Life / Doctors taking bribes in Poland [76]

are those two scenarios really so different?

Institutionalised behaviour (legitimacy), invoicing and being able to claim it off your health insurance (if you are covered.)

I have heard of people, in the far East, paying doctors when they are healthy, so when they are sick the docotor looks after them for free.

I don't know the intricacies of it or how it would work in reality but I suppose the good thing about that way is that then the onus is on the doctor to keep you healthy.

Life / Polish "Mall Girl" Culture? [125]

Prostitution is nowhere near as prevalent in Croatia as it is here.

I find that hard to believe.

And the idea of a galerianki is close to absurd.

I agree with you there, I can't imagine Croatians doing it in this way.

No, it's the age at which they do it, and the reason for it.

I know for a fact that in Lithuania this type of behaviour is much more common. Women selling sex for designer boots etc...

As for the age, you have a point.

How common is this teenagers selling sex for modern materials?
Is it sensationalism or a whole cultural phenomena?
I don't know.

It takes different forms in each country according to culture.

I agree.

Why don't you see this type of behavior in say, Croatia.

I did, I mean prostitution.

Or take our neighbors to the south, while prostitution is much more open and accepted, the phenomena of the galerianki is nowhere to be found.

So it is what they sell their bodies for that is the issue?

The Polish Forum Legion +++ is on standby for any eventuality that may not happen.
Always expecting the unexpected only to find out it is a piece of toast left in the crotch of the couch.
With slothlike reflexes they always wake up at the crack of noon ready to battle the intangible.

Off-Topic / ANYONE HEAR A STRANGE NOISE IN WARSAW....? [45]

"No one would have believed in the last years of the twentieth century that this world was being listened to keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own;

that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water.

With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter.
It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same.
No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable.

It is curious to recall some of the mental habits of those departed days.
At most terrestrial men fancied there might be other men upon Mars, perhaps inferior to themselves and ready to welcome a missionary enterprise.
Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us.

And early in the twenty-first century came the great disillusionment."

Has anyone in Warsaw come out in green blotches

I am not in Warsaw and I don't have green blotches but I could have!!!
What should I do???
Call the doctor? call the priest? the Army? call a taxidermist?
I'm in my titanium alloy panic room and I am at my wit's end.

I never wanted to be accepted by such shallow and stupid people.

Emmm... you never wanted to be excepted by teenage mall prostitutes? yeah, good for you!

most people don't understand how important these things have become for teenagers to be accepted.

Excellent point, Poland is changing fast and people want to show off unfortunately many simply can not afford to show off and some will do anything to be excepted.

But these are teenagers, insecure, stupid, shallow, goofey kids, there is not much difference between the Mall kids here and the things they do and that of other countries. After all it is all the same music, clothes, identity they use.

They are under much more pressure than I was when I was a teen, nobody had anything when I was a kid, so there was simply not that kind of pressure but I can see it through the televisions, magazines, blasted with billboards and having the "perfect life".

Life / Doctors taking bribes in Poland [76]

Reminds me of the Polish (?) joke I have heard, "The operation was a complete success but the patient is died".

It is mad in modern day Poland to have anything of the sort, I am sure most of you agree.

I didn,t find out about it...?

It's a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma!

But if someone heard the noise, they may not know they did.

If a noise in Warsaw wasn't heard by anyone, does it still mean there was a noise at all?

I think this thread is growing in importance and I agree, we must get to the bottom of this, immediately, if not sooner.

I didn,t hear it...i was just asking if anyone else did...?

Did someone else, during this period, in fact hear said noise that you want verification from a third party for? :)

Melbourne

Has that moved to Warsaw now then?:)

Work / Teaching English in Krakow -- how to find students? [52]

Hello k98_man,

You will like krakow, it's a great city.

I am a native speaker, but do not have any other credentials. I know that I can still find someone to teach just being a native speaker,

I don't think being a native teacher is enough at all.
Perhaps you could get some quilifications between now and then? T.E.L.F. is the most basic and not really worth anything, CELTA is a good one to get according to people on here, DELTA I don't know much about.

There is lots of information on this site, just use the search box, top right corner.

There are many native English speakers here teaching English with qualifications, so I would not be surprised if you would get very little money not having any qualifications.

So do a course and you can make a few quid and have a good time is my advice.

Good luck.

Life / Typical Examples of Polish Parking Entitlement (post yours) [57]

But why??

bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/sex/articles/spatial_tests.shtml

Sex ID,Spatial ability (BBC)

I really don't know how scientific these studies are, they seem to be more about statistics and tenancies rather than the scientific method.

Also I have to take in to account that men complain more while driving.

A friend of mine, who worked away from home all week, always made a special effort to be with his family on the weekends. Every Sunday morning he would take his 7 year old granddaughter out for a drive in the car for some bonding time, just he and his granddaughter.

One week in particular he came home sick, and on Sunday he was still battling a bad cold and really didn't feel up to going out for a drive at all. Luckily, his wife came to the rescue and said that she would take their granddaughter out.

When they returned, the little girl anxiously ran upstairs to see her grandfather.

"Well, did you enjoy your ride with grandma?", asked the sick grandfather.

"Oh yes, GrandPa," the little girl replied. "And do you know what? We didn't see a single dumb bastard or lousy **** head anywhere we went today!"

flawlessly executed parallel parking

Is there a translation for this in Polish? I doubt it :) :) :)

you cannot think that, seriously. And if you do, why do you think that is?

I think it is fun that you ask time means why he thinks women can't park but you do not ask me why I think women have more common courtesy and consideration for others :)

But don't worry women are good at other stuff, washing, ironing, making babies, knitting etc... :)

Life / Doctors taking bribes in Poland [76]

A Doctor treating a solicitor or lawyer for example would probably perform better for them than say a poor farmers housewife, thus a bribe may be offered and taken.

I don't think that is the case. I have very little experience with doctors but any I have had have been far from this picture you are painting. I mean you'd have to be a real dick to treat a lawyer better than a farmer's wife.

most women are pretty poor at parking cars

Are you thinking of Spatial Orientation?

I ( I will not speak on behalf of convex) am talking about common courtesy and consideration for others, which women seem to have more of here.

These are two (amongst others) things that women have not mastered yet.

Life / Proper dose of life in Poland... the harsh realities. [64]

Bulgaria is going through a huge change

I heard that Bulgaria only spent 1% of the E.U. funds allocated to it, is that true?

And Poland spent about 98%, this money goes to the new motorways etc...

Life / Doctors taking bribes in Poland [76]

Do we drive the machine paying bribes?

Good question and I would have to say Yes.
If we continue to give bribes people will continue to take them.

Do Doctors really earn enough without bribes?

Another good question, I was a teacher when I first came to Poland and I was told I was earning more than a fully qualified doctor and all I had done was a TELF course, I had gone to college in Ireland but English teaching was well paid and I had everything sorted out before I came here.

Who pays the bribes, im thinking its the poor people that are more likely to shove a few hundred zloty in the Doctors back pockets.

Sick people pay the bribes, I know it sounds obvious but you know yourself, when you are sick you will do almost anything not to be sick any more.

How integrated in the system is this corrupt procedure?

I don't know about Poland but I was amazed that it is part of the system in lithuania.
I could not believe Lithuania's attitude, I even had one (25ish year old) protest to me that if they didn't bribe, how would they know how much to pay the doctors??? Not the brightest of sparks

A friend went to a specialist in Lithuania, he is the only person in his field of expetise in the Baltic countries (there is on specialist for Poland).

I thought it was demeaning to have to pay the doctor a brown envelope. He worked his butt off to became a specialist and is so underpaid that he has to take extra money, it is insulting to everyone.

Bribes really do save lives...................................

Until there is a crack down, like in other areas of Polish day to day living, it will continue.

He's got a tiny winy ;)

It is an amazing time when people living in cities drive SUVs, I mean how much of a complete dick do you really have to be?

I have posted this a couple of times now and I promise I won't post it again until the next time.
, I just think it's great. This is from Ireland but it is appropriate for all dicks everywhere:

Most assclown parking jobs that I've seen have been perpetrated overwhelmingly by men

I second that.

It is the lack of thinking that is facinating for me, common courtsey, thinking about others in the hope that they might consider you, call it what you want. I think it is connected to Lack of Spacial Acuity in Poland.

Although I will say one thing, no matter how bad you think it is here in Poland, it is worse in Lithuania. I think in Lithuania they just walk into you to have some form of human contact before they kill themselves
