News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Where are the mohair beret brigade now, btw? Did they give up after the cross was removed? Ran out of youth to bash? PiS haven't acknowledged their undying support in their election campaign ;) ;)

emotional outbursts drain the energy - cross thing was one big emotional outburst - it doesn't mean there won't be smaller outbursts but the people now most probably feel tired visualising being again in the same situation

Surely not.For your information KGHM is the 6th copper and the 2nd silver producer in the World.Poland would be better off with few more KGHMs since KGHM provides jobs (well paid jobs since avg pay in KGHM is 9000 PLN/month) for thousends of Polish people and bilions of USD to Poland's budget. And you want to close it???You better get your head examined.

grubas - you shouldn't comment on my post after more than one beer - a typical human being after more than one beer is prone not to able to detect irony - and I pretty often use irony (you will have to probably take my word for that that the 'sure' was very much an instance of irony)

=teflcat]After your PMs to me I'm not inclined to answer your (reasonable) question.

Your silly answer only corroborates my belief that you are an idiot and moron. :):):):)

a completely fresh candidate for a suspension - well, well :)

people you really need to work on your sarcasm skills - being bluntly offensive or malicious is primitive, or isn't it?

Life / How much money did you spend today in Poland and what did you spend it on? [33]

Reminds me of the time, as a British student, I asked an American exchange student if I could borrow his rubber (eraser). He looked a little shocked, so I promised to return it after I'd used it.

hehehe - the guy must have went stupefied(in both meanings of the word ;)) (yes I admit to having edited that bit - you don't want to know what was before I changed it to stupefied :P) :) - American English and British English have more terrible (or at least on the same level) false friends than Polish and Czech

To przecież niełatwie, samemu/samej uczyć się angielskiego. = That's not easy though, to learn English all by yourself.

Language / What kind of a word is gratulacje? [7]

Mark, you better shut up sometimes - I very much doubt 'congrats' can be translated as 'powodzenia' in any circumstances (congrats are after , good luck is fore)

Yeah, you can trust gumi, I'd say.

well trust, hmm .. ok you can trust me - relying on me is something completely different :P

Poland will never crumble.

heh - based on what?? - I think you will change your mind in 2013 when your energy bill soars, fuel price soars (one of the easiest ways to raise tax), your client base shrinks by 2/3 and - Poland's debt in 2010 has grown the most in the whole EU (relative to PKB) - i very much doubt it's gonna be much (if any better) this year (I'm pretty sure that if the zloty remains week till the end of the year and beyond the debt will grow faster than the last year - in this scenario we will see a massive budget cuts next year - inlcuding LOWERING of wages in public sector (think teachers))

I tend to agree but it depends how big a dunt certain outside forces want to hit it.

the hit is already taken actually - 1. gas deal with Russia (Poland pays more than Germany - it reflects on competitiveness of whole Polish industrial sectors) will also affect internal demand (higher gas prices for everyone - less money to spend for the population) 2. European CO2 agreements (claimed to be some kind of a great achievement for Poland by Donald Tusk - yes everyobody in Europe was happy - so if we can please Europe it's such an achievement - everybody likes us, huh - it's just in Poland that the energy prices will start to rise drastically nowhere else (natural gas benchmark)) - it will cost equally every consumer and every business - some sectors like mining are very much electricity dependant (at least 1/4 for of their costs is energy bills) - will Poland be better off when the KGHM and coal mining sector close? sure

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

But will PiS really tolerate 3 years in the political wilderness? This election is their "last chance" so to speak - there's now nothing until 2014 - which would be a very long time in opposition.

it will be however very comfortable time for PiS as an oppostion - as Poland will almost inevitably crumble under another PO government for a couple of reasons which are paralell to some intrinsics of PO (the energy bills of most Poles will probably grow by a half (or even double) starting already some time in the middle of 2012) - there is gonna be chaos, and outcry around the EURO 2012 (not enough hotel rooms, no motorways to connect the hosting cities, other roads highly congested), then there is growing debt which will need even higher taxes (like 25 per cent VAT), some desperate moves (like introducing taxes on real estate based on their value (like a government body can know what is a market value of a property - it will be evident after a year or so how devastating it is and will be seen as very unjust) - businesses closing because of high energy cost (CO emission based on an natural gas benchmark)

- actually another 4 (quite doubtful if it's gonna take the whole 4 years) of PO in power means that we will be hearing of PO no more - for some people PO stands for stability (however false/illusionary the stability is - many people just fall for the illusion -and PO are just buying time) - what we're gonna have the next couple of years is something completely different to stability

so yes Jarosław Kaczyński and PiS can take next couple years as an opposition - it's a guaranteed way to eliminate PO from political scene - sure there will be some offspring - like Palikot - many poeple will also choose a soft-PiS (PJN if they survive these years - they will if they manage to get over 3 per cent and receive the state funding for their party - then they can also join forces with other small right-wing parties like Korwin-Mikke followers and Marek Jurek party for the next elections)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

if PiS win around 42 per cent votes and Palikot and PJN win just below 5 per cent then PiS is almost sure to have the parliamentary majority

But I still think there's a possibility that Kaczynski will quit (or more accurately, be pushed out) in exchange for PiS regaining some power. I just cannot see him surviving this election.

you completely miss the mood in PiS camp - in the party and among the supporters - the PiS campaign is very well thought of there, Jarosław Kaczyński seems back to his reason - so his leadership is hardly threatened - noone serious in PiS camp will be greatly disappointed if PiS will not be able to enter government - anyway PiS has what I think the most hardcore electorate (not all definitely but a high percentage (like slightly over 50 per cent - I belong there too)- for many people PiS stands for things they value a lot in politics like noone else

linking PiS to violence, which is true anyway

yes, PiS stands for violence - they all have black shirts in their closets (I do too) - they all have conspiracy ranks (the colour of your mohair beret reveals this though to the insiders :P ) - I'm just a private and as a private I'm allowed to go bare-headed in public - when our leader decides that the election results are unsatisfactory we will storm police offices by surprise and take the power - we have our people in the army too - you are all doomed you faint-hearted liberals :) heh

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

thanks to Palikot and PJN there is a possibility PiS can form their own government if they win about 40 per cent votes - what I expect is very much trouble during the election day including plenty of police interventions - because of PiS observers in electoral commisions on various levels (and the interpretation of the law PKW - National Electoral Committee has issued - I guess PiS very much disagrees with that PKW's interpretation)

a couple of weeks after the elections can be very heated

Study / Ever meet a non-Polish teacher at a Polish university? [15]

and what do you expect actually - in such an ethnically homogenous country Poland is - are Poles not able to learn in foreign languages and then pass the knowlegde in Polish -

now how do you expect foreigners to give lectures/teach in Polish universities if they don't know Polish well - it's not an easiest taks to learn Polish, I guess you would agree on that

Language / What kind of a word is gratulacje? [7]

a noun - means congratulations - I think it used very similarily as in English - gratulacje, stary! - congratulations, old lad!

the verb from gratulacje - is gratulować/pogratulować (imperfective/perfective)

gratulacje is plural of gratulacja (gratulacja in singular is hardly used though in Polish)

it is formed and declined on the same pattern as informacja

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

hehehe and PO did nothing all these 4 years but empowering 'people' heheh - and the final accord was played when they very much restricted public access to information about state issues (because they are 'strategically important') - and hmm Mr President, let him live forever had a chance to turn the new bill into Trybunał Konstytucyjny which he didn't (looks like they all meant it to conceal this and that, and other 'vulnerable' data) - btw there was a case of a public interest group who wanted details about a strogly marketed PO government programme called 'Anticoruption shield' - they went through all instances of courts in Poland and every court supported their demand - to no avail - never received any information on the project - the Government and Tusk himself just didn't wanna share and held Polish courts verdicts (actually orders) for nothing

Language / Polish filler words? [24]

Some people have an obsession with "nie?", used not as a question tag but as a filler in neuter intonation a couple of times per sentence.

it was 'co nie' in my youth times, but yes already then it tended to evolve into just 'nie'

there is 'ten' - "no i ten, no, i on wtedy, ten, no poszedł do garażu, i wyciągnął ten, tego, no - kompresor? - no coś takiego w każdym razie, takie z kablem i rurkami ;)"

'ten' is used mostly when you seek words - 'nie' tends to be used when someone speaks fast - it seems such a short stop so that the listeners can actually follow phrases and sentences - it also marks that the speaker puts some emotional emphasis on what s/he is speaking

'po prostu' is very much like 'basically' in English

Study / Ever meet a non-Polish teacher at a Polish university? [15]

1992-4 - Mr Le Tu, a Vietnamese, working for IT sciences institute of Wrocław University - he used to say 'x do krawatu' ('krawat' is a tie in Polish) - instead of 'x do kwadratu' - 'x square' (his Polish was not bad but wasn't perfect too from what I can tell) - actually I quit IT sciences after a grave misunderstanding between me and him during at the of one of the exams

just seen an election ad by Palikot - he hits Tusk pretty hard ('Poland - a green island? - Don't believe Tusk') - Palikot is gonna take a lot of votes from SLD but also a serious amount from PO

History / 1920 Battle of Warsaw - English trailer and film [55]

Only, why the movie had to be made in that horrible 3D format?

is it imposible to watch a 3D film without those funny glasses - I have seen a Russian 3D film in the ancient communist past - and seem to remember that without the glasses the picture was a bit blurry

PiS in power have an array of strategies to follow - one can be involving people as much as possible in the matters of the state on every level - I am not saying this is what PiS is likely to do (on the contrary they are quite prone to elitism and partisanship themselves) but times change and if PiS forms government maybe it's gonna happen

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

I read a salon24 post yesterday - the author said about an example from her acquaintances - a girl who graduated political scienses though she was actually brain-washed against PiS in the course of her studies - after non being able to find work for one year and the half she's now suddenly a PiS supporter - the complete media and university brain-wash confronted with not-so-bright realities suddenly fail

Other than nationalistic wierdos, these days, does ANYONE actually take PiS seriously? really?

over 30 per cent of the Polish population do

It's hilarious how socialist they are - their manifesto even mentions "The State as a common good". Straight from the PZPR guidebook on "good communism", circa 1951.

what should a state be then if not a commong good - a common evil? - a good of the few? -

Language / Help me understand Polish imperfective vs perfective verbs? [64]

In the same "context", Ziemowit, true enough, but not necessarily with the same meaning-:)

in some instances perfective and imperfective can be used interchangeably with but very subtle (if any) change in meaning - the example Ziemowit has given is a good illustration

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

900 PLN (or less) income per head in a household is what majority of Poles have (I guess) - the minimum wage quote is always gross - the curren 1380 PLN gross translates to 980 PLN net

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

there is something in lines of a housing benefit in Poland - it's a bit complicated but generally it is granted for people with low income (lower than 1200 PLN if single lower than some 900 PLN per person in a family) - the amount of the benefit is calculated depending on the average income in the 3 month prior to applying - again I have no idea if all EU nationals are eligible

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

as a Polish citizen you have to work at least 12 months of the most recent 18 montsh period to be eligible for half a year period of unemployment benefit - I have no idea what's it like for other EU nationals

Language / Help me understand Polish imperfective vs perfective verbs? [64]

heh - yeah - you should not take it too seriously though - it's not about contemplating it for months - but it takes time to get used to it in your own thinking before you can master it in practice - for some it will take considerable time for some it will just almost happen overnight

it's gonna be all right - don't worry :)

History / Resettlement after ww2 (old German houses and buildings still in Poland) [28]

are you sure it's exactly Polish culture to blame and not the communism?? - ever heard of the fate of palaces in central Poland?

two churches per village - nah - not in the areas i'm familiar with (in towns yes - and yes some protestant churches have fallen into disuse and neglect (and actual ruin) - I know one example)

And castles

destroyed castles, palaces? which castles and palaces - or did you mean neglected? - well you know communists didn't need palaces

destroyed libraries hmm and burned the books??

churches? how many churches have you seen destroyed and in what circumstances - as far as I know most if not all churches in Wrocław for example have been rebuilt after the war time destruction (and some where even less than burnt out empty shells
