Real Estate / What area to live in Wroclaw? I prefer to spend about 1600-1900 per month on renting. [19]

Krzyki
Sepolno
Biskupin
Grabyszinska

Krzyki and Biskupin are the nicest areas of Wrocław - very green - good communication with the rest of the city (especially Krzyki) - Grabiszyńska area is also nice the further south the nicer and also has very good communication with the centre -

oh - after reading that you will work in Strzegomska area Krzyki and Grabiszyn are your first targets to have a nice to live around

Life / Worlds most liveable cities (Krakow or Warsaw don't even hit the radar screens) [104]

Perhaps you would care to tell us where Władysław Szpilman was living at the end of 1944 if not Warsaw?

ever saw the movie 'The Pianist'? - what the film shows is no exaggeration - Szpilman was effectively hiding in the ruins - the capitulation of the Warsaw Uprising meant also the forceful removal of the population of the city (it was also done during the Uprising by the Germans) - all who remained in the city could have been killed on spot by the German occupying forces for not obeying strict orders to empty the city - I guess only the hiding Jews took the chances (and you must know that a lot of Jews were hiding out in th 'gentile' part of Warsaw during the occupation until the Warsaw Uprising (I have seen an estimate of 30 000 people) - some of these people survived the Uprising and it's massive destruction and loss of life and then managed to survive hiding out in the ruins of the city untill the liberation by Soviet forces

News / Polish Students Striking in Lithuania [80]

there is more to the new law then what Mr Czech cares to mention and which actually can lead to the dissolution of Polish minority schooling in Lithuania

read this and you will be a little bit more enlighted on the issue.

News / Why Is French On Poczta Parcel Waybills? [13]

teflcat - it could be Royal Mail - I've had quite a few things not even register as arriving in Poland after being sent through the Royal Mail - forums are full of people complaining about their international delivery too. Things seem to be going from bad to worse for them!

I have worked in a Polish post logistic center as a temp a couple of times - international parcels were strictly registered from what I can remember - nothing could go missing in this case in the center - perhaps it could go missing on the international leg of the transport (think at the airport) or down the path to the addressee in local post offices - there were cases of temps taking advantage of inland mail but they could hardly put their hands on international mail

Life / What are the requirements to get a cell phone here in Krakow? [22]

I don't think you can get a smartphone without a phone contract here (but I can be wrong) - still you can have a phone with GPS without having to buy a smartphone

- google translate it if you can't get the gist

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

But really - the only difference between Rzeczpospolita and Gazeta Wyborcza these days is that Rzeczpospolita tends to view things from a nationalist perspective while Gazeta Wyborcza views things more from a European/international perspective. Interestingly, unlike in the UK, there's no 'war' between those papers.

you must be missing out hugely on what is going on in Polish press delphi

delphiandomine

The problem is that it's manipulated by politicians on all sides. It's just nonsense - if Poland isn't able to have independent public media, then it should be closed down and the money used for better purposes. This country struggles to fund medicine for old people - why bother with a cash-sucking thing like TVP?

well Bronisław Wildstein has proven that we can have independent public media if you care to remember - it all depends on the will of those who are at the helm (I mean running the country)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

you know I would vote for PJN had not they destroyed mu trust in them before - I am getting fed up with PiS actually but there is little choice left for me - I hope the PJN join forces with PiS again after Kaczyński is ousted -

USA, Canada / Gift idea for something uniquely American that is difficult to find in Poland? [67]

hahhaha = the redwood tree idea is brilliant - there is surely lack of giant redwood trees in Poland - definitely bring one as a souvenir ;) - I'm sure the US Navy leases one of their nuclear aircraft carriers to you to bring it to Gdynia (or maybe you can hire one of those giant Russian jets)

I guess I know why pawian mentioned a bison - he must have got rid of a couple of his pot plants from his balcony recently and thinks how to fill the void ;)

USA, Canada / Gift idea for something uniquely American that is difficult to find in Poland? [67]

I just came back from holidays and on our last trip we visited the bison/buffalo farm.

put a wink here and there sometimes cause someone might actually take you seriously - bison easily available heh :) - I guess they are more readily available in Poland than in the USA (save for the different species - but I guess they interbreed readily)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Opposition loses first election campaign legal joust

of all cases that PO advertised as the succesful government projects (some 95 listed in their promo material) the court has found actuallyFOUR were the projects started and completed by PO government - of course according to basic logic the court had to state that PiS has given a false information claiming that these 95 projects were not to be thanked for solely to PO government and it has to make it good

USA, Canada / Gift idea for something uniquely American that is difficult to find in Poland? [67]

a souvenir is not suppose to be really practical - do you think their Polish friend would ever use a souvenir bat for some serious playing? I guess no - and I think an aluminum bat works better as an item to impress than a wooden one (maybe it is just me but aluminum bat seems to me much more fancy)

Poles are more than familiar with wooden bats - (ask hooligans - although baseball bats are not the latest craze among them actually) - aluminium bats look much more 'professional' - if I wanted a souvenir from America I would like a good aluminium baseball bat and a baseball glove (plus a couple of balls) more to impress than to use (I never had an aluminium bat in hands but I guess it feels much more powerfull)- maple syrup products are also a nice gift idea since the stuff is not widely available in Poland (call it exotic)

Love / I like a Polish guy - does he like me - what are Polish men like to women [18]

souixe13

don't put any pressure on the guy - if you really like him just let him know without expecting anything - if he's responsive good for you - if not move on

and actually if the guy is some serious drinker you could be in for even more trouble than with your English bf

Travel / Best way to get to Krakow Business Park? [27]

I guess you can perhaps look for a place in Azory area - it's a housing estate of block of flats from the times of communism- is it safe? hmm I don't know haven't been there in years - I guess it is a lot cheaper than the center of the city - it has a train station suitable for travel to Zabierzów (PKP Kraków £obzów)

History / Bad luck of Poland or something else? - constant occupatiuon by different vermin [11]

Dont you mean "re mobilize"? Had it been stood down after invading Czechoslovakia alongside the nazis a few months earlier?

do you read history or just create images in your head that suit you?? as far as I know Poland never mobilized in 1938 - if you have some seriuos sources that contradict it just post it

Travel / After 7 Weeks, why i loved Poland =) [22]

And interestingly, most of them are Jewish, not Catholic.

I am not informed on the subject but I very much doubt Jews who came to Brasil from Poland consider themselves Polish or Polonia - in such case why would you insist on calling them so - so again there is Polonia in Brasil and it is hmm big - and no I don't think Jews are part of this

Travel / Questions: Bus from Puławy to Budapest [4]

synaptic

Are you Hungarian?

I doubt there is a direct bus connection Puławy-Budapest

I couldn't find any reliable source on bus connections from Poland to Budapest

but I found a direct night train from Kraków to Budapest - I guess you can book and pay for the journey in Puławy railway station - the train

rozklad-pkp.pl/traininfo.php/pn/93414/261087/355434/146579/4095 /?q=pl/node/146&ld=pkp&seqnr=4&dent=6b.01420529.1314180910&(start s just before 10 pm in Kraków and arrives after 8 a.m in Budapest - seems like it is a daily train) - you would have to take someone who speaks Polish with you to make a reservation and buy the ticket for the train - you need to make a reservation for the train and I guess the sooner you make it the better

you can reach Kraków from Puławy either by train or by bus - learn what suits you better - in case of train journey from Puławy it perhaps would be possible to buy a ticket for the whole journey up to Budapest - should save you money a bit

gumishu

busses to Budapest seem to go only once in a week - here you can find some connections (I suggest Kraków for a departure point) you can also presumably book online here (prices are from 80 to 200 PLN) biletyautobusowe.net.pl

this is the cheapest option presumably
