Life / Immigration Free Poland is Not Being Racist [194]

Did Iran ask how the tens of thousands of Polish refugees it admitted in the Second World War would integrate ?

How many of those folks (or their ancestors) are still there?

How many of of the Merkeljugend are expected to return to Syria when the war ends?

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

Sad that people judge all those ordinary people, some religious, some not, who are Muslim by the most extreme expressions of it

That is true. But beyond the extremist issue, mainstream muslim values tend to not.... jibe well with a European social context.

Most European countries prioritize secular education and institutions and try to stress the social equivalence of the sexes. Most normal muslims don't. Mainstream muslim attitudes on gender relations means that very few women work which goes counter to the prevailing trends across the continent.

So even though the vast majority of muslims are not terrorists their values tend to work against their success in Europe and the failure tends to reinforce traditionalism and self-segregation.

The experiment of muslim immigration to Europe has lasted over 50 years and has failed pretty much everwhere. Why continue it?

we Serbians can say

We Americans can say that Santa Claus lives in North Pole, Alaska and drives a rocket sled powered by unicorn farts. That doesn't make it true.

The survey on the streets

That's almost new (for you) just under two years old! At this rate you'll catch up to the present in.... 2021?

Russia as protector of Slavs. Unfortunately, Russia too often failed in that role

Russia has never seen itself as the protector of Slavs, only a few Balkan nationalists are deluded enough to think that. Tell the Slavic countries that Russians have oppressed that the Russians are their "protectors" and you might learn a few new words...

I've been reading about the Crimean economy being essentially in the toilet since then.

Russians have that somewhere (as they Polish say). Krym nash! And the Crimeans can all starve for all they care. Someone with contacts there told me that both the indigenous tatars and those who had managed to negotiate post Soviet reality had no problem with being part of Ukraine, the only ones that really wanted to be part of Russia were those who were lost without a big-daddy governmnet taking care of them and who were easily bought off with the promise of higher welfare payments (any similarity to Poland in 2015 is purely, coincidental, I'm sure).

Mass protests and blocking of roads

Dude, maybe you can't read a calendar (would oddly make sense) but your vids are all from 2014!

Neo-Russian imperialism is not, and will not, be anything that Polish people (or people who have Polish interests at heart) are going to get excited about.

how does Novorossiya still exists if the Russians gave up on it?

Why is it just this little tiny strip at the edge (traditionally the most backward part), it was supposed to make up something like half of Ukraine.

Why are you posting against political interests on a Polish forum?

You are not going to convince Polish people that Russia is a friend or potential ally of Poland. It never has been and it isn't now.

On to Kiev and on to Lvov

And doubtless on to Warsaw, Budapest and Prague... what a bunch of deranged freaks.

Novorossiya is an idea...

Yes. A failed one. Why doesn't it ever occur to the Russian government to not invade or bomb neighboring countries?

Russia is a terrible neighbor and political alliance with Russia is akin to nationalist suicide.

just as effectively wrecked Russia too.

The thing with his domestic supporters.... they don't care. They're willing to undergo huge deprivations for the "prestige" of Russian power being feared somwhere in the world. He doesn't have to look out after the economic interests of most of the population as long as he can sell the idea that russia is (again!) a Great Power.

Russians have abandoned the Novorossiya project

Ages ago. It was never a project, it was a plan for a land bridge to Crimea (an expensive white elephant at present). Ukrainians made short work of the idea of novorossija except in an area of notable backwardness who didn't organize fast enough.

Are you saying they're giving up there now too? Is the passport thing part of cutting them loose?

News / Poland, still corrupt, but not as bad as Czech/Hungary & Italy [36]

It seems to me that you're willing to tolerate people with close PZPR connections so long as they're now members of PiS.

Isn't that part of the PiS racket? I'd assume the message is "Join us (for a fee) and get a clean bill of political health, otherwise we'll proscribe your asrses"

News / Poland, still corrupt, but not as bad as Czech/Hungary & Italy [36]

Everyone in the corps, incłluding ambassadors, consuls, attachés and other staff that had contacts with secret services prior to 1990 will lose their jobs.

What about resident non-citizens?

And what is meant by "contacts"? Anyone in public life ended up having some type of contact with them (including JK I'd bet a small fortune).

This is the exact opposite of the kind of reckoning with the past that is actually needed - arbitrary witch hunts agains the ruling party's enemy of the moment (very PRL in and of itself).

Unless someone bribed an official to appoint him, that is not corruption.

No, it's blatent incompetence, which doesn't seem to bother the government as long as the "right" people are wasting public monies....

These migrants have skills, social security money to pump into Poland's economy

Well this OP doesn't seem very interested in pumping money into Poland's economy, getting an in to the EU seems to be the primary focus...

Law / Is there any risk in being asked to become a shareholder in a limited company in Poland? [27]

Take it from someone who learned the hard way. Once you start explaining, you lose

Absolutely true. It's generally completely okay in Poland to say "No, I can't" to requests. If they want explanations then my intuition says they're up to something.

I'd also add, politely decline and do not give them the chance to try to change your mind. Letting people explain why they want something in Poland means "Okay, I'll probably give in if you beg and plead and threaten enough". Run away if you have to but don't listen to their explanations once you've decided to say no.

-Jej Polszczyzna jest lepsza od twojej!

Od kiedy pracownia umie mówic? miałeś na mysli słowo "pracownica"?

As a non-native speaker I think angielszczyzna, while usually bookish, can work in the context of the story since I've seen it used in kind of... ironic ways.

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

Not so much mythical perhaps as symbolic and allegoric

I chose the word myth because I actually heard an RC priest used the word (an RC TV program of some kind) what he meant was symbolic and allegorical but I was struck by the word choice.

Maf says most Christians reject Creationism

I don't know about most..... IIRC the modern Catholic party line is that a lot of the bible is myth. That doesn't mean they don't believe it's true, but that it's god talking to humanity in a way that humanity could understand. Catholics can take the book of genesis literally if they want to, but it's not an article of faith (or whatever it's called).

Lots of protestants have ideas liek that too. And lots of protestants from the US are very much into literalism (and lots of other generally crazy ideas, I used to enjoy keep track of them though I've fallen out of practice).

The crucial point isn't so much what particular individuals believe but how much diversity of opinion is allowed both within and between branches and for individual believers.

Modern Christians can follow all sorts of different models and beliefs, modern muslims (especially Sunnis).... can't. There used to be much more diversity of thought within the muslim world but globalization has put a stop to much of it and muslim belief in most sunni majority countries is coalescing into a narrow Saudi interpretation that is incompatible with science or freedom of thought.

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

The choices you talk about aren't Islam specific.

No, of course not. Those are the general dilemmas and choices. Christians have mostly chosen the first and muslims have mostly chosen the second (beginning seriously in the 1970s - the pivotal decade as far as I can tell).

The fact that their are exceptions on both sides doesn't change the larger trends.

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

While Christianity has modernized Islam has not

Exactly, modernization for Christianity meant opening up public debate. Modernization in Islam at present, however, is about closing public debate in favor of koranic literalism.

The Muslim world was westerning up until the late 1970s when they collectively gave up and decided to retreat into a kind of weird idealized traditionalism (full of non-traditional things like hijab, very much a late 20th century invention).

Essentially, koranic literalism is the entire foundation of modern islam and it can't really withstand much intellectual scrutiny and people are left with choices,

accept that your religious tradition is just one of many or try to eliminate other traditions

accept that holy texts and science don't need to agree or try to ignore science

accept that holy texts are bound to the time and context of their creation or try to preserve the time and context of their creation

Essentially the muslim world collectively is going to the second option in all these cases

News / American GIs troops finally in Poland and, thank God, there's more to come [480]

Poland was obliterated in 5 weeks because Poland HAS CHOSEN ONE SIDE OF THE CONFLICT OVER THE OTHER

This is essentially the Putin party line - Poland got what it deserved for starting WWII by refusing completely reasonable German demands (expecting to be able to call on France and the UK for defense).

PEople who spout Putinesque propaganda can reasonable be expected to be pro-Putin.

"In the end Ukraine cannot win this

In other words, there is no such thing as Slavic unity. It's mostly an idle dream of intantile Balkan nationalists. Or it's simply Russian supremacism in disguise.

Ukraine operation was made in Washington

Even if that were true.... then so what? Only Russia has the right to influence Ukraine? If Ukrainians make a choice to turn more westward then that is the business of Ukrainians themselves and not a lot of Russian invaders.

Life / Why are Muslims seen as a deterrent to Poland? [564]

There are like 60 countries to choose from which already have islam as state religion.

Because they suck? What happens when muslims become a large majority is that islam drives out any other competing form of ethics or morality. So debates over morality (a sign of a healthy society) are replaced with conformity to a particularly backwards form of religion.

The suppression of competing forms of morality is followed by intellectual stagnation since science is not allowed to make any claims that conflict with the holy text.

Poland is mostly Roman Catholic but public debates on what is and what is moral are not restricted to church doctrine.

Colonialism is a distraction. Yes colonialism harmed many countries but places mostly became colonies because they were poorly organized in the first place.

An equivalent to the primary meaning of "pidzynowa" such as pathetic, poor, ******** or such would work

What people actually say in those contexts is "łamany"

That is broken Polish where an English phrase is employed in a Polish sentence.

I would say it's either a nonce borrowing or code switching (probably the first since the song in question is not well known to Polish speakers).
