Genealogy / One parent Polish, the other one German - their children? [16]

Confusion, some loss of structure language gives caused by concepts from different languages that are not always compatible or overlapping, sometimes even denoting different phenomena, I guess could cause lack of clear lines that one language gives. Inner world filled with struggle over primacy of one of the worlds.

Second problem more psychological one, identity issues. Mom, dad, what am I? (question that has more relevance in Europe, not that much applicable to countries that offer third citizenship based identity like Americans, Australians ....)

Numerous studies in fact have been made measuring the cognitive learning patterns of bilingual language learners,

Lyzko, could you tell me more about the findings? :)

I think it could, and I heard something about it, that bilingual situation could be a precipitating factor for some problems that occur in childhood.

Sounds reasonable to me, instead of being flooded by one world and its words, the child develops often conflicting ideas, concepts of different worlds materialized through two different languages.

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

Dinaric Alps is written on Wiki, but we both know hercegovac that means Serbs :))
They constitute the large majority of the Dinaric population, and more Serbs have dinaric origins in general population of SRB than it is the case in CRO.

So, in average, the tallest are people from Dinaric Alps, meaning: 1. Montenegrins, 2. Their relatives Serbs. Croats won the bronze ;)

Love / 6 months with my Polish girlfriend and I still don't understand her.. [208]

I thought about this Slavic tendency you said is well known among Greeks (Slavs as always blue, moody people) and I found out that Serbs (and Croats too) don't display it as much as Russians I had the chance to observe. If it exists it is happening more to those who are mixed more with Mediterranean people here. And then it has a different image than expected (acting outs, kind of). Any idea why?

And I compared for my Master work Rorschach protocols of American and Serbian patients with depressive disorder and discovered something comparative psychiatry discovered 100 years ago before my fantastic scientific endeavor, that is that depression has different expression in different cultures. While Americans tend to be more open about it, seek help, or escape to phantasy life, our people develop either hypochondriasis or hostile type of depression, passive aggressive. Interesting.

UK, Ireland / Why do so many Polish guys in the UK have a crew cut or buzz cut? [106]

Southern:Chetnics are an exception because due to local Balcan tradition they regarded themselves as revolutionaries and carried beards despite heavy conservatism.

Correct.

I dislike their image completely. Too similar to Orthodox Church fashion, too priesty :)

Having communist past with many movies on the topic seen, I was terrified with their appearance. Draža Mihailović and his chetniks had a Hollywood movie made at the beginning of war when West still didn't choose communists as their allies and betrayed the Chetniks.

The fighting guerillas aka Chetniks, by Hollywood ;)

imdb.com/title/tt0035729

'movie chetniks the fighting guerrillas made in 1943, story deals with Serbian freedom fighters who stood up to Hitler and cost him World War Two'

Now, the hair and hair on men:

I like beards on men, but those very short ones, those that can scratch. So baldness, natural of course with some beard, symbolizes manhood for me. Testosterone kings.

Samson and the might in the hair didn't convince me.

My name is not Delilah :))

Edit: Buzz cut looks manly. I forgot that. It mimics the manhood mentioned in the post above only baldness can emit. And Polish men are manly men ;)

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

no sex stories online for you.I suggest you read Natasa's post:)

Defense:
My posts are asexual. I am just compensating the modesty of my lexical fund using word sex as a joker card when the term is untranslatable for me, and google translate proves helpless.

Like in:

I like (some local fruit), I like sexy fruits.

I will have to use it in its most restrictive meaning, not as term interchangeable with libido, as a synonym for the life energy. Spiritus movens.

I really don't want to be misunderstood.

Nice thread Aphro :)

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

I was taught exactly the opposite. Always to pay my share. Or even worse, to pay for everything. Never to except expensive presents.
I know many women who behave stupid like me here.

There is the other kind too.
They bite and they have tags (one word and one number). Respect.

Law / Divorce legal adviser in Poland? [7]

cheap divorce lawyer

Divorces tend to elicit this word for creative application like here....a 'cheap lawyer', perhaps a best candidate for new definition of oxymoron.

Travel / Which way from Poland to Croatia.... [30]

Got Ozujsko there?

Probably yes, but I didn't hear for it. Laško beer from Slovenia I saw. I don't know if it is motivated by taste or politics. The beer offer, I mean.

Now, I looked again for the weather and got SMS from local mobile provider that weather is going to be just fine.

This year they are worse in prognosis than usual. They change their opinion and wishes within minutes :)

Sorry for misinforming you. Sun is shining bright for us tomorrow.

History / Why did communism in Poland fail? [180]

Most people who lived during communism talk positively about it

I lived in a slightly different type of socialism, until age of 19, and without falling prey to the 'good old times' trap, I can conclude that it was a better world. The happiest generation here is, according to many, the one born after the WWII. They lived in idilic world, with its problems of course, but organized and humane. Solidarity and altruism were valuable concepts.

This one I don't like. It is like a tight itching suit tailored to fit the measures of somebody else, it has a shape of Protestant body. Based on their heritage, it has nothing or little to do with us. Insane levels of achievement aspirations, imposed modesty, abstinence of corporal pleasures, hard work, the goal justifies the means, what the hell?!!

I want time machine. Now.

Life / What is with Polish and their indoor plants? [26]

Slavs are friends of nature.

There are excellent tobacco sorts here in Herzegovina.
'Natural processes of fruit or any kind of fermentation shouldn't be interrupted (only closely monitored).'- Slavic credo

I also like nature, I have a hedgehog in the yard, two dogs, three trespassing cats that like living on the edge, sometimes turtles that like group sex, and a mom :)

Yes, we like nature.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

BUT: some of these countries excel in other parts: bread, sausages, cakes and sweets, beer or cookies for instance. All mediterranean countries suck at it.

Odd, having in mind the warm climate ;)

Who needs sausages on 40C, and cakes?

Pastry is excellent, btw, light.

I don't know anything about beers, so no comment about that.

Mediterran is associated with wine?

Kalamata olives

It is embarrassing what ignorant i am when it comes to food.

I will ask for them. Perhaps I ate them, I know I just love olives.

Here people mostly substituted sunflower oil with olive oil long time ago.

They complained at the beginning, but who started with olive oil, didn't change his mind.

German food for being frightfully overcooked and especially over-boiled.

In Germany this practice caused rapid loss of weight on this side. I was digesting two wurstchen for two days, like poisoned.

Not made for delicate southern pancreas.

Germans can digest metal, I'm sure.

our food applies to the more primitive istincts.

Selbstverstaendlich.
I know why now.
Orthodoxy Church is guilty.

I'm very jealous of this trait of yours.

Recipe is simple. I just need to borrow you my mom for a while :)

Apetite is gone.

cannot compete with mediteranean one.

De gustibus ...doesn't apply here ;)

Basic ingredients used for cooking in Mediterranean area are thanks to nature simply more delicious (fruit, vegetable). More sun.
So, meal has to be too.

Tomato, for instance, is noticeably juicier and more tasteful from North to South in range of few hundred km's.

Southern, I don't like to eat at all, but in Greece I almost enjoyed it. ( Greek cuisine better impression left on me than anything I tried to eat in Italy (known), France (confusing) or Spain (not fitting to the flavors I'm used to )

What I tasted in Greece was almost making me forget about other things and think about food ;)

That good.

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

Actually in Belarus I lived the process of slavicization and it was quite frightening.

I need that kind of Slavicization. As soon as possible. Batteries are leer.

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

Reliability of sources correlates positively and significantly with Slavism, and with closeness to me (not only geographically):

1. Southern (In we trust)
2. Des Esseintes
3. Alexw68

It has to be like that, Greek with love for Slavs, American Slav and then comes somebody who is just Slavicized. (no offense Alex)
Cruel world ;)

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

Interesting insight.
Now, I tried to find ethnic stereotypes (or social distance research) about European nations, I remember I read about it...
In last ten years there is a hyper production of auto and heterostereotypes research within Balkan circle, like it is an isolated island. Complete Balkan. Nothing found about prevailing local stereotypes about Germans, English....west

I doubt that it is accidental, having notions of the ways those research are financed and initiated ( department of Psychology inclines heavily to one side, those research often are conducted with the goal of mutual regional reconciliation, EU direction ).

Now, it came to my mind, that this semi isolating policy has its roots in Bismarck's era, and some people keep doing that. There is one interesting idea, it came from a Westerner (forgot who it was), and is repeatedly reinvented by many others, that is that Europe partly projects its interior and sees it as Balkan exterior. (aggression, chaos, fears)

Sort of splitting. Black and white.

Sociologists are responsible for the idea, and I think that to some extent it makes sense.

Not to be misinterpreted by Poles, word Europe is used to designate the western Europe here, I am just accepting the established practice...term is confiscated long ago....;)

Life / Polish stereotypes of other nationalities!? [472]

Serbian expressions:

He is complaining like a Greek in the prison- for somebody not willing to accept inevitable.
Don't pretend to be English- when somebody is trying to present that he has nothing to do with problem he created. Cunning ;)
He smokes like a Turk - uncivilized in smoking, but it tends to spread to complete persona
he likes Bulgarian policy - two faced, deceiving

I can't recall more now, I have to look online.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

You should know by now that we are a noble nation

I will confirm that. Crow would have to say much more about it. (just a wild guess) Where is he?
