News / Poland A and Ukraine B. Compare how far Poland has advanced. [282]

The fastest way to appreciate just how far Poland has advanced in the last two decades is to make a quick trip to neighbouring Ukraine. The visual evidence is overwhelming.

After waiting for more than two hours to cross into Ukraine at the Hrebenne-Rava Ruska crossing, the first impression one gets of Ukraine is based on the truly enormous potholes on the main road from the border to Lviv, the capital of western Ukraine and one of four Ukrainian cities where matches will be held during next year's European football championship. Cars and trucks crawl along, circling axle-breaking holes.

In Lviv, many of the city's streets are a barely-drivable cobblestone that looks to have last been fixed before the war, while ambitious urban transit plans for the tournament look far from ready.

East of Lviv, the sight of a horse-drawn cart draws barely a glance, and fields are dotted with farmers walking behind horse-drawn ploughs- views that used to be ubiquitous in Poland but are now a rarity - even in the country's poorest areas.

So why is it a sucha big difference between these two countries? Both have been "free" since the ealy 90's.

Why didnt Ukraine follow Poland and the rest of the ex-communist countries after the fall of the Iron Curtain‎?

Real Estate / Warsaw City in 2020 [58]

złota 44 is slowly being built

Sloooooowlyyyyyyyy

My imagination can`t buld those buildings , which I regret very much .

I think you need to watch the movie "The Men Who Stare at Goats" for some inspiration!

You have clearly never even been to Warsaw. Either that or you are just a compulsive liar.

Harry seems that you're integrating very well into the Polish society! Pure Polish mentality.

Genealogy / Do you think all Slavs are white? [178]

Darker Slavs may be descended from fisherman.

Word!

There was a Polish guy at the footie today that had a really dark complexion. I'm not accustomed to seeing that. Definitely not white.

Iv'e seen some really dark girls in Poland and they were 100% Polish, my guess would be that they had some Tatar relatives.

Normal people ;)

Don't think so... But i guess the slavic people got some kinda White pride mentality.

Genealogy / Do you think all Slavs are white? [178]

Who the F wants to be white?

.

Seriously speaking now... I don't think there is so much difference betwen the people inside of Europe.

The current U.S. Census definition includes white "people having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East or North Africa. So even if your skin got olive color you're still "white".

In north of Poland people tend to be "whiter" and in the south darker. Same goes for Germany and France.

History / The Piast dynasty did most for Poland [24]

Poland had become a rich, modern in comparison with its contemporaries, and respected country in all of Europe.

I wonder what would happend if Poland would not unite with Lithuania and continue being under the Piast rule.

History / Civilian life in Poland (Krakow) during the WW2. [30]

Here is an interview with Sam Silberberg an Holocaust survivor from Krakow.

Sept. 1, 1939

Artillery shells exploded outside the Silberberg house. The children of the family marveled at them.

"We could hear the whizzing noises of the shells as they passed by us and exploded," said Silberberg. "To us children it was like fireworks, but we didn't realize how dangerous it was until my father told us to get away from the windows."

Silberberg's father ordered a horse and carriage to take the family east to Krakow. They thought the city would be safe.

"The Vistula river runs through the middle of the city and has many historical sites and royal palaces," Silberberg said.

UK, Ireland / Do Poles and EU Citizens exploit the British welfare state [129]

England is being stretched almost to the point of economic collapse, joining the EU is going to be their downfall.

Loot what you can from a sinking ship! I hope more Poles will exploit the British welfare system!

News / Poland ready to receive Libyan refugees [159]

Gadaffi applies maoist principles and knows that everything will be decided in the military field. It is the diplomacy of guns.

He aint really a threat with his small army. Sooner or later he will loose.

It is not Poland responsibility to host these people. The countries who are there like the US, UK, France should.

News / Poland ready to receive Libyan refugees [159]

Poland is ready to receive up to a dozen of the over 800 Libyan refugees who have arrived to Malta following the insurgency against the Gaddafi regime in Tripoli.

thenews/international/artykul153194_poland-ready-to-receive-libyan-refugees.html

Why should Poland and other countries that have nothing to do with the libyan war take care of the war victims? Why don't the French that are so eager to lead the war against libya take care of the war victims?

Life / Polish patriotism, what does it mean to you? [46]

I don't want to upset you... but you're nothing special. Most Poles have szlacheckie pochodzenie. Nothing to be snotty about

Who said im snotty?

I don't believe you. I also have some vague szlacheckie pochodzenie (zubożała szlachta) and additionally from 2 different lines. I don't think it can be anything special.

about 70% of the poles who got some blue blood comes from the petty "Drobna" nobility. And then we got the middle and upper nobility.

Right. Were they among the ones who sold Poland to Russia because they didn't want the peasants obtaining any rights?

Some of them yes, but with all the blood mixing throughout the centuries its impossbile to not have some bad eggs in the family.

Well, suffice it to say that Pan Hrabia was occasionally known to sow some oats amongst the chambermaids and kitchen helpers of peasant stock...so many more may have noble genes than one might imagine.

Indeed but those were the "gołota" naked nobility with no rights hold any public offices or be members of the Sejm. First after 3 generations they had equal rights to the offices and the Sejm.

News / Poland liberalizes drug laws in effort to focus on treatment [35]

The Polish parliament Friday passed new legislation that gives prosecutors more leeway in seeking punishments for people caught carrying small amounts of drugs.

The new law allows prosecutors to end investigations if the suspect only has the drugs for personal use and is not a drug dealer. Even in cases involving larger amounts, the accused can avoid prosecution by voluntarily agreeing to drug treatment therapy.

History / Whoever is a Pole, of Polish blood and Polish origin... MUST listen this song of Racowie [57]

you can but, only you know what is `opposite` in this case. Will you share it with rest of us?

I would say that The Szlachta used Oriental cloths to show their Samatian heritage. Not to underline it.

exactly. Just i don`t understand why you need that `;)`

Serfs my friend. Serfs...

Who didn`t betray Poland???

Nigeria?

History / Whoever is a Pole, of Polish blood and Polish origin... MUST listen this song of Racowie [57]

we would say that clothes during Sarmatism in Poland were phase in Polish history where nobility wanted to underline its connection with ancient Sarmatians

I would say the opposite...

Polish nobility even wanted to announce that have ancestral right to expand its rule on wast territory of what was once free Sarmatia.

And they did ;)

Eastern Ukriane were the ancient sarmatian lands, and who owned them in the 16-17'th century? The Poles!
