Genealogy / Looking for Chrabaszewski Relatives in Poland [7]

My grandparents on both my father and mother's side emigrated to the USA in the first decade of the 1900's

You will get quite a lot of possible results at: familysearch LDS

It should be quite easy to work out who you want, if you know the town they settled in in the States.

Try name variations for best results.

The Social Security Death Index should give place of birth too.

The LDS don't have everyone, but I think you have a good chance of finding someone, as I've already checked some possibilities with regard to your names.

Genealogy / Looking for Chrabaszewski Relatives in Poland [7]

Phillipkowski.

Nothing under this name at Ellis Island.com

It could be under Filipkowska, which does appear.

They are both pronounced the same apart from the final letter 'a', which shows female form.

Chrabaszewski

Nothing under this name at Ellis Island.com

A soundex search, elsewhere, did bring up Grabiszewski.

1. They may not have entered the States at New York.
2. Please, consider alternative spellings.
3. Ship's Records (basic info) will show point of departure, but maybe not home town.
4. The ship's manifest, when you find it, will/should show next of kin in country of departure. This is your clue as to where they came from.

For Stanley. Try Stanislaw or Stanisław. There are thirty-eight passengers named Stanislaw Michalak. All but one have original residence. But I can't find Saleoma

I need more specific dates, if possible.

Law / Laundromats in Poland? Good business venture or not? [90]

Somehow they are managing now which probably means at parents

I put forward the arguement that some of them go home simply to get their washing done.

It would only work in big cities, possibly holiday resorts too.

Staff would have to be onhand. Otherwise your laundromat would become a doss house.

If Poles are using them in the UK then Poles will use them here too.

Are they using them in the UK ?

Law / Laundromats in Poland? Good business venture or not? [90]

Do you think that opening a laundromat in Poland as a business venture is a good idea?

I mentioned this on the forum a couple of years ago. No-one took any notice.

I wouldn't use a laundromat, but I imagine there are a few hundred thousand students who might.

If I had the cash I would invest.

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

An omnibus that's all in verse
If I had written, it would be worse

Precision flows through his pen
Can we match him ? how and when ?

A wonderful talent for all to see
We read his thoughts with utter glee

A talented wordsmith, extraordinaire
The rest of us just don't compare

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

miranda,

Thanx for the latest edition. After spending time in some of the threads the weekly Omnibus Edition brings back a sense of reality. It's difficult to explain, but I value your work. (As I did, of course, szarlotka's) :)

Very good, miranda.

It would frighten the life out of me, if I had to write the Omnibus Edition.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I've just seen this on the news. Not good.

I went through the Wroclaw flood of 97, so I know what it's like.

Anyone caught up in this latest one... my thoughts are with you.

Life / Tattoos and Popular culture in Poland [51]

Do you think he was paid to write it?

Lord knows. It's a well written piece of rubbish. Telling us everything and saying nothing. Also, it is out of date. Not so many people these days wear an excessive amount of studs. And older people are neither shocked nor give a toss.

but the customer (victim?) is usually unwittingly exposing himself to an invasive proceudre that is a common cause of deadly type C hepatitis.

Just about everyone I meet these days has a tattoo. Not one of these people has ever mentioned hepatitis C. I've never heard of death by tattoo either.

Love / My boyfriend is on a Polish dating site [158]

You need to read Andy Capp. It deals with the consequences of letting down ones loved ones. The method of correction is the rolling-pin.

Love / My boyfriend is on a Polish dating site [158]

The problem is that now they all hate him which makes it difficult if I decide to stay with him :)

Do they hate him for what he has done to you ? Or have they always had a strong dislike for him.

Is it possible that if you stay with him you'll lose one or two friends.

Don't let him, or anyone, cause a divide between you and your family.

Love / My boyfriend is on a Polish dating site [158]

gracie,

I think zabko is telling us that she now has control of the situation.

Maybe because of the advice so far. Maybe not.

I don't think that we should continually tell people with personal problems that they should leave their partner. We never know all the details.

However, with what we know, and can surmise, I tend to agree with your post.

zabko,

Glad to hear that you now have some answers. I would consider myself very fortunate, if I were in his position. Some people might not be so forgiving.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

If you set up on your own then the answer would be not necessarily.

Private teaching work is down to reputation.

I've been headhunted twice and have no qualifications.

UK, Ireland / Posting from UK to Poland....not good! [53]

If they cannot locate the parcel then royal mail has to pay compensation

The point is that the time given to locating the parcel is too great.

If they lose it then the postal service HAS to pay compensation which would mean your parcel gets the priority.

No. First they have to track the parcel. And when it gets to Poland someone is playing the system. Also, Have you ever tried to make a claim and then follow it up with phone calls.

This is a problem I have. Send one parcel and it usually arrives. Send more than one and maybe half of them arrive. This has been going on for years. And don't think that registered post helps. It doesn't.
