Life / Heart attack/stroke - money please! This is public service healthcare in Radom! [7]

If she is an EU-citizen they must treat her for emergency illnesses (for free). And this is fore sure emergency illnesses.

/Medical student, Poland

Cayenne pepper (or any very hot pepper) is real good for the heart, look it up.

She is in intensive care unit with post-MI and post-stroke. And you think cayenne pepper will help???

how do we get money out of this woman who's paid her public healthcare subs?

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

I mainly miss my family and speaking Polish on everyday basis, but when I compare Poland to the US there are a few things that make Poland superior in my eyes:

So why don't you move back to Poland?

Language / Polish - individual classes or course? [15]

I don't know what's best: going for a course or finding a good teacher and taking individual lessons?

It depends on your individual learning style.

I can recommend the book Polish in 4 weeks (level 1). But it takes much longer than 4 weeks to complete it.

I was also wondering about going to Poland for Polish course

Don't take an intensive course!
Your brain will not have enough time to put it into long-term memory. So it will be stored in short-term memory and you will forget it soon.

But if you want to go to Poland for a few months, it's a good idea.

Polonia / Life in Poland vs Norway - good for children, benefits, etc? [43]

I'm Swedish (most of my life I've lived close to the Norwegian border).

I know several Polish people who moved to Sweden/Norway with their families (esp. doctors). Most of them are really satisfied with their new life. Only 1 of them is thinking about moving back to Poland.

Most Swedish people can only manage to work a few months in Norway before they must return to Sweden unless they are to risk their mental health permanently.

This is not true. I know many Swedes who stay longer and are happy with that.

Also be prepared to be called Jordbærplukker (Strawberry plucker) as many Poles in the old days went here to pluck strawberries (some still do)

This can be true sometimes. However, surveys show that Scandinavians are among the most tolerant people in the world.

News / Upping the speed limit in Poland [92]

Anybody who gets caught speeding on a hand held Police camera is a bit of an idiot really, you just hit the brakes when you see it pointing at you.

1. The operator of the camera usually hide somewhere.
2. Most police lasers use infrared emission, so it's invisible.

News / Upping the speed limit in Poland [92]

The people that want to drive fast do so anyway.

And they have to pay for it.

I had to pay 200 zl for speeding last week. But if you drive too fast, you must be prepared to pay.

Language / Some Ideas for a band name using the Polish language? [94]

Prawda? I've always thought that meant right, correct or true?

(To) prawda (lit. it's the truth) are used when right, correct or true are used in English.

And it means the same thing. You confirm in this way that it's correct (lit. that it's true).

News / Poland hosts lowest proportion of foreigners in the EU [115]

Historically most foreigners in Poland like yourself became the enemy within in Poland.

Examples? (Of people who were not "enemies" when they came to PL, but became it after some time.)

Language / Some Ideas for a band name using the Polish language? [94]

Masakra (lit. masacre)

Used often in Polish language for all kind of things that are considered to be really bad.

However, most Polish bands choose names that sound English.

Travel / Is the atmosphere thinner over the Tatras? [7]

what is the medical term for his condition?

Also one more thing - the bears. Can you fight them? Or maybe negotiate somehow?

I vote for psychosis with delusional beliefs. Negotiating with bears.. interesting.

If he climed quickly above 2400 m, I'd vote for altitude sickness. It usually not occur below 2400 m (8000 ft), so probably not in PL. But it can be a serious condition.

Work / I'M SO SURPRISED BY THIS SALARY FOR IBM in WROCLAW 3000 ZL gross [135]

Well, from our experience in Poland, the "life" starts with at least 4000pln.

Depends on where in PL you live. And most of all, it depends on what contacts you have.

If you lived in PL your whole life, you usually have a lot of contacts. And you have learned how to live cheap with a GOOD standard of living.

I'm impressed when I see how well many students at my university live on a rather small income.

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

There are some structural problems in the economy.

The 2 biggest structural problems are:

1. Polish economy needs a lot of money from EU.
2. Salaries don't increase as much as the cost of living do.

I have never heard anyone here say that it's worse now than 10 years ago. I think more and more Poles start to believe in a good future.

Life / Winter 2010/2011 in Poland, is it going to be bad? [114]

Will we have the three week -10 like last year?

That's nothing. We had 1 month -20/-25 in Bialystok last winter. That was cold.

Wroclaw is one of the warmest cities in Poland.

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

The girl is not married to you, why would she want to be touched?

Well, do you know her?

No wait. You are the kind of girl who thinks that all other girls think in the same way as you do.

Language / usage of taki/taka/takis [11]

tańczysz taki = you dance like this
jesz taka = you eat like that

Tańczysz and jesz are verbs. Verbs are associated with adverbs. Here you use tak. Tańczysz tak and jesz tak. Tak is not conjugated because it's an adverb.

We don't use taki/taka/takie in the situations above, because they are adjectives (not adverbs). And adjectives are associated with nouns.

Taki chleb (masc noun)
Taka kawa (fem noun)
Takie piwo (neutr noun)
