However the visa requirements are putting a huge cost on doing so.

I've not read all your posts, but if this is about a Russian woman visiting you... be careful.

Sending money to cover costs used to be a typical scam.

Life / School system in Poland? [59]

Do you mean state school ?

If so, you usually have to pay 5 to 10 zloty towards something, about once a month. It's usually for a trip or school function. You will have to pay for school books too.

Food / How to cook Frozen pierogi? Boil or Fry? [90]

I do this sometimes, but find that it doesn't do the pastry much good.

However, if you buy them at a kiosk, they are often reheated in the microwave.

Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

can't understand what a/an/the means.

I have a cat = I have one cat.

I have an orange = I have one orange.

The cat (that I'm talking about) is black.

A/an = one

The = the obvious one / the one we all know / the one I'm talking about

edit: the above is to help you understand. It does get more complex.

Please accept my apologies.

Don't be daft :) I wasn't having a go.

Maybe, photocopy the image. If you change the contrast it might make the lettering clearer... plus you should be able to enlarge it.

Genealogy / Re: Marska family connections [14]

Even when I download the image and then enlarge... it can't be read.

If you can't get the shot in focus... try changing the contrast... or do it in black and white. It might make it easier to read.

When I click on the image... it gets blocked.

Life / Bollywood in Poland [32]

Shah Rukh Khan is the craze among Polish youth

We have at least a dozen of his films in this house.

Bollywood films are on TV sometimes

I put Shah in the forum story when the kids were watching one of his DVDs.

There are Indian/Bollywood events in Poland.

And on this forum there is a thread about Bollywood inspired clothing.

It might come as a surprise to some, but yes, Bollywood is doing well in Poland.

Food / Polish food in Pictures. [277]

There are some pierogi on pages 2 & 3 of this thread. They are mixed in with other foodstuff.

You might also find pictures on other food threads.

Just write pierogi in the searchbox. I'm sure you'll find what you want.

Genealogy / Wolochowicz [14]

I am having a difficult time finding any family members in Poland. Great grandfather michael Wolochowicz came to the US in 1885 at the age of 16. No record of any other family

mgwolo,

Have you found your Great-Grandfather at Ellis Island Records.

If you can find him and if there is record of him on the Ship's Manifest. Then it might/should list next-of-kin.

Sometimes next-of-kin can be a relative, sometimes not.

You might also find the town or area he came from too.

Problem: it will cost money to find out.

Have you done a search at familysearch ?

It is also worth doing a name check at JewishGen

You will have to join JewishGen to do a name search. It's free.

search tip: The first time you search at these sites... only enter the surname. Then if you get too many results you can add more info and do another search.

Check: ancestry. com ... genealogy.com ... polishroots.org

If you would like a few more sites to search... there are quite a few in the Genealogy Resources thread.

Life / Mobile phone companies in Poland [21]

Freebies like mp4 player just for having a cell phone on a contract

To be honest. I think it had more to do with international calls and a long period of time to build up the points.

Life / Mobile phone companies in Poland [21]

why do they worship cell phones that much?

It's all about having what the next guy doesn't have.

And the simple fact that better phones are available.

The phone companies can sucker people in with technology. An upgrade means higher rental. The phone companies play on this. They know that they will get their money back by almost giving away the best phone.

It's also possible to get free gifts along the way.... with a points system. A member of this household not long ago got some sort of iPlayer (mp4) for free.

Life / Mobile phone companies in Poland [21]

I imagine that most people, especially young, get their phone as part of a package.

Example: In this house we have two N95 8GB which came as part of an upgrade.

If it doesn't have MP4, no-one (youth) is interested.

If an iPhone or equivalent is available... then it's a must.

Hope this helps.

Food / traditional breakfasts in Poland [74]

I no longer eat bread and can't think what else you would eat it on apart from toast ?

Try a spoonful on a digestive biscuit.

Edit: Maybe in some sort of cake. (cheesecake)

I'm not a jam person. But there are one or two good ones. Generally I think that the choice is rather limited.

Still waiting for real marmalade to make an appearance on the Polish market.

Life / Which on the list of Polish girl's names do you like the most? [67]

Which on the list of girl's names do you like the most?

Very strange that you put your trust in us to help decide your baby's name.

However, if it helps, I'll go for Izabela and Sabina. Maybe Emilia.

I do understand your problem though. And I wish you both well.

Szarlotka,

I am reminded of your Christmas wish... and despite never knowing your friend I am saddened.

Sincere condolences.
