Love / Do young Polish ladies 17-23 speak any English? [59]

And also I don't care if anyone in the airport knows my age, once I'm in the city people will assume I'm 20/21 seeing as that's how old I look....

Yeah, and when the bar throws u back for being under 21....?

History / Interesting memorial about 212 Polish soldiers [18]

Thanks for the info mate. Great story that I was totally unaware of. Cheers.

I was reading up on this, at the time of posting i was writing this down on pf. It really seems to me something that has gone missing in the British - Polish relationship. These Poles were substantial to setting up the Polish democratic society in London that Marx also became a member off. These are the guys that set about dragging Polish pilots back to the UK during ww2.

Small unknown facts bring about great things.

Edit@ also it turns out the memorial was made many a year ago, but ran out of funding, so local Poles and Brits in Portsmouth gave the funding. Nice to actually have a happy story on here ;)

They will at the airport when they ask why you are not with an adult...

Len Goodman, TVs most surprising Goy !!

He was good in it, seemed really enthusiastic about finding out his GG-granfather came from Poland.

ps, Apparently they are considered Polands first official community in the UK :)

But who was this Karl Marx???

Edit, I got him. ;) dumb me for a second :D

I also love the woman.

How the hell can you know that, you are 17...

Do you think I will appeal to the ladies?

probably not since you should still be at school...

Another potential "English teacher" writes.

Hardly, the guy is under-aged to be called an adult in Poland.

And I still think I'd be a hit with the ladies my age because I'm quite attractive, and I'm mixed race.

And you have to go all the way to Poland for a lass, why not check out the Poles in your local area?

Someone is on my bullshitting radar... and i pick them up quite well...

Yes Polish history is very interesting and dramatic.

I really believe so, I think that's why Norman Davies loves the country sooooo much.

History / Interesting memorial about 212 Polish soldiers [18]

It is a really interesting part of history. I came across it after watching the bbc program "who do you think you are?" which takes celebrities and finds out their family histories. Len Goodman is who they were following and his great-great grandfather was a Polish "trooper" in the Krakow Cavalry during the November rising in Poland. Turns out his G-G-grandfather won a major battle just outside Warsaw but in the end they were defeated soon after. They fled to Prussia after the Prussian king offered them exile. Only a thousand made it there and to make things worse the Prussians then decided they wanted rid of them. 212 were put on a boat to N.America but due to storms the ship had to dock in Portsmouth. The Polish soldiers were welcomed in Portsmouth and the local community settled them there instead of sending them to America. Thats the story I'm no historian of Polish history.

This is the link to the program, most of the second part is dedicated to this uprising in Poland.

Memorial in Portsmouth dedicated to the Polish soldiers who were exiled in 1831. Seems like the local government weren't too happy about the soldiers being rescued and settled in Portsmouth, so the local population took it upon themselves to help.

Food / Grilled Oszczypek/bacon/cranberry sauce - where to find in Krakow? [6]

Does anyone have any ideas where I can find this in Krakow? Any decent restaurants offering it on their menus? I imagine there are plenty, but I don't know where to start looking - thanks!

Any shop, most Polish restaurants and even on the market square when they have the stalls up ;)

News / Poles are able to forgive their enemies - how noble. [68]

I would say vast majority of Poles don't really give a damn about it.

I always found it strange how Poles take to their leaders. I get the picture that as a General this guy was honoured ect among Poles. Where as put a PM who most Poles hated and made fun of regularly in charge and when he goes head first into a fir tree there is a national uproar against the Russians, even though he brought it on himself. Then bury him in the Wawel...

(by the way, Poles - why is it General Jaruzelski and not President Jaruzelski? Is it just because he's better known as the General and his Presidency was brief?

From what I know, and not to be taken seriously is that Poles tried to discredit him as much as possible. They loved the General but couldnt stand the president.

Floriańska

You obviously just went to the touristy places, try futher afield next time ;)

What's the age range for members/guests at Cien ?

No members, just guests. Last time I went was on my friends leaving party. Drinks range like, think it was a bit over the top, something around 12z a beer.

Work / The demand for English language learning in Poland is at an all time low [41]

Look how much former State teachers are now running small language schools

Those same teachers who spend hours before lessons looking up words in a dictionary.

Problem is that the market is saturated with just about anyone who claims to be able to "speak English". In Krk you can find lots of Chileans, Spanish and Italians teaching English and yet put them to the test they will fall apart. It will be the students who will have the final say and vote with their feet (and their money).

Cien one night for no other reason than "members only".

Yeah from time to time they have parties for guests only. But rarely so you shouldn't any bother. To be honest for the 6 years I lived in the Krak I never once went to Cien (maybe once when I think about it). It was too snobby for me, girls out with their daddies credit cards ect. Easiest place in the world to pull though. Rdza and Błędne Koło were my kinda places, you can wubu dubu to that list as well.

There is no difficulty for any English getting into any pubs or clubs in krk as long as u r not part of a large group. Simples.
