News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

PiS doesn't care about

PiS doesn't care as much about the niche groups Delph is constantly fishing out, but about the nation as a whole. Most Poles would like a Sunday off.

distorting the free market

It's the biggies that are distoring the "free" market by denying the little guy of equal opportuitnies. They can couch it in all kinds of nice-sounding but deceptive euphemisms -- market-friendly, single market, level playing fiedl, equal opportunities, etc, etc. ad nauseam -- bur the fact remains it's the moneybags and Heil Merkels that rule the root. The rich get richer and the poor get shafted....

Every single government increases the number of pencil-pushers

That may be true, but there is one crucial difference. No-one ever remembers you thrashing PO when they increased the number of pencil-pushers* by 100,000.
Nor for that matter PO's VAT rise, gambling scandal, unfinished road building ahead of Euro 2012, Sowa & Co. tape scandal, OFE heist, illicit TK appointments and many, many more. A former PO MP has recnetly been indicted on corruption charges.

*Maybe keyboard punchers or tappers would be more up to date.-

free market

A sovereign state can enact anti-monopoly legislation, price ceilings, taxes, tax breaks, special ecoomic zones and other mechanisms as needed, free market or not.
Why is it you always seem to favour and defend the interersts of the already filthy rich capitalists and other banks and Biedronkas rather than Poland's hero -- the little guy.

iconic monument

Interesting paradox, KOD Poland-bashing traitors, who have seriously damaged Poland's interantional reptuation equating themselves with the 1956 workers' upsurge.

2% tax to all retail businesses in Poland

The brunt of the tax burden will be borne by foreign biggies... Initially there was talk of taxing on the basis of shop floor area but the latest is that a shop's turnover will be the criterion. Small shops will pay less and bigger ones will pay more. That will make the corner family-owned shops more competitive unless the biggies start raisiing their prices to pass the tax on to customers. The law should therefore include a monitoring mechanism -- spot inspections perhaps. A supermarket that inordinately raises its prices could even face losing its retail licence.

treated as untrustworthy

123 years of partitions and half a century of Nazi/Soviet enslavement have taught Poles that the name of the game is to outfox the system. That has been carried over from PRL to III RP. There's a lack of long-term planning and thinking amongst many Polish businessmen who often seem to espouse the "grab the money and run" philosophy, flitting from one venture to another rather than re-investing and building up the business they have already developed.

That's why a massive education campaign is needed to teach entrepreneurship, market planning, logistics, the importance of PR, the need for original Polish designs, in-country production, recognisable brands and logos. It seems Morawiecki is on this general track but will he be able to put it into practice???

simply not true

So in your view 14 - 1 is a fair breakdown? But all in all -- the legal niceties and technicalities notwiothstadning -- the average Pole is sick of KOD and the whole debate and just wants to get on with his life. Don't the political class see this? I guess not because they live in their own little world of petty poliics and one-upmanship.

personal benefit

Personal prejudice in this case. You worry about the relatively few emergency workers who do major shopping on Sunday but not about the milllions who would like nothign better than Sudnay off- The coalminers were just na example of a group no-one has ever heard you express your concern about. When Soldiarity was first emerging, one of the miners' demands were free Sundays.

A free Sunday law coudl make exceptions for corner shops. At present, petrol stations stock food, so they too could be exemtped. BTW in the US the concept of selling booze at petrol staitons as is the case in Poland would sound weird and freaky indeed.

people who lose their jobs

Never heard you express concern for coalminers, often their families' sole providers, turned out of work, although their job is far more taxing and dangerous than punching a cash register. That's called hypocrisy or moralność Kalego. If you don't know what that means, never ask an expat wannabe Pole, because they won't know either (without googling).!

none of the people

Indeed. This is a power struggle within the political class which all too oftne live a life of their own. Ordinary Poles are sick of the TK and KOD and "mad Gipsy" Petru in particular. There's a joke going round: I switch on the telly -- Petru, I tune into the radio news -- Petru. I open a newspaper -- again Petru. It's got to where I'm afraid to open the fridge!

church-to-the-supermarket

If the supermarket were closed churchgoers would make other arrangements. Supermarkets could extend their hours on other days and that way not only their employees but the entire nation (minus a few emergency workers) would have a glorious Sunday off. That way everybody would be happy. Some make-work like scooping up doggy-go in public parks could be provicef for godless PF-ers who claim they're bored on Sundays.

but the people were

I imagine the UK's despiritualised/animalised rabble were happy. But Poland is luckily still a spiritual place that acknowledges time-honoured traditions and higher values that go beyond consuming and excreting.

Travel / INFORMATION ABOUT TOURISTS ARRIVAL IN POLAND [15]

tourist infrastructure

It's always "coś za coś", isn't it? Tourism is a great source of income. on the other hand, throngs of tourists can trample and litter a country's natural habitats and give rise to insightly road signs, tacky souvenir stalls and snack bars. Tourism also encourages the drug trade, prostitution and other unsavoury developments.

a long way to go

...and will never match the favourite tourist haunts. Northern Euopeans are naturally attracted to the beaches, surf and palm trees of the south as well as the greater number of historical monuments in other countries.

more respectable and decent politicians

I have never referred disreseptfully to respectable poltiicians such as Kaczyński, Szydło, Ziobro, Gowin et al, only to Platfus scammers and ex-commie scum. Thank God they've been neutralised to a large extent and the Polish nation can freely develop without their toxic interference.

Chivalry is the resort of the despicable

Sounds like somethign your hero and guru, that ol' perv Wilde would say. I think he also called patriotism the last resort of tyrants or some such nonsense.

losing their jobs

That sounds like typical KOD-style clutching-at-straws codswallop. If supermarkets are clsoed on Sundays that doesn't mean people will start shopping and eating less. They will simply readjust their schedules giving the majority a most looked- forward-to day off.

You're another Polish wannabe who can wave 5 Polish passports in people's face without having a stitch of true Polioshness in you. A Pole is chivalrous by nature and would never treat a lady with such disrespect.

ordinary men and women

These innocent well-meaning people are a sad and sorry lot becuase they are being used by cynical schemers -- the Petrus, Schetynas, Kijowskis (sorry, Kijowski is too stupid to be a schemer -- he's just a fig leaf!), Neumanns, Michnikites, etc.

the only time they could be there

You're really picking up scattered peripherals to make your case. I think the idea is to limit large-scale trade at big supermarkets, hypermarkets and shopping centers. Small corner shops employing no more than say 2 or 3 could be exempted as could your Sunday course attendees.Your line of defence is called reductio ad absurdam!

forward thinking entrepreneur and entrepreneurs

I agree, that's why a top priority for the govt should be the promotion of Polish entrepreneurship, design, brands, logos, etc., and Morawiecki has made statements to that effect. How abut a course in "How to set up a viable retail chain".

Dunno if the restrictive EU strait-jacket would allow no taxes for starting up Polish entreprenurs for a fixed period (1-2 years) and other incentives and preferential treatment.

ordinary people

The ordinary marchers are the useful idiots who don't realise they're marching for a bunch of cynical,power-mad political losers who can't wait to get back to the trough. Naturally they are not told al this -- instead it's all neatly wrapepd up in nice-sounding pro-democratic rhetoric. The hapless suckers are in for a rude awakening when the whole KOD project fizzles out and collapses and its leaders true motives emerge.

moved from

Globalism, single market, level playing field, etc. are all nicely phrased ephemisms but the bottom line is that the bulk of the profits flow out of the country and only a bare minimum stays in Poland to allow the business to keep ticking over. The pudding is savoured abroad! Call it what you will, but the most apt term IMO is neo-colonial exploitation!

pro-democracy rallies are all

No, they are all either the cynical niche leadership (a small minority) who know what the score is and the throngs of deluded marchers aka "useful idiots" whom the former have whipped up into a frenzy and convinced they are marching for democracy. There are also the Michnikite demagogues stirring up unrest behind the scenes. Quite a motley collection!

rrelevance

Yes, as far as the KOD-ites and exploitative foreign banks and corporations are concerned, it's completely irrelevant where the bulk of the profits flow as long as they flow OUT OF POLAND!
