Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

I meant it as 'btw'. It is not a central use of the articles, more incidental. Still, good question.

He is a most intelligent boy. This is rather au fait and used mostly by school teachers in formal school reports. It is valid, yes :)

Yeah, mizeria is very good indeed. Knorr make a good sauce for it. I try to go easy on the mayo but it does give it the taste it needs :)

She takes the bait so well ;)

Yeah, croquettes are quite good (krokiety). Btw, I just want to point out that naleśniki are crepes and not pancakes. Placki?? Translated as pancakes but they are not pancakes as we know them. Maybe fried pancakes?

She most definitely can cook as she learned from her mother, an expert. It doesn't change the fact that she believes almost all the foods are foreign. So I ask again, what's Polish? You were saying sth about game birds, Monia?

Yeah, I'm game for a good night, bird :) Game birds? The ones in Scotland are good but they are in many countries. God didn't earmark them for Poland so what is Polish?

I have a Polish cookbook but almost all the recipes are foreign. My wife will confirm that.

Gołąbki is the Polish name but MANY countries eat stuffed cabbage rolls. Us Celts had cabbage before Slavs but we weren't the first either :(

That's Polish adaptation, david ;)

As my Japanese students told me, 'it's almost erection time' ;) ;)

Tusk just needs to avoid blunders and he's home and dry. Poles will make Poland, not him.

Stuffed cabbage rolls are eaten by 97% of Croatian women around the age of 25. That's more than Polish women eat it. That doesn't make it Croatian. Like most cabbage thingies, it was passed down from Asians, largely through Celts.

And off the spider scuttled ;) ;)

Bigos is Polish? Then I ask, 'Who was Jogaila?' ;) It has a German stem, I think. Bigos was doused in wine back in the day and that was a German thing.

No, Monia, I don't think that at all.

Food / Mayonnaise and ketchup in Poland [47]

Not correct, AS, but offer his opinion RIP. It is different.

Monia, I proved you wrong on the Matura thread so just leave it. Read above, I said it was Asian in origin. Read up on it. The modern version may be American but it is Asian in origin. I suggest some maturity for you.

Besides, it's not Polish so you are well off topic. Any uniquely Polish foods, Monia? Come on, give us a laugh.

Chicory is VERY different, AS. My mum used to drink it and it's a far cry from Jakob's.

Yeah, it's Kenco in the UK, Shawny. Mighty fine stuff :)

Modern day, yes.

I love offshoots of oscypek, a lovely cheese :)

Exactly! Ketchup is Asian, I have to correct you.

Sorry, AS, I thought I was in Colombia for a moment there.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

Aha, sorry, that wasn't clear. The Soviets were used to getting their own way around that time. Britain and the US were rather conciliatory, let's say. Poles had very little leeway at that time.

So Heinz is Polish and not American? Either you are provoking me or are revelling in the absurd? Ketchup is NOT a Polish food, end of. It's a food eaten in Poland but that doesn't make it Polish, does it?

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

All those in Katyń opposed communism? How do you know? Besides, that's no reason to exterminate them as they could always have attempted conversion.

Poles owe Russians understanding and vice versa. They owe each other vodka sessions with fingers up to previous governments and pathetic ideology that doesn't represent the hearts of the people.

Giving with one hand and taking more away with the other. Are you familiar with 'set a sprat to catch a mackerel', pawian? That's what PO are doing.

Makowiec is Silesian? I don't think so. I love Polish hospitality. So many good foods on the table and all you have to do is to lend a listening ear. All, he said ;) ;)

I'm a fan of beef rolls with red cabbage though not a major fan. Too many Silesians eat it over and over again to the extent to which it is boring. Fine when you are hungry :)

No, I said Heinz was American ;) ;) Ketchup is Asian, Catsup American ;) No probs, AS

Made in Poland under license from an American firm ;)

Your apologies are gratiously accepted but not needed.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Seems legit? Based on what, might I ask? Ask yourself this, why are they asking for their property now? Have a think about that for a moment. PO will get whacked if they meddle with this before the election. Warsz, I think you may be right. Marek Belka will likely sign away part of Poland to the IMF's deviously hatched plans and opaque glasses will turn transparent. Well, maybe translucent ;) ;)
