News / Was Kaczyński behind the presidential veto? [65]

Uh-uh, pal, not if ol' lady Angie can help it!! She'll steer the ship back on course, headwinds and political rip currents notwithstanding. You just wait and see:-)

News / Was Kaczyński behind the presidential veto? [65]

People in the West of Europe are concerned that Poland may slide further away from democracy. Although if Duda's veto cannot be overridden, then perhaps there's less cause for concern:-)

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

Correct. More accurately would be to state "GERMAN death camps located on Nazi-held Polish territory." The other way, it sounds as though the camps themselves were both a Polish concept as well as inception, a statement which is historically false!!

Without Hitler, Oswiecim would have remained merely another small Polish village and wouldn't have had to be "renamed".

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

The lessons of Treblinka shall always remain within the collective memory of both victims and their survivors! Tire as many may of the nagging reminders from such unutterable atrocities, leave us not forget that only through the complicity of the gentile world were the events at Treblinka, Majdanek, Sobibor along with numerous others possible. Embarrassingly though, the WJC back in the '30's refused to recognize Nazi horrors for what they were, and Roosevelt sold out to the Senator Breckenridge Longs of this world, the isolationists and the fear mongers.

Both Christian as well as Jew suffered in Treblinka! That the Jews were allowed a special "place of honor" among those slaughtered was Hitler's choice, not ours. No rational, sentient being SEEKS victimhood; it is foisted upon those who bore the sole disgrace of being so few in number, and yet so recognizable, that their isolation in the camps took place as effectively as it had.

The actual lesson here is that such is not a Polish, a German, a French or an American phenomenon. Hatred is a universal disease which needs feeding.

Education is therefore the sole key to salvation:-)

Life / From Sweden to Zakopane (permanently), possible? [23]

When in Poland, I found much of the architecture in cities such as Szczecin/Stettin much like that of certain Hanseatic towns such as Visby in Sweden etc.

True, many young Swedes, teens primarily, do tend to like speaking English with foreigners, similar to young Europeans everywhere:-)

Polish is a richly inflected language and so I hope you'll eventually get more into it the longer your stay in Poland!

Law / Why does Poland not have a repatriation office? [38]

..however, the similarity between the two cases is that both groups felt themselves entitled to citizenship status in their country of ancestral, rather than actual, origin:-)

Law / Why does Poland not have a repatriation office? [38]

Funny you should ask, Jerzy. In fact, the only "crime" which any of those applicants petitioning ever committed, was bilking the German gov't out of funds:-) There may well have been others of which I'm simply not aware.

Law / Why does Poland not have a repatriation office? [38]

A curious relationship connected with the attempt a number of years back to repatriate one-time "Volga Germans" from Russia, who were born to parents both of German descent, yet living in Russia for several generations, knew only Russian and no German, yet petitioned for German citizenship.

Caused a major headache for the German court system, but was eventually resolved and the bulk of the more frivolous cases were merely thrown out, period, end of story:-)

Law / Why does Poland not have a repatriation office? [38]

That is to say, "equal status before the law regardless of religious origins". All right, I see now. You're saying furthermore that the Duda-Kaczynski-Szydlo regime is discriminating against certain Poles based on location instead of merit.

I can well imagine how imminently frustrating this must be.

Law / Why does Poland not have a repatriation office? [38]

I see your point of view. Kind of agree that from where you as a native, average Pole are sitting, the "majority" Poles ought to be given first priority, the "minority" Poles aka Poles of Jewish extraction, should wait in line until it's THEIR turn, is that about it?

Guess so.

And rightly so, I might add:-) If they were Polish-speaking citizens who happened to be of the Jewish rather than the Roman Catholic faith, were booted out of Poland or suffered so during the War that they were literally forced into exile, then why not oughtn't they be "repatriated", considering that their "patria" of origin is Poland, and not Israel, Canada, England, or the States?

Seems rather silly to deny them their birthright merely because some numbskulls out there in la-la-land can't accept Jewish people in Polish society.
Polish-speaking, assimilated Jews above all, have contributed richly to Polish science and literature (both in Poland and abroad), e.g. Julian Tuwim, Tadeusz Rozewicz, Kasimir Funk, Boleslaw Lesmian, opera singer Jan Keipura and of course, the great Jan Brzechwa, among others.

Are they not "Poles" too?

Study / Attending University other than one used for Poland's Student Visa application [8]

First off, heartiest congrats, Yuna!

Second of all, I'd contact the second school to which you've been accepted and inquire ASAP as to their procedures in this matter:-)

Which country are you from? If you don't know much Polish, you might want to think about taking some kind of crash course before getting more deeply into the language:-) Many universities throughout Europe naturally offer bilingual programs as well as courses taught in English by native English-speaking faculty for international students pursuing careers in international law, management, IT etc.

Powodzenia,

?? If Jews were or are Polish citizens, which we'll accept as factual evidence, how then are the Jews being benefited "disproportionately to their numbers..."? How many Jews, i.e. anyone who professes the Jewish faith or ethnicity, in fact live in Poland? The majority nowadays live in the capital, as far as I've read. Krakow has some Jewish-style restaurants, a cemetery and formerly Jewish living quarters, plus, Israeli high schoolers are required to take an excursion there at least once in their life. Other than that, where pray are the Jews in Poland?

News / 60% of Poles say Szydło's government should resign [238]

Ya think Polish "legalese" is bad, try German! Lord knows I translated that stuff for long enough. Nearly drove me crazy, but the pay was so darned good, I thought, to hell with it:-)
