Life / Polish culture versus rotten West [279]

grieves me deeply

Great, I'm glad we're on a similar wave-length over this. Now another question. Since I know next to nothing about today's Ireland (only the stereotypical hotch-potch about shamrocks, clay pipes and leprechauns), you are my only reliable source. Since you know both countries, which of the two has succumbed the most to the toxic, corrosive and down-dumbing codswallop known as "pop culture"?

misdeeds against kids and women in Ireland

What does Atch have to do with such violations? Collective responsibility? Maybe the Jews on PF should be blamed for the misdeeds of Berman, Minc, Fejgin, Światło, Romkowski, Brystygier, Mietkowski, Wolińska and many, many more? In post-war Poland Jews accoutned for only abotu 1% of the population but held one-half of the top posts in the Stalinist security apparatus.

BTW is it true you're French of Spanish origin? Your PF profile doesn't mention that.

you must use the instrumental case

Excellent and easy-to-rememeber explanation. Do you teach (or have you taught) people Polish by chance?

industrialisation

Of course, peasants moving to work in city textile mills or whatever naturally lost some of their rural ways and adopted urban ones in their place. But that was a gradual process and in many ways they bettered themselves in terms of language, culture, hygiene and work ethic. And they weren't harangued 24/7 by anything like today's high-powered commerpop which downdumbs rather than improving anything other than the shakers & movers' finances. Let me ask you point-blank: are you a big fan of today's popculture?

loss of local culture

***Germans "embellishing" (?!) their speech with "trendy"( because English) words such as die Party, der Job, Das Baby, Das Basement, Das Coaching, das Arrangement, etc.

***Once almond-skinned Japanese teens now acne-scarred from two many burgers, chips and KFC...
***Young Poles peppering their speech with wow, f*ck and Jesus, high-fiving and knuckle-bumping like it's going out of style...
***Christmas trees, holly wreaths and Santa-Creeps all over Seoul malls although those gimmicks are absolutely alien to local culture...
.***Rap-crap, the product of black American slumland, is not only alien to European and Asian culture, but perniciously promotes anti-values such as glorifying gangsters, drug dealers, woman-bashers and other forms of violence.

Since there are only 24 hours in the day, those alien imports are definitely pauperising people's cultural awareness and infiltrating the indigenous local heritage with things usually quite inferior. Some may say people are free to choose. Yes and no. When for mega-financial gain the promotion of alien substance is being bankrolled by a multi-billion-dollar brain-washing machine, one can hardly speak of a conscious, well-considered choice.

Life / Tacky commerpop and the slob chic in Poland? [24]

just a rant

So you're on today. Welcome back to the tag team. No this is about language. As a wordsmith, language and languages have always fascinated me.

just a rant

Sorry, I thought you were replying to my Polish definition of "tacky" which was in a totally different post. I was surprised you used the term "rant" in conneciton to a lexicographic post.

modern Poland

This has to do with commerpop in Poland or wherever. Most of it is of non-Polish origin but the topic encompasses anyone who espouses and practises or is influenced by it. This topic was never tackled en masse, only peripherally in numerous otehr posts. Since it impacts so many people's lives, shouldn't one analyse and disucss the mechancis and logistics, propaganda techniques, social engineering, subliminal persusaion and other tools deployed to make so many people do so many stupid, outrageous things to financially benefit a small, already extremely wealthy elite of shakers and movers.

One interesting aspect of commerpop is the subculture, an extremely lucrative field. Thought up in a corporate boardroom and designed on a computer, it creates a plethora of almost limitless financial opportunities including readily exploitable new lifestyles, buzz-words, pop stars, music, feature fims, videos, fashions, gadgets, etc. After a few years, when interest begins to wane, it's back to the boardroom and drawing-board for a new subculture and new set of lifestyles, buzz-words, pop stars, music, feature fims, videos, fashions, gadgets, etc..

Language / Why is there no Polish word for Tacky? No, really, why? [18]

trying to explain 'tacky'

As a noun ("tackiness") maybe "ostentacyjne bezguście" would be appropriate?
As an adjective -- ostentacyjnie bezgustny. A bit clumsy and unwieldy but does it coem close to conveying what you perceive as being "tacky"?

to keep people poor

That is precisely what you Poland-bashers, trough-defenders and lobbyists in the service of foreign interest groups want: keep Poland poor, semi-colonial, non-entrepreneurial and dependent on foreign capital

there weren't many successful banks in Poland

And you aim to keep it that way. Banks control a country's economy and you apparently want it remote-controlled by foreigners. One of your mates calls Polish cars "crappy" and praises VW's assembly operation. He wants to keep Poland out of the motorcar business. You too claim cars, helicopters and such are too complicateda and costly for Poles to manufacture so let foreigners build them adn sell them to Poles. Keep Poladn down, let it remain a pool of cheap manpower for foreign assembly works. If Poles have not been successful in some field they should just give up and turn to foreign iinterests to do the job.

Their 'budgetary trustworthiness' has never been in doubt

So forget your evasive double-talk and beating about the bush and say outright that you back PO's 500 zł for every kid plan and why you think it'll be better for the budget than 500 zł for the second and subsequent children.

Life / Tacky commerpop and the slob chic in Poland? [24]

Other than draining people's pockets and making a fortune for its animators by exploiting gullible wannabees, does today's cheap, tacky, tawdry and tasteless commerpop (pop culture) have any redeeming features?

Go to a supermarket and see all the garbage (celebrity gossip) rags on the magazine rack. And then watch how little by little ordinary people begin emulating the thoroughly mucked-up showbiz crowd.

Madumma (although she ain't dumb) did a video way back wakling down the street, singing and holding a paper cup of coffee and millions world-wide ran out to drink coffee out of those silly brown paper cups you now see everywhere. Coffee out of a real cup at a café or at home is far more enjoyable than walking about with a paper one, but the paper-cup makers are having a field day.

A major part of commerpop nonsense is the slob chic -- people actually paying good money to buy brand-new jeans that are tattered, faded, stained and have holes at the knees. Or young actors at Academy Awards presentations who hadn't shaved in 5 - 10 days, and soon imitators world-wide go about looking like slum dwellers or homeless street scum.

Many more examples could be cited but the workings of commerpop can be summed up quite simply: it not only gets rich by exploiting the gullible but actually makes fools of them by getting them to fall for idiotic passing fads and crazes.

one party is trusted with the economy

So according to you, PO's have demonstrated their budgetary trustworthiness by upping PiS' ante to 500 zł for every child?
They had 8 years to come up with such a plan so that Poladn wouldn't be the only major country without one and only just now they have seen the light?!

So like Delph you support PO's do-PiS-one-better 500 zł for every kid programme? Wasn't that a true Platformer brain-storm, prudent, well-considered, forward-looking and budget-sensitive?

By the way, does Roger has the day off from your B.B. tag-team today? Who's on tomorrow?

What tarnished image

You know how polls work. A joke went round during martial law that a ZOMO went up to a pedestrian and asked: are you for martial law or do you prefer to be shot. He said he was for martial law and that's all the regime-controlled TV showed.

Ask the average man in the street (not a trough-defending marcher) what he thinks of the whole busienss and some will tap their foreheads, others will say something like "dupki" or just wink. Many woman will say things like. "Lepiej, żeby się zajęli domem i rodziną niż szumieć na ulicy (Google Translate recommended)."

foreign businesses

Those trying to show how many indigenous Polish enterprises are successful really have to scrape the bottom of the barrel to eventually come up with this odd millionaire, some stray Polish company or even a foreign assembly plant (eg VW) employing Poles. But answer this simple query: HOW MANY POLISH PRODUCTS AND BRANDS RING A BELL TO THE PEOPLE OF GLASGOW, NANCY, BOSTON, NAPLES, WINNIPEG, BOGOTA, SEOUL or ANKARA?

endless

You've modified your rhetoric. Used to be "endless (apparently your favourite ajetcive) ex-PZPR types in PiS", except you could get beyond Piotrowicz and realised that 30 of PO's MPs are ex-commies or SB snitches.

Re flop-flopping, the reality is that PiS are ever-sensitive to and in sync with the heartbeat of the nation and strive to adjust their measures to public requirements.

How is it that you have entirely ignored an extreme, shameful and flagrant example of cynical flip-flopping by PO. They were againt 500+ because, they claimed, it would break the budget. But, knowing the measure enjoys widepsread popular support and contribtued to PiS' election victory, they are now calling for 500 zł for every child, not just the second and subsequent ones. To shore up their sagging popularity they have suddenly made an about face, ignoring budgetary concerns for the sake of cheap popularity.

Polish nation is serving PiS

Wrong! PiS serve the entire Polish nation with the exception of the shady arrangement types (układy), nomenklatura beneficiaries and other trough defenders, the PO-Petru gang and other lackeys of foreign corporate interests, the Brussels Eurocracy and Frau Merkel-land. Do you count yourself amongst the latter? In other words: R U 1 2?

ridiculously high salaries

And the PO regime voluntarily opted for ridiculously low salaries and switched from BMWs to Škoda Octavias pro bono and rewarded their donkey boys with pats on the back and words of encouragement. The difference is that the main beneficiaries of PO were foreign corporate inerests, the Brussels bureacracy, Heil Merkel-land and post-nomenklatura types. PiS are serving the Polish nation.

Vive la différence!

Nitpickery here, fault-finding there, anti-government rabble-rousing somewhere else plus constant efforts to keep Poland down -- that seems to be your permanent MO. One can't help but ask: How does it feel to be an alien, meddling outsider and unwelcome intruder constantly badmouthing the country that feeds him?

will the new Polish govt re build Poland?

We don't know and can only hope. What we do know that there are many forces (EU, Western corporations and their Polish lobbyists) at work who want Poland to remain a raw materials and farm produce exporter as well as a cheap manpower country to site foreign assembly plants in. And there are anti-Polish on PF who say things like "Polish cars were crappy" so Poland shouldn't try to build them. Hopefully Dep. PM Morawiecki will finally start moving Poland in the direction of creating a viable industrial base focusing on indigenous Polish designs, recognisable Polish brands, manufacturing and marketing.

Pol3 always says

The govt should do everything possible (massive education, traineeships abroad, incentives) to finally dynamaically promote home-grown Polish enetrepreneurship to create major Polish corporations and retail chains capable of competing with the foreign biggies. That way Poles would be provided with all the benefits you mentioned (goods and services, jobs) but with one difference: THE PROFITS WOULD STAY IN POLAND!

made it up

If I made it up, that would be a lie and true Catholics don't lie! On yesty's TVP1 7.30 news the leader of the shopkeepers' protest dissolved the demo saying agreement had been reached with the authroties. He said if nothing happened the protesters would be back.

tax will destroy Polish retailers

Predictably, you have reported a diagnosis but conveniently omitted a viable prognosis. The ever wise, prudent and socially sensitive PiS govt have moved to accommodate the retailer complaints and modify their tax plan. That is the latest story. The protest came and went. But for a blinkered, dyed-in-hte-wool PiS-basher only that story is highlihted which enables him to puruse his favourite pastime -- PiS-bashing. Delph's motto: truth, objectivity and common sense be damned!

Christianit

You make a convicning case for the value, attractiveness and endurance of Irish tradition. One question: how is it that Ireland, long known for its Catholicity, has produced such a bad track record regarding Church abuse of women and children. Yes, that happens everywhere, but the intensity seems greater in Ireland. Or was that the work of media hyenas out after a juicy story? I don't dismiss that eventualtiy -- the largely secular and even anti-Christian press would naturally jump on a society regarded as ultra-Catholic if any such abuses came to light.

through promotions and giveaways

Your brain always functions in one direction: how to aid, abet, defend and encurage the corporate bloodsuckers to outfox the Polish nation by cirucmventing the law, finding loopholes, cjhangin can sizes and extracting their maximum greedy profits to transfer to their home countries. Why not turn things round, if even as an intellectual challenge (devil's advocate and suchlike) and try to think of ways the Polish nation can deal with their foreign corporate adversaries. What can the government do to stay two steps ahead of the foreign corporoate mafiosi and nip their evil designs in the bud? The biggies are indecently filthy rich already. It's better to back the underdog.

big bosses

Always backing the biggies, the filthy rich CEOs and other executives. Never consider ways to trim them down to size?
The minimum-wage law prevents underpaying workers. Official prices would level the playing field. If someone could buy oranges at mom & pop for the same price as Tesco, he migth be better off just popping down to the corner shop rather than driving to the supermarket.

The existing anti-monopoly office should put the biggies (which you love and defend so fiercely) under close surveillance for signs of violations and clamp down accordingly. The PO regime had turned a blind eye to corproate shenanagins so the bloodsuckers had a field day in Poland.
