I wish you foreigners would stop philosophying about what Polish people think. He was a very poppular president for Polish patriots and looked after our interests, but not for ex-communists and guests like you who have no interest in BÓG, HONOR i OJCZYZNA. The fallen at Katyń stood for that. To you lefties it is an alien concept worthy of only ridicule and destruction.

Alright, do a test. Head over to the guys standing around drinking in front of the corner shop...ask them what they thought about Kaczynski, I'm sure you'll get glowing praise. Even a week ago.

We foreigners are making observations. I guess that's hard to swallow for people wrapped up in their politics. Anyway, yea, I'm a lefty, real far off to the left... There is a different between being a true conservative and being a populist nationalist. Huge difference. That is probably the reason for his approval ratings before he died, as well as why PiS lost the elections. God, honor, and homeland are all good, but fix the f*cking roads. How about making it easier to do business? NFZ reforms anyone?

Not saying that PO is doing any better of a job, but the race to the bottom isn't all that impressive.

Kaczynski would quickly get vicious when it came to politics, Lech was at least more reserved there compared to his brother. If you don't agree with someone politically, denounce them!

Anyway, for you and the 20% of Poles who still supported Kaczynski, I'm sorry for your loss. I think he was a good guy, believed in what he said, wasn't that great of a statesman and in the end didn't really get much done for the average Pole.

There is a reason the church attendance is on the decline. People are moving from the countryside to the cities and realizing that the Church isn't the only social club around, and their neighbors won't ostracize them for not being there. Politically, it's probably the wrong horse to hitch up to if you want to reflect the changing attitude here.

Anyway, I will keep blurting out what I think, even if you don't agree with it. Maybe if I changed my tone and supported your political position, you might not have an issue with me voicing my opinion?

Well, some Polish people. That's one of the reasons he was fairly decisive and ended up becoming an unpopular president.

I don't doubt that I would hear negative comments from old people who congregate in parks sharing bottles of cheap wine without the need of using glasses.

You would never hear a bad word uttered from the guys that hang out in front of corner shop. Possibly his most ardent supporters. They seem to buy into populism and nationalism even quicker than most people.

You can easily see 100 feet to the crashed plane from the camera.

Lets say that visibility is 500ft, that means the crew has a little under 2 seconds to react to things ahead of it when traveling at 270kph, which is around the approach speed.

When people tell me that there is a "THICK FOG" or "SOUP" for weather, I'm thinking you can't see 30 feet in front of you like when we had fog here in the US where I live.

For a non precision approach, this was well thick enough. With your 30 ft, you'll have plenty of time to react to things in front of you.

Since this airport would undoubtedly be used by foreigners for this special occasion maybe the pilot thought the airport had it.

You don't assume anything. You have charts, and you plan your approach before you take off.

Also how long did it take for the Polish journalists to get to the crash site after the crash?

No clue, but they were in Katyn, so they probably had access to a window. Are there any reports by Polish eye witnesses that the weather was good?

think they would have prepared it better, especially with the ground detecting ILC component that most airplanes equipped with this, like this plane, needed for landing.

It is ridiculously expensive to put an ILS in place. There are quite a few airports here in Poland without an ILS.

As for this "Thick fog" thing, I find this suspect.

Reason enough for the IL to return to Moscow after a pair of approaches.

There was also video shot at the crash site showing very low ceilings.

For the fog not to work, you'd have to make sure that all 300k people in Smolensk played along, as well as all the Poles that were there (including a gaggle of journalists).

Or...it's exactly as reported. The "we are all at fault" sounds like they wished they would have closed the airport...which would have caused a sh*t storm due to the current state of international relations. Could you imagine the response from Kaczynski? Just imagine that for a second.

Some information has already come out, Jed. 3 days ago, Andrzej Semeret made some comments.

I think they will wait until the dead have been laid to rest. Hopefully they will wait until the full report comes out. Anything that will be released now will be purely what happened, not why it happened...and that will mean that the full brunt will be on the pilot instead of the organization as a whole (and the impact of international relations on the jobs of ATC, etc).

Thank you for that, Jed. Only your government, though, might like it.

What would the benefit be to Russia to make a martyr out of a President who was nearing the end of his term and about to be sent home?

The representatives of the military on that flight have done quite a bit to make the Polish military the capable force it is today.

There was no ash below 5000 metres - so they flew on that altitude. Where's risk in that?

What happens if you hit IMC, you can't get on top of it... What happens if you do hit ash? It does eventually come down.

You're guessing wrongly.

So you would have been in the "at least the pilot was safe" camp?

It's seriously horrible to read things like that, especially considering the reason for the season... Some Air Forces take risk very seriously and manage it at a different level than others.

Why would you compare the presence or absence of components on one type of plane to those of a completely different aircraft? They are built differently for a reason, are they not?

The approach is what matters, not the plane. Why would you need TAWS or a glideslope receiver for an NDB approach? These approaches only bring you down to a certain height above the runway, at which point you land the plane visually.

I mean, it's obviously you don't know what you're talking about, but I'm really bored.

You don't need TAWS to land a plane.

You don't need a glide slope receiver to land a plane.

You first have to realize, that there are different types of instrument approaches.

Each one of those approaches will have different minimums that you can fly down to. For an NDB approach, the minimums will be much higher than for an ILS

If ONLY BOTH TLS and TAWS were removed/tampered with, how would the plane land?

TAWS doesn't help you land, it only keeps you from flying into the ground.

The plane would land just like any other non precision approach. You would fly the approach down to a certain height, and go missed if you didn't see the runway. You fly the glide slope based on your ground speed, rate of descent, and distance from a fixed point.

There was never a fixed ILS at Smolensk.

the TAWS system on the plane was removed/tampered with during its servicing in Russia

You'd still have to tamper with the GPS receivers, the radar altimeter, and the charts (or the altimeters). TAWS is not a single point of failure.

Jeez...these are not really tall trees he hit....he was flying pretty dam low to hit them....

The last page has a nice cross section of the flight path and the terrain.

I am starting to believe this pilot may well have deliberatly flown well below the safe height in order to try to catch sight of the runway...an incredibly dangerous thing to do...

Sadly , when they did see the ground , it was too late to avoid hitting it...

Likewise. I think that the big question that will need to be answered is why that decision was taken. Plenty of people have pointed out that these weren't newly minted pilots.
