News / EU tribunal overrules Polish name contest in Lithuania [150]

I think Lithuanians made such restrictions for Polish population only recently because it isn't isolated from the mother country anymore. They can easily travel to and fro Poland, read Polish press, listen to Polish radio etc. - basically all hope was lost for Lithuanians that Poles would assimilate eventually.

History / Are Polish territories natively German? [73]

At least for that Poland can't blame Germany: compensation was paid for Poland and paid in the way that the Polish government wanted it to be paid.

Compensation was in 1990s paid to compulsory Polish workers who were abducted and forced to work in Germany. That money was pitiful though and nowhere near compensated the traumatic experiences of those people.

Other than that there was no compensation to speak of.

...I don't think I can follow that logic !

Quickly - ancestors of Poles lived here in a 1000 years ago, 2000 years ago, 3000 years ago, since despite the migrations, some of the natives decided to stay and live together with newcomers. :) OTOH those who left met different fates and wound up in different territories (like Goths in Spain).

UPPER SILESIAN

A dying breed :)

History / Are Polish territories natively German? [73]

Matter is geography..

I actually thought about it some more. There were some Germanic tribes in today's Poland. Most of them went away to settle in the Roman empire, though some of them stayed and were quickly overwhelmed by Slavs and assimilated into Slavic tribes, since there were no more Germanic tribes in Xth century on our territories. Which means, that those Germanics that decided to stay were ancestors of Poles, so no matter what way you look at it, these territories are natively Polish.

Even the French are half Germans (Franks)...so are northern Italians (Lombards), some Brits (Angles, Saxons, Jutes) and alot of other mishpokes.

By that logic Czechs, Russians, Serbs etc. are half Poles!

So some germanic tribes are the ancestors of the Germans??? REALLY! I would never had thought....

The big differnce is that you make all ancient Germanic tribes ancestors of modern Germans, which is simply not true. You should know better than me which tribes actually were the ancestors as I expect German education system to teach as much...

I could list you the ancestors of modern Poles (Polanie, Wiślanie, Mazowszanie and Ślężanie) and then list of dozens of ancient Slavic tribes that weren't our ancestors.

History / Are Polish territories natively German? [73]

Sure...as always...everything Germanics did was bloody conquering and everything Slavs did was wandering peacefully into empty lands...suuuuuure!

Germanic invasions of Roman empire are well documented. German invasion on Slavic tribes in X century is well documented. Where's documentation of wars between native Germanic tribes and bloody Slavics in IV century?

Well, if the Germanics aren't the ancestors of the Germans then what is? Please clue me in...

Some Germanic tribes were. Most of them weren't. Most of ancient Slavic tribes are not ancestors of Poles.

No it's not...it was germanic before (Rugians) and again after the Slavs left.

No, Slavs didn't leave those territories, they were conquered in rather bloody wars and then marginalised. German expansion was luckily stopped in its track at one point when they encountered more established state structures (Polish state).

Regardless, BB, what is amusing is that you won't acknowledge that:
a)Germanic influence vanquished after Slavs settled in those territories. They were scarcely populated to begin with, after Germanic tribes went off to plunder Roman civilization there was even fewer people there and Slavs did find mostly deserted lands

b)Germanic is not not equal to German. Similarly, Slavic is not equal to Polish! You falsely assume that tribes that inhabited today's Poland in 2nd century are ancestors of Germans. They weren't, at least most of them weren't.

Bratwurst Boy in a thread about Polish minorities in Germany stubbornly claims that Poland is in fact natively German. Sice other people are sick of this discussion in that thread, I suggest we move it here. :)

Really...where do you think Germans stem from...the marsians?

Do you consider Scotts as native inhabitants of Germany? After all, they (or other Celtic tribes, which is equivalent to you) were there BEFORE Germanics.

As in Germans were natives to that land, much later immigrating Poles into Germany are not!

Germans =/= Germanics
And they were nonexistent on today's Polish territory in Xth century.

Unless you consider Scotts as native inhabitants of Germany or something along those lines.

Language / Improving Polish reading comprehension and vocabulary. A downloadable collection of passages? [14]

I have already read them and I am searching for something in a passage format, something that is going to improve READING by which one can also improve vocabulary.

I'm sorry, but your thinking is totally backwards. You should start reading random texts (articles, short stories and novels) written in ordinary language as soon as possible, so that you get acquainted with actually used vocabulary and phrases.

There's some great computer software to review your previously studied material, Supermemo is pretty nice.

Why do you continue to ignore what happened after the IInd century?

Europe in IXth century (when settlements from II century were LONG forgotten, google much younger Biskupin for an example).

What...do you want to tell me what I should say and what not????

The question is looped in a way that is impossible to answer. Though I assume that the first 'what' doesn't exist, then yes, I'm telling you what you shouldn't do in this case. That's why this question exist, so that people can inform each other what behaviour is advised/most fit in certain situations. And I'm telling you not to bring up Polish/German/Silesian matter on Upper Silesia, because you were proven wrong in the past and now you're falsely accusing people of denying past German existence in Silesia.

What...do you want to tell me what I can say and what not?

I told you what you should not do, not what you cannot do.
should =/= can
I think the equivalent of should is in German sollen, of can - koennen.

Not "you" damnit....Poles...as in generalizing and stereotyping...:)

Regardless, you shouldn't bring up that subject again. You claimed that it was Polish imperialism that conquered Upper Silesia after WWI, when in fact it was native people living in Upper Silesia that were fighting German state without support (official or otherwise) of Polish government. You were proven wrong, time to move on.

How logical is it to assume there was nobody left as even at today big migrations there are always many people left and staying behind!

Today's big migrations are nowhere near comparable to migrations of those times (well, in relative terms, there are much more people nowadays).

When Poles emigrate in masses to the US, UK, Germany or elswhere...does that mean there are no Poles left in Poland???

You only wish these lands to be Deutsch rein to be not having to see yourself as the invader, the conqueror...nooooo Poles don't do something like that, they are preferable the victim! These lands had to be empty!

These lands were conquered by Slavic nations (not Poles, Polish nationality did not exist at the time), but around year 1000 western and southern border or Poland was more or less the same as it was today. It had never been German before that date. So yes, we have the rights to call those lands re-gained after 1945, even if they belonged to various German and non-German states in the meantime.

Back to IIIrd and IVth century. Germanic tribes mostly deserted those lands in pursue of richer Roman occupied territories, so it's kind of their fault for not maintaining feasible population in their lands.

You do the same with german Silesia...denying the german heritage and contribution in these lands...again the same old propaganda!

I never did such thing.

Of course...no Germans left at all!

And as the proud slavic/polish tribe looked around in the new land there were no towns, no villages, no people left in that squeaky new land...where people have lived for 3000 years already (not to mention the Celts).

Gawd, how stupid can one be! You really still believe all that propaganda, don't you!

Again, stop being full of crap. The appearance of Huns caused a mass migration that pushed European nations southward and westward. Germanics deserted those territories. You really are full of crap or German history education is much worse than I expected. You never heard about Vandals' epic journeys? or Goths'? etc.

They have the same rights as everyone else.

Not really. They don't have access to eduction in their language even though they pay the same taxes that allow other people that.

There was a continious strong german presence for 2000 years, till about 1950 as the last German got forcefully expelled.
(Okay, there was yet another wave of refugees

There was not a continuous Germanic presence for 2000 years, stop being full of crap. Pretty much everything east of Elbe was Slavic in V-IXth century, it's later on that Germanics started to reappear on those territories.

PS: There is a reason most Jews hate Poland more than the Germans...

Whatever that reason was (I'd be interested to learn it, so you can write more than suspension points), it doesn't change the fact that we did not commit mass systemic genocide on them. Germans did.

More nerve than demanding minority rights for immigrant Poles in Germany??? Hardly!
If you don't like it leave...we won't expell you. You have always the choice!

Are you sure that if two million people (who have a job, pay taxes etc) disappearing out of the blue would have a good impact on German economy? Can't they have some rights for their contribution?
