News / PIS councillor wants to censor Poland's history book [148]

The cause of anti-Semitism and all forms of racist is ignorance.

Ignorance, fear and stupidity.

whether some members of the PiSlamic State want Poles to be racist

Fear and hatred serve their cause.

Language / "Cup of coffee" translated in Poland as Kubek kawy. Why not a mug? [70]

I actually like 'po turecku', it has a lot of flavour. For the past few years I've been using an expensive and fancy machine, the kind where you just press a button, however that's now packed up and until I buy either another or something different I've been drinking 'po turecku'.

Very hard to understand the appeal of instant coffee.

News / Legal opposition threatened by Poland's regime [19]

Kacznski's junta have led to Poland today being "a laughing stock, not only in the EU but also in the world".

Even their supporters feel this. And wish they didn't.

only a curiosity

Much more than a curiosity I-S.

In that he failed.

Not really. Before Zamenhof there was little or no understanding of the concept of interlanguage.

I advised him to lecture those who actually took part in some Russian pogrom.

best to 'lecture' those who would try to airbrush it out of history or try to deny Polish involvement. As this PiS councillor wants to do.

I advice you to get in touch with them ( maybe some spiritual séance would be in order)

No need for that, I-S, the Bialystok Pogrom is very well documented from primary sources.

his artificial language a kind of achievement but as a mean to an end ( a better communication between people) it failed spectacularly.

A great achievement, and much honoured and respected by linguists and humanitarians today. Zamenhof was one of the early Twentieth Century's most distinguished Poles.

Here, when you ask for a coffee they want to know if is black white, 'sypana', instant or from the 'ekspres'.

But it's fine to start off "a coffee please". If someone asked for a "filiżanka kawy" they'd probably say that it isn't a china shop ;-)

the pogrom was carried out by Bialystok residents

Quite. It was very well-documented at the time and researched since. This is just another case of historical revision in the style of the PRL.

Essential not to normalise this, however of course the more they do it, the bigger the backlash.

cup bowl shaped

There are of course cylindrical cups (coffee always seems to taste nicer from a straight-sided white cup) and some pretty odd shaped mugs.

With the difference between English and Polish, we have to take into account headwords - important in English, sometimes a challenge for speakers of other languages.

Basically, a mug is a type of cup, an armchair is a type of chair, a roll is a type of bread.

News / Polish Bishop criticises Smolensk cult [12]

@Ironside
I doubt you're particularly in touch with what people, including clergy, think here now. He's a very good man and a rest authority here. The nearest thing we have now to Ks. Tischner.

a firm view that clergy, church and religion should say out of the politics?

Looks like you misunderstand - perhaps deliberately. Bishop Pieronek is very highly regarded here - something which gives his very justified condemnation of the Smolensk Cult and the PiS junta a lot of impact.

And he, like the late Fr Tischner, has a habit of saying exactly what everyone else is thinking.

it certainly doesn't help PiS but merely reinforces its image as the crazy conservative conspiracy party...

This much is true.

cult of martyrdom

We should worry about all the statues going up everywhere.

News / Polish Bishop criticises Smolensk cult [12]

Bishop Tadeusz Pieronek, a former secretary-general of the Polish Episcopal Conference and very highly regarded here in Poland has said publicly what most people here think.

He accused Kaczynski and the PiS junta of trying to create a "quasi-religious 'cult' " around his late brother Lech Kaczynski.

He said the monthly (yes, monthly!) processions through Warsaw to commemoration of the Smolensk disaster, led by Kaczyński, are "pure politics, without religious character, During the speeches there are no words for the victims of the disaster. It's no longer about the dead. It's about politics."

Worth mentioning that a survey published this week found that 74% of Poles would like the marches to end; only 14% want them to continue.

Polonia / Learning Polish in Amsterdam [19]

learning Polish in Amsterdam must again be akin to learning Hungarian or the like in Paris.

Exactly - which is why a private teacher is probably his best bet. If he wants to learn Polish but has to be physically in Amsterdam, and he's hampered by a lack of Dutch, this is the only practical option.

their English was generally atrocious, substandard and even not always comprehensible, but I pretended of course as though I didn't notice a thing..we got along fine.

A bit like here in Poland very often - some people, usually of a type don't expect or sometimes want a foreigner to speak Polish. It can be a rather similar in the Netherlands too.

Dutch however would be my priority for language learning if I lived there - it's a drag when you're with a group of people and one can't join in the conversation, a bigger drag when you all speak the language but one plonker insists on speaking English to you because they can and everyone else gets p*ssed off. He can do self-study and get an occasional cheap flight to Warsaw if he wants to practise his Polish.

Polonia / Learning Polish in Amsterdam [19]

I am curious if it would be possible to continue learning Polish while I'm there. I do not speak Dutch, so the Polish courses offered (at least those I found on google) are not possible for me.

There are Polish language lessons available in Amsterdam.
The People's University (Volksuniversiteit) runs part time courses for adults and has a branch in Amsterdam. They only put the courses on if there's sufficient demand so it would make sense to contact them as soon as possible to indicate an interest. You would probably need to improve your Dutch first, a good idea if you're going to live there.

Your best bet is to find a private teacher who also speaks English. Ask at the People's University - they presumably hire teachers from time to time and may be able to refer you to one of those teachers. A better bet could be the Forum Szkół Polskich w Holandii. It's aimed at children but you may well find one of their teachers is willing to do private lessons and is also an English speaker.

there are numerous Polish immigrants in and around Amsterdam who'd love to finally learn Dutch

Doubtless many, however English is very widely spoken in Amsterdam. A Russian friend, fluent in Polish went there to work. He told prospective employers that he'd learnt Dutch. Most said that was unnecessary since all their staff and clients all speak English.

Scots isn't a "separate" language

Yes it is. Just as Walloon is not a dialect of French.

Food / Making American cheeses (Polish and EU ones are terrible!) [100]

Just in case anyone was tempted to listen to the claims of that guy from Optimus and rely on Polish or other soft cheese as a therapy:

First up, the study was looking at rats not humans.
... as a human you'd have to eat more than your bodyweight in cheese to get the desired amount of nisin to hve a cancer-busting effect.

metro.co.uk/2016/01/14/science-has-given-us-yet-another-reason-to-eat-cheese-5623206/

The cheese that the guy makes is OK, but not exceptional and definitely not the reason his cancer is currently in remission - the surgery and chemotherapy he received had a lot more to do with it.

Mr Kluska is said to have cured himself from cancer and overweight through eating this cheese.

Cheese is not a cure for cancer.

I've eaten that sheeps' cheese. It doesn't differ much from any other. Very expensive too.

Love / Different relationship... can it work with Pakistani girl and Polish guy? [129]

islam is the only faith that has not changed

Many changes, many types. Some revere Hussain and Ali, some don't. Some are Ahmaddiya, some not. The same with Christianity - different variants exist.

In both Pakistan and Poland you can find different doctrinal and cultural viewponts.
