News / Tesco out of Poland? Żabka and Biedronka opportunity. [73]

Of course you mean that.

I would frankly love you to explain how a small local shop can be better for the consumer than a large European chain. To make matters een worse, supermarkets have people employed on proper contracts, while Żabka and the like are notorious for using umowa zlecenie or worse.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

@Johnny: just get out of your closet! I suppose you hate gays because they had the courage to get out of their closets whereas you don't:).

It's probably like that old school playground game, where you say to girls "I HATE YOU!" while actually meaning "I want to kiss you".

Certainly one has to wonder why Johnny is talking "in private" about homosexuality with other men. It's pretty obvious that he's in deep denial about something, isn't it?

News / Tesco out of Poland? Żabka and Biedronka opportunity. [73]

You mean higher prices for Polish consumers already battered with higher mortgage margins, higher bank fees and more?

Funny how you really desire a return to the pre-1989 days, isn't it?

How many of the 38 million Poles do you know personally to come to that conclusion, and how far right do these people stand politically?

He's basing his opinion on a handful of Polonia that post on here, nothing more.

And I have ask them in private.

I must admit, it's rather amusing to watch you admit to discussing homosexuality with people on the internet. Time to get out of that closet, methinks.

Love / Polish Wedding present - how much money for the couple? [40]

It's just about OK if you have a wide range of things, but yeah, I still think it's tacky as hell.

Apparently some cousin of mine expected people to buy her all sorts of expensive crap and then got angry when everyone started to mysteriously drop out. Lollerskates.

Although I am very shocked by this Polish "tradition", which I found most vulgar

It's incredibly vulgar. It's also thoughtless - it's easy to slip cash into an envelope, but there's nothing personal or thoughtful about it.

Mind you, the most vulgar thing is when people openly ask for cash. That's just tasteless as hell.

Life / Is it safe for Indians, Sikhs living here in Poland? Any Temple / Gurudwara in Wroclaw? [159]

I wouldn't be surprised If damn traitors were ready to bring war here just to blame it on the current authorities.

Notice how you're already justifying the use of force against the opposition. You can't fool us Greggy - we know that you'd love nothing more than to watch the government stamp on the face of Poles.

Except that they... didn't (although a large part of that would have been true) because only traitors do such things.

They...did. We all remember how PiS went to Brussels and Washington to demand that they intervene in Poland.

Pathetic crap, as usual.

Honestly, there's not much difference between your rhetoric and the average Communist rhetoric. It's all about branding people as enemies, hinting about war and proclaiming yourself to be the only real patriots.

Yep, usual tactic of pro-Russia types - they insult and abuse at every opportunity.

News / Russia says: WE'LL NUKE POLAND [150]

Latest news of how PiS intend to protect Poland - they intend to cancel the order for the Patriot missiles.

With every passing day, the links between PiS and Russia grow stronger and stronger.

You don't see a state owned institution like Radio Poland publicly criticizing Poland very often.

Bear in mind that it's directly under the control of PiS, so for Polskie Radio to report it is newsworthy in itself.

But remember that Greggy is just one in a long line of Communists who insult, abuse and attempt to discredit anyone that doesn't agree with them. It was the tactic used after WW2, after the Poznań protests of '56, after the Prague Spring, etc etc etc. They pretend not to be, but even his speech is pretty much straight out of the Communist textbook of how to insult political opponents.

Great bunch of neighbors in the EU/NATO to have aye ?

Not really. Germany has been massively reluctant since WW2 to commit troops to anything other than a defensive mission - they've been taking part in peacekeeping, but they really, really don't want to get involved with stationing troops further to the east.

Love / Polish Wedding present - how much money for the couple? [40]

the problem though is that Polish weddings are far more expensive relatively than western weddings y'know?

It's madness. I was reading something a while ago about how entire families put themselves into financial ruin to pay for a wedding, including remortgaging property and all the rest of it, because there's some sort of "pressure" to do so. I'm always watching those village weddings on youtube, and you can really see that some of those families don't have much money - how the hell they pay for lavish weddings is beyond me.

If I was getting married and I didn't have the cash, I'd hire the local village hall, make the food at home and ask everyone to bring a couple of bottles of vodka. Job done.

USA, Canada / Has anyone with a US or CDN passport recently been subjected to the "Passport Trap" in Poland? [29]

I wonder if similar regulations exist in other countries, especially in the EU.

It's pretty much standard - the relevant convention (I forget which one it is...) makes it clear that you cannot use consular protection if you're a national of the state in question. Poland goes a little bit further by requiring you to identify yourself using Polish identity documents, but that's it.

Travel / Poland trip in September - Zamosc, maybe Krakow, Gdansk, Warsaw, Wroclaw... need recommendations [15]

Drop the idea of driving from Kraków to Gdańsk - it's a long, long way and the driving habits of Polish drivers will leave you exhausted at the end of the journey. I would rather take the time to spend 2 days in the Bieszczady region - it's close to Zamość, and it's an easy drive to Kraków after that.

Here's a link to what I would suggest you do - goo.gl/mzzwXh

Start from Zamosc at about 09:00. Drive to Przemyśł, which has a unique sloping market square and several interesting attractions. You should reach there by 11:00. Eat lunch there, and spend time exploring - 4 hours should be enough for the town. Leave by 15:00. Drive to Ustrzyki Dolne, explore for a little while (an hour should be enough!), then drive to this place - arlamow.pl/en - to stay the night. If you know Polish history, it's the place where President Lech Wałęsa was interred during martial law.

Next day, head to Ustrzyki Górne. Spend several hours there - I'd recommend walking up to the tripoint of Poland-Ukraine-Slovakia, but I can advise other walks if you want. When you're finished (say around 16:00), drive to Cisna - which is a beautiful village in the mountains in a beautiful location - it's one of my favourite Polish villages. Stay the night there.

After that, get up early and leave for about 09:00 for Kraków. Visit a town called Sanok on the way - you'll find it incredibly charming.

If you can, I would recommend changing to 1 night in Zamosc and spending an extra night in the Bieszczady region - there are other places there that are also worth seeing.

You'll appreciate this far more than Gdańsk - I can promise you that it will be worth it :)

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

PiS isn't going to seize anyone's lands dude.. not gonna happen. If they did, I would take the 300k zloty because it'd be less of a headache at this point.

You haven't read the laws, have you? The new agricultural law means that they can nationalise land, hence why some farmers are getting very very upset.

Exactly, because it's a non-issue for the majority of Poles as well as the government.

No, because the parties simply didn't want to fight an election on the issue. It's nothing to do with what Poles want, but everything to do with the priorities of the political parties - who don't really reflect ordinary Poles, hence the low turnout.

Yet KODists

I fail to see how KOD have anything to do with it.

Exactly - because it is the existing law and most Poles do not care for changing it to accommodate a tiny group.

No, because it simply wasn't an issue that the parties focused on.

As long as it conforms to their conservative, Roman Catholic, Polish patriotic views... which is totally fine with me.

Really? You'll think it's totally fine when they seize your land that you were so upset over, because some local politician sees that you aren't present and decides that it'll make a fine place for his friend's new house? Be careful for what you wish for. As you said yourself, it's agricultural land. The ANR can seize it and pay you compensation that they themselves deem appropriate, including the house. I imagine you wouldn't be too happy to get 300,000zł for it, would you?

Those "views" of PiS are populism. The real views of PiS are about power and money - which is exactly why the ANR now have the ability to seize your land and sell it to the Church for a minimal amount.

Poland finally is realizing that it can't rely on NATO as it is highly unlikely they'd do anything to stop a Russian advance.

NATO is about as good as it gets. Russia would trash Poland within days in any conventional war, so the only logical way to defend Poland is to tie German investments up in Poland.

Not really and definitely not with PiS.

Oh my. I can see that you've got a lot of learning to do. PiS are one of the most politically correct parties out there - if someone associated with them dares to breath a word of something that isn't part of their narrative, then they're cast aside very very quickly.

The defense minister has no problem expressing his views on Jews

No problem? No, none at all, except the fact that NATO has gone very cold on Poland.

and the government has no problem regularly making xenophobic and homophobic remarks - as well as the common citizenry.

I can assure you that many citizens do not make xenophobic and homophobic remarks. Perhaps you're keeping the wrong company.

Then they should go to a country where they'll have their 'basic rights'

We want basic rights for everyone living in Poland. Poland has a huge tradition of looking after the rights of citizens.

The fact remains - the government and people have voted and decided - they don't want gay marriage in Poland. We don't want it, too bad.

Not really. It was a non-issue during the election campaign.

you can move to place more suitable for the things you want instead of trying to undermine and change what the people and government want for their own country.

Sorry, but that's obvious nonsense. If you want something to change, then you work towards changing it.

Giving equal rights to homosexuals will not even take any rights away from me!

Exactly. I really don't understand what the fuss is about. Who cares what adults do in their private lives? It doesn't affect me, but I do wonder how anyone can claim to be straight if they spend their lives googling pictures of naked men.

Straight people discuss this because they don't want it in their society.

I think it's a sign of homosexuality myself, but hey. I don't feel the need to discuss homosexuality on a daily (or even weekly) basis - it's a simple non-factor.

Thankfully, there's some places in Europe left where PC, LGBT, and liberalism have not overrun the society

You really don't understand Poland, do you? Political correctness exists to a massive degree here.

Why do they insist on making every country accept their ideals, especially if they don't want to?

It's a basic human right.

We don't feel respected when we are called homophobes.

To be quite honest, we don't respect you, that's why you're called homophobes.

We prefer to be called "straight".

Sorry, but plenty of straight people are able to live their lives without discussing homosexuality on the internet constantly. Homophobic is what you shall be.

USA, Canada / Has anyone with a US or CDN passport recently been subjected to the "Passport Trap" in Poland? [29]

I'm unaware of it starting to happen much again, but with the current bunch of brain-dead cretins forming a government, nothing would surprise me.

I can't find it, but it was one of the Straż Graniczna websites recently - they sent out the information reaffirming that Polish citizens need to identify themselves using a Polish identity document. That's where the news in the Polonia media has come from. In other words, proud PiS patriots are determined to stop people using LOT.

Amazing how much bad advice is on some of those Polonia websites though - I found one a while ago that said that dual citizens should use their American passports to benefit from "travel protection". Those of us that know Poland know how laughable that idea is!

Life / POLISH FLAG DAYS...when are they...? [30]

Pretty much the only thing Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznan fans agreed on was what they think of him.

Quite a remarkable achievement by all accounts, given the sheer hatred they have for each other :D

Life / POLISH FLAG DAYS...when are they...? [30]

Who said anything about the Poles?

I said that it's a common situation for Polish politicians to suck up to the Polonia for votes. Nothing new, and doesn't change the fact that most Poles regard the Polonia as being laughable at best and with downright hostility for their interference in Polish affairs at worst.

I'm not a fan of them, I'm simply amused that they've now turned on PiS.

Now we get to see how PiS deal with hooligans. Amusing, amusing.

Life / POLISH FLAG DAYS...when are they...? [30]

President Duda marked Flag Day this year with very important and inclusive remarks:

He also celebrated it by being booed out of the Stadion Narodowy :D

Nothing new there. Every Polish politician tries to woo the Polonia lobby. PO did it to devastating effect in 2007, for instance.

Law / Polish Income Tax Payable on Inheritance for UK Citizen [26]

The relative stated that they'd discovered I owed income tax in Poland on the value of the property (19% which would be about £1,000).

Something isn't quite right here. You aren't tax resident in Poland (and there's no way you could be deemed to be - you don't stay here for more than 185 days/you don't have your "centre of vital interests" here) - so perhaps the best way forward is to pay 50zł and ask the tax office for a binding ruling as to your residency?

Once you're declared to be non-resident for tax purposes, you can tell the tax office to get lost :)
