News / Poland's fight against paedophilia [277]

a little more info: telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/6232530/Poland-approves-forcible-castration-for-paedophiles.html

Under the law, sponsored by Poland's centre-Right government, paedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years or a close relative would have to undergo chemical therapy on their release from prison.

Love / What do Polish Guys Like Women to Wear? [64]

Do Polish men think ugg boots are ugly?

I doubt it. Polish women don't wear them. So I also doubt many men here have expressed an opinion.

Doc Martins,

DM's were the fashion a few years ago. Some young women still wear them.

It might be worth checking the Closterkeller (goth-rock) website. They should have a link to a rock-goth fashion house.
Also, check the Rammstein apparel link. You'll see lots of big boots.

Travel / Which cities in Poland are nice to visit [80]

and every night lanterns are lit by a person lighting them one after another.

This probably goes unnoticed by most folk. I see it as a romantic link to the past. The lamplighter usually starts his rounds about an hour before sunset.

USA, Canada / Sending packages from US to PL, cheapest alternative? [36]

The 'don't leave an advice slip' scam is common with Polish postal workers.

this sort of thing had crossed my mind. i would add to this that it usually happens when the regular delivery person is on holiday. at least that's the case in my part of town.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

I'm not even sure that I would call Polish ketchup... ketchup. A lot of brands are just syrup.
Unlike the bottle of German, Werder Tomaten Ketchup that I have in front of me.
A good mayo can be where it's at, but only on certain foods.

History / Christian Crusaders and Teutonic order in Poland [11]

Why did they hate the Teutonic Order?

this might help: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Grunwald

In the 13th century, the Teutonic Knights, subject directly to the Pope, had been requested by Konrad of Masovia to come to the lands surrounding Culm (Chełmno) to assist in the Crusade against the pagan Prussians. The Teutonic Order received the territory of Prussia via golden bulls from the Emperor and papal edict, which gave them effective carte blanche as owners of a new Christianized state in the region. They later received the territory of further north Baltic coastal regions of what are now Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and showed every sign of further expansion.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

The flooding is bad in some areas and there is more to come. Over 1700 families in the south of Poland have had their households destroyed. Caritas is appealing for aid such as clothes, food and medicine.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

2009.

There is a flood warning for Wroclaw. Some preventative action has already been taken.
Going by previous experience, if anything is going to happen it will be when the river water from the mountains reaches the city. Last time it took two weeks. But as I understand things they already have problems in Kłodzko.

I noticed on the news that there are quite a few flooded areas in Poland at the moment.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

The use of the conjunction 'but' suggests a negative followed by a positive.

Or a positive followed by a negative.

Question. To make things clear, do you prefer a long semetic nose or a slut ?

Language / Problems Polish People Have with Learning English [63]

Are their any teaching techniques that are particularly effective for correcting these common mistakes?

For the 'th' sound... try reading this simple number: 33,333

thirty-three-thousand-three-hundred-and-thirty-three.

You need something that you can have fun with. Try some tongue twisters.

Travel / Coming to Poland with a pet :) [47]

It will take about 7 months to obtain and become valid.

Interesting.

My wife just had a dog chipped, issued a passport... and then travelled the following day.

It's much easier when you live in Poland and travel to neighbouring countries... as the dog already had documents with a record of Rabies jabs, etc.

Some of the UK's rules are beyond stupidity.
