History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

perpetrator-nation

This bullsh*t can only come from a representative of the World Jewish Congress, really. I hope they don't forget to call each and every member of the Israeli "perpetrator-nation" a baby killer next time Israel attacks the Gaza strip.

Genealogy / Are there other ways of finding records that exist further back than 1826? [22]

part of the problem might stem from destruction of books due to war

Destruction during WW2, widespread looting by the Soviet army, clerics being too lazy to keep records in earlier times, burnt down churches ... there are many reasons why records are missing in the area that is now Poland.

Looks as if your ancestors moved to that village from another place, as you suspected already. Try to find census records for that area after 1826 instead, maybe land deeds or other court records. They often contain valuable information about a person like name and place of birth.

Is it possible to gain access to the Russian archives?

AFAIK it is possible, but it can be very difficult.

Did you see that the LDS has a whole bunch of microfilms, too?

Mikrofilm oryginała w Archiwum Diecezjalne, Warszawa.
Poland, Warszawa, Lubotyń Stary (Ostrów Mazowiecka) - Church records:

Akta urodzeń 1808-1825 FHL INTL Film 995596
Akta małżeństw 1808-1813, 1815-1825 FHL INTL Film 995597
Akta zgonów 1809-1825 FHL INTL Film 995598
Akta urodzeń, małżeństw, zgonów 1826-1835 FHL INTL Film 995599
Akta urodzeń, małżeństw, zgonów 1836-1849 FHL INTL Film 995600
Akta urodzeń, małżeństw, zgonów 1850-1859 FHL INTL Film 995601
Akta urodzeń, małżeństw, zgonów 1860-1862, 1864-1869 FHL INTL Film 995602

If the records you are looking for are not on those films, then I would guess that the church books are sitting in a Russian archive and not in a Polish one. The region came to the Russian Empire in 1795, right?

UK, Ireland / Brits to protest against foreigners in the workforce, including Poles. [289]

Re-unification and common sense...

Hm, only in East Germany or also in West Germany? I had to deal with VERDI once in Hessia in the late 90's, and they were a major, influencial pain in the a*s. That's why I ask. That they've lost some influence over time, as you say, makes sense though.

I read that real wages fell 60% in Germany from the early nineties.

You read some funny things... :)

einblick.dgb.de/grafiken/2005/12/grafik02/

Between 1995 and 2004, income fell by 0.9%. The source listed above is the DGB (Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund), by the way!

Law / The 'Secret' of Poland's Economic Success [83]

someone has to be able/skilled enough to do the job

Depends on the job. How many positions for highly skilled workers are really created by foreign investment (and how many of them are senior positions to be filled by locals), and how many are more comparable to slave work in a call center?

The difference between a highly skilled worker in Poland and elsewhere in western Europe is that the Polish one is much cheaper than his counterpart. That's why Poland is so interesting for investors at the moment. At some point of time this will change, as Ireland has shown.

Law / The 'Secret' of Poland's Economic Success [83]

that the only criteria a company would take into consideration is the cost of labour

Not the only criteria, but the most important (cost) factor together with favourable local tax laws. Why do you think corporations like Dell and others invested so heavily in Ireland? Because they loved the country? Same answer for Poland...

I actually have a better life in PL than I did, when I was living in Belgium

Did you have the same job in Belgium as you have now?

Law / The 'Secret' of Poland's Economic Success [83]

"One in 10 world's investors plans to invest in Poland for the 1st time. More than 25 percent positively perceived the Polish market with higher investors' confidence indexes being scored by only by India, China and Brazil."

ottawa.polemb.net/index.php?document=58

Only India, China and Brazil are seen in a more positive light by investors than Poland. Hmmm, wonder why that is? Let's see...

"Poland is perceived as the second best destination after China for foreign investment in production sector due to its convenient geographical location in the heart of Europe and competitive labour costs."

paiz.gov.pl

As I said before, it's the low cost of labour. Take that away and you will see how strong the Polish economy really is. At the moment your people are fooled by the government and exploited by foreign corporations.

we've just been doing better then the rest of Europe lately

No doubt. Just don't forget to mention the reasons for this positive development.

Law / The 'Secret' of Poland's Economic Success [83]

I don't know what all this "bragging" about Poland's economic growth is all about. The country has enjoyed significant foreign investment over a long period of time due to its comparetively low wages. Change this cost factor to the disadvantage of the corporations and we will see how strong Poland's economy really is.

Life / Making Real Friends in Poland [9]

Polish people can distinguish, between false and true

I wasn't talking about true and false friends actually. What I was trying to say is that the older you get the more you will lose contact to people who - at a certain point in time - might have been your friends. In the end there are only a few left, and those are your real friends you will have for the rest of your life.

Life / Making Real Friends in Poland [9]

Santander, one day you will find out that most of your friends are gone. You will be left with a handful of people whom you have known all your life. Those are your real friends, and their nationality is not important.
