am guessing he is receiving a warning now should he have any success in promoting his political movement he would be then punished (in case someone does not know Palikot's parliamentary campaign in 2005 or 2007 was 'financed' by retired people and students who often paid 10 000 PLN - at the same time Palikot was hiding his fortune from his ex-wife and claimed to live off grants from some mysterious fund in Louxembourg - of course anyone less than completely naive would presume Palikot financed his parliamentary campaing from his own purse only hired people to stand for him in papers)

What do you consider to be the reason they are ahead in the Poles' polls?

the lousiness of the oppostion (both PiS and SLD - SLD won't be a productive movement any time soon and Jarosław Kaczyński got rid of the brightest people he had in the course of recent years (by being clumsy and making idiotic political moves or statements and by straightforward dislike of too independent people - in 2005 PiS united a broad spectrum of people who wanted a postive change for Poland - people dropped from PiS mainly because of Kaczyński's apodictical ways

Beret Commando, the most dangerous squad in Poland.

in a couple of years you will see a completely different yet much more dangerous squads running around the streets - and these will be the current youth of 12 to15 - raised without any authority except the media and peer pressure - you will see the effects - banditry and lack of tolerance - and I pretty much guess you will feel it very directly - you will then long for mohair grandma squads but there will be hardly any left till then

Most foreigners in this country are quite, quite happy for Poland to be a regional leader, rather than being laughed at by the world.

hhahhahaha hiiiiiihihiihihi hhahahah a regional leader hhahahah heheheh ooooooo LOL hehehehe

looks like you are a bit gullible delphi (or is it that what Mr President of the USA says you take for truth)

Selling Polish assets? Well, there has been some privatisation - but the Government has retained strategic shares in many industries, as well as loading the rules against private investors. I don't recall what company it is, but at least one large company is minority-owned by the Government, yet the Government has the majority of votes.

do you think selling Lotos refinery in Gdańsk is a good strategic move? I don't think so

PiS once blocked EU-Russia talks because the aim was to allow Russian buy-up of energy companies around Europe - PiS wanted a symmetry in relations between EU and Russia (EU capitals are mostly banned and shoved out of Russia's energy sector)

What about SLD? What concrete proposals are we to see in their manifesto?

none - except for gays rights - they are pretty devoid of creative strategic thinking for Poland and what they only care for is their own welfare (sadly more and more PiS deputies seem to go in these ruts)

such as slashing miners salaries and closing unprofitable State-owned enterprises

there wouldn't be people to work there for lower wages, pal - aren't their retirement privileges withdrawn already btw?

I don't know the ins and the outs but I would've thought repaying people for the property or land they lost is the decent thing to do? Why is there a problem with that?

because they have no legal rights to the property according to Polish law? (mainly because of the inheritance law that was in place for decades only to be replaced very recently (and for pretty obscure reasons)

History / Polabia back to Slavs? [113]

Don't forget - that same editor did far more for his country than most people.

precisely what?

Silesia was the most popular tourist destination in German times, before Bavaria and the sea. Hardly no one knows this anymore. The region has the biggest number of castles and stately homes in Europe, and Jelenia Gora valley with its huge number of (royal) castles and parks was once compared to the landscape around Potsdam (Sanssouci), a world heritage site

you are mixing things pal - Silesia loses just as much of its appeal to German tourists by the sheer fact it is not German anymore and Poles live there - I am not against the concept that some areas could try to rehash the German culture so that they can attract German tourists (I wouldn't count on tourist from other countries that much in this endavour) but I doubt it can be achieved on larger scale for many reasons - one is the lack of balance in the Poles, the balance and confidence the Czechs have when they attract German tourist even to the areas formerly inhabited largely by Sudeten Germans - the Poles would either be very defensive or servilistic - as for the Sudetic spas - I feel perfectly all right with the current state - were there more German 'baders' there wouldn't enough space for Poles there (not that financial scope) - you can't expand the Kurorten indefinitely - I seriously doubt there is much space for their expansion actually - it is quite another story with just mountain hiking - there is not much in the sense of touristic infrastracture in the Polish Sudetes and there is room for great expansion in case German tourists could be attracted - but it requires a lot of people to change their attitudes (even those most simple people who live there) - I can't imagine German tourists wanting to see shabby, neglected towns and villages with a good deal of inhabitanst acting like louts - there is a big difference between Tatra mountains and their inhabitants and those of Sudety - still it won't be easy to attract massive German tourism to Śląsk and Sudety in any case

History / Polabia back to Slavs? [113]

And some people want Polabia "back"? Seriously?

some delusional, misguided, megalomaniac do - however no reasonable people do

Silesia for instance could be a top tourist destination in Europe, but no one cares.

hardly - it is true that the lack of the connection between the populace and the reamining material culture left by German inhabitants plays a role here (among many other things) - but you are much overestimating the atractiveness of the area now - maybe the Sudetes can attract more tourists but not much else in Silesia

Yay for obscure 11th century kings, boo to something that the kids can relate to!

it is a conscious policy by those who were not playing really clean - like a president who emptied his remaining IPN archive - like the editor of the main oppinion-making Polish daily who actually misapriopriated the paper from Solidarity and its Polonia benefactors

do you still have questions??

Language / How do Poles feel about foreigners learning their language? [105]

"Don't try to learn Polish, most Poles don't like it when you speak their language,"

I am Polish to begin with - actually a good couple of foreigners who live/d in Poland enjoyed a status of TV celebrities pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Aiston and pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steffen_M%C3%B6ller were the most popular (Moeller even went on to write a book about Poland for German market which was also sold in Polish translation - the book was pretty successful in Germany)

the thing is if people know you are English/American they want to practice their English 'on you' and are therefore reluctant to talk Polish and let you practice your Polish skills

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

The truth is simple. Some Poles hated Jews and helped the Germans kill them.

if that were the case no Jews would survive in Poland, son - sometimes think on your own for a while - if the hate of Jews was so common and intense noone hiding Jews could stand a chance at not being discovered and denounced - yet the figures tell something very different

Jews were seen as unloyal to the Polish state, untrustworthy and difficult econimic competition by Poles before the war - some politicians theorized Poland without Jews and the ways to accomplish it but to my knowlegde no Polish politician ever imagined killing Jews as a means to such a goal

perhaps you read many books - yet it looks like most were pretty one sided or prejudiced

some personages who openly raised the Jewish issue in Poland before the war - see Zofia Kossak-Szczucka - were later during the war active in conspirational help for Jews (there was even a network of such conspirators which for example involved catholic monasteries)

don't you think it's pretty pointless to know your ancestry? I have only vague notion of my ancestry beyond the grandparents and I can still happily live without much knowledge of my great grandparents not to mention earlier

if I have Mongol, Armenian, Jewish, canibal, Hun, Gypsy, German, Russian, ***** blood in me it makes no difference to me - what can I do to change it even if I wanted to? look at people like some mixed race celebrities in Poland (there are a couple of such people in Poland) - their native tounge is Polish - are they not Polish? only a dumbfuck would say they aren't

well - it looks like they were influential - but hardly as influential as in 18th century - there were state run gymnasia and they were much more common than those run by church institutions

I seem to also recall that the Jesuits had a stranglehold on a lot of education - though the details escape me.

I am no expert here but Jesuit near-monopoly on education was a matter of 17th and 18th centuries not the interbellum of the 20th century - there were public elementary schools which were free of charge from what I can gather, there were later gymnasia but most peasants could not afford sending their children there cause gymnasia were in towns (no buses back then) - I guess gymnasia were still free of charge - I have no idea about higher education

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

They were Polish though - as citizens of Poland, what would it matter if they were Jewish, Ukrainian, Polish, Kashubian, Lemko, whatever? As long as they were Polish citizens and working to better Poland - what's the issue?

the issue was 1. mistrust of Jews - it was not that obvious Jews were working for a better Poland for everyone 2. economical advantage that Jews had ('wasze ulice, nasze kamienice')

I am not 100 per cent sure of that info but I once read 80 per cent of American lawyers are Jewish - and have a look at some strange rulings of American courts (like a guy who received a compensation from prison authorities for not guarding him carefully enough which was 'direct reason' why he broke his leg running from the prison - welcome to America heheh) - looks like some people there have little decency (you need to have no decency to deny common sense in a court verdict) - I wouldn't like such a situation in Poland

Is there really such a thing as "too many educated people" in a country? Come on, gumishu - you and I both know that it was just a typical post-Pilsudski policy

ever heard that universities have certain capacities of how many people they can teach? - if you are letting more Jews you are letting less Poles pretty simple
