Life / "Londynczycy" - new Polish soap [62]

I caught a couple of minutes of this programme. I liked the use of English and Polish language. The short piece that I saw seemed almost like a language teaching aid.

Did I just catch it at a certain point in time or is the whole programme a mix of language ?

In the clip that I saw we got an English stereotype opinion about Polish girls.
The polish guy quickly put the other guy right.

Love / Different relationship... can it work with Pakistani girl and Polish guy? [129]

If this Polish man means something to you, you need to be able disappear and say goodbye to your culture forever.

That might not be such a good idea. sweet_g has never met the boyfriend's family. If he had problems with his family accepting her... then what.

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

25% over 170 cm,1% over 180 cm.These are the statistics in my opinion.(frm personal observation and estimation).

I wouldn't argue much with this. It seems a decent estimation.

Genealogy / Polish person's average height? [210]

My two cents:

There are many women over 170cm, some over 180cm. They stand out, but are not a big percentage of the whole.

The average for women would be under 170cm simply because all the older, shorter women would bring the average down.

Men seem to fall into two groups: Those who are over 187cm, a small but noticable group, and those who are around 175 - 180cm

Twenty-year-olds are definitely taller than the same age group twenty years ago.

Love / Different relationship... can it work with Pakistani girl and Polish guy? [129]

sweet_g,

The only thing that I can think of that might help is to find other people, of your religion, in mixed relationships. Talk to them... and possibly introduce them to your family. This might help you and your family to understand possible problems and benefits.

There must be some sort of support group for young people in your position. Check the internet.

I also feel that because your boyfriend was working on your house... your family have already pre-judged him in some way.

Not even family accepts

If you come from a traditional background then you must speak to your elders. You can't afford to break ties with your family and they know it.

Your arguement will have to be strong... yet polite.
If the relationship continues over a period of time then you have a chance to show them how serious the matter is.

Really, the same thing applies with your boyfriend's family.

Is there another member of your family in a mixed relationship ?

Is religion strict in your family ?

Have your boyfriend and family met ?

What was the reaction ?

News / Poland's fight against paedophilia [277]

Well... thats a lot of tax money going to keeping these sickos off the streets.

When they are locked up for good they are absolutely no threat to my children.

It's a price/tax I'm willing to pay.

So you are saying that repeat pedophiles will be led to the perform pedophilia, no matter if they are castrated or not,

I'm saying that paedophiles will repeat offend until they are caught.

When they are caught they should be locked up for life.

If they are in prison, for life, they don't need castration.

If they are released after serving time and on the same day of release castrated...this means they are punished twice.

I'm trying to think the above through with regard to the law. Nothing else.

But if I had to deal with a paedophile... the law wouldn't protect him.

Also, the criminally insane are locked up in a secure unit. In many cases for life.

I will concede that even some of these people are put on various drugs for various reasons... and there may be an arguement that paedophiles are no different.

A schizophrenic may be put on drugs to, among other things, pacify him.
Maybe the same arguement could be used for paedophiles.

Without knowing what prison term and treatment is available... it is difficult to assess

and you can't stop pedophile from being pedophile.

I've already said as much.

Also, I never said that they should be released from prison.

They should be in a secure unit. For life.

McCoy,

My point is that this new legislation makes no sense.

To be punished twice for the same crime makes a mockery of law.

Lock 'em up and that's that.

We don't have the death penalty, so the bullet is not an option.

Prison is a punishment for the crime

This is my point.

Castration is prevention against future crimes.

So now we pre-judge people.

Let's chop the hands off burglars. Just in case !

What do you think about this legislation?

It seems that chemical castration comes after the crime. When it is too late.

Those who are driven to paedophilia will still commit the crime.

And what good is castration when these people should be in prison

Or are we now saying that chemical castration is now the sentence and we won't bother with prison.

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

Wroclaw proposed

That was some time ago and not in the thread you mention. In fact, not in any thread.

I think it was Seanus who was in favour of ditching the thread.

At least I got a mention. I'm beginning to think I'm that piece of furniture that everyone walks around and never takes any notice of.

UK, Ireland / Hand washing at public toilets in the UK [75]

You would probably get funny looks and maybe even taken away by the men in white coats if every time you went to the toilet, you then went to the sink and gave your tackle a good scrub

Our muslim friends do this apparently

You will find lots of possibilities. To narrow it down you'll need to provide a first name.

Genealogy / Search for ancestors: LULA last name [5]

There are a few entries with this name at: familysearch

The only ones with place of birth are listed under Germany. But that is old Germany, before the border changed.

The last name on its own is not much help in this case as some other nationalities have the same name.

UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

Britain's Polish workers are heading home in search of a better life – and it's our loss, says Harry de Quetteville.

telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/3248852/Polish -immigrants-leaving-Britain-What-the-Poles-did-for-us.html

An interesting, if a little over the top, article about Poles leaving Britain.

The comments following the article are interesting, although one or two show stereotypes.

Life / Polish clothing - Polish folk costumes [28]

You might find some video on youtube of folk groups wearing national costume. There have been one ore two pop songs with people wearing something akin to national dress. Usually anything connected to the mountains.
