Life / Homosexuality in Polish Culture [231]

The decent ones hate the militant ones as much as everyone else does.

Just like most women hate the extremist feminism. But we should not forget how much the feminism movement did for women rights.

Poland: Zaolzie and Wilno invaders, collaborators and traitors, SS and Wehrmacht volunteers,
Victory Parade invitation dodgers, oppressors of Ukrainians and Belarussians, enemies of Progress
and Reason

Don't forget the "major concentration camps" and "originators of the final solution"

Life / Homosexuality in Polish Culture [231]

You only see this kind in some stupid sitcoms. The real gay people I know are friendly, helpful and discrete about their sex-lives.

History / Controversial Chapters: Polish-German history texbook [8]

I once met a German teenager interested in WWII who mistook Warsaw Uprising with the defence of Polish post office in Gdańsk.

Gerhard Schröder came to Poland in the 90ties and he confused Warsaw uprising and the uprising in Warsaw ghetto in some official apologizing speech.

History / Writing a book: Occupations in the 1st half of the 20th century. [6]

Yes, a wife, in accordance with the traditions from 1900

I would agree with you that in the beginning of the 20th century whoever could afford having a woman at home, would let her stay at home. In the poor families however, whoever could work, worked. Women were doing mainly unqualified jobs in the factories or worked as cleaners, cooks, etc. This changed after WWI started. Men were in war, or killed, or crippled. Women had to assume many male professions. That's when it becomes more probable that a women could have been a welder or a watchmaker. (This development empowered women all over Europe and in they became voting rights. Polish women can vote since 1918.)

Food / Pancakes with cottage cheese? [40]

I am wondering, is pancakes with cottage cheese a Polish thing or is this popular all across Europe?

I'm wondering if you talk about crepes with sweet cottage cheese filling (which people like to eat for lunch or dinner), or American style pancakes that are prepared with cottage cheese to reduce the carb content. If you talk about the latter, I think they are only eaten by people on high protein diets (both in America and in Poland). They are quite nasty, if you ask me.

Food / Expats' Polish food favourites [140]

Did anyone have a dish called "prażocha" or "lemieszka"? It is similar to polenta but made with (I think) wheat flour rather than corn meal.

What about a dish called "parzybroda". It's potatoes cooked with bacon and cabbage.

My grandmother used to cook both. I didn't have them since childhood. I'm wondering if anyone still cooks these dishes.

Food / Expats' Polish food favourites [140]

I wonder if Poles try iskembe ćorbasI when holidaying in Turkey. This is their version of tripe soup. It isn't as peppery as flaki but they sometimes add vinegar at the table to give it a bit of a bite. It is considered to be a hangover cure, or rather a hangover prophylactic as it is eaten after a night's drinking.

In Mexico they have a tripe soup very similar to flaki. The difference was that the broth was tangy. They serve it for breakfast (hangover curing link here?).

I would substract sugar and vinegar from this equation and added some dill ;-)

I like it with just chives or onion, sour cream and salt.

History / WW2 - The other side. What USSR, also that the Polish government has made not to admit WW2 [45]

1936 Introduction by Germany of armies in the Rhine area. Poland has supported this step. In the answer France has declared that has no more obligations to Warsaw. Great Britain has taken of a neutral position.

This actually was a step to admit the WWII, at least indirectly. The Wehrmacht was not prepared for war in 1936 and if the allies really followed the decisions of the Versaille Treaty and responded with weapons, the history could have taken different turns. Hitler wrote somewhere that the 2 days after they entered the Rhine area were the most stressful in his life, since his army could have been crushed within days.

Kazdy moze miec zly dzien Antek, nawet moderator. Wczoraj wszystko wydawalo mi sie wyjatkowo dziwne. Harry z Havokiem pluli zolcia na tematy osobiste na topicu o Bialorusi, ale moderatorzy woleli usuwac posty na temacie gramatycznym.

Food / Expats' Polish food favourites [140]

I've cooked Polish food many times for my non-Polish friends. I seems that salatka, stuffed cabbage and zrazy are the winners.

What surprises me, people don't care for chlodnik. It's beyond my comprehension.
