History / Kronika Wielkopolska, Kronika Słowian - Text [4]

Settlers in the Wielkopolska region - book recommendation?

Does anyone know of a good book (preferably in English) about the history of settlement in the region around Poznan after the end of the Great Northern War in 1721? Thanks!

News / Will many Poles migrate to Germany in May 2011 (after opening labor market)? [157]

Because the UK and Ireland opened their labor markets much earlier than Germany (and some other countries), most Poles who were willing to work abroad moved there. It's not astonishing that the numbers for Germany are now lower than expected. Your "Poles don't want to work in Germany" is just plain BS

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

Because we celebrate Christmas Eve. It's not a Polish thing, it's a Catholic thing.

Not only a catholic thing. Non-catholics in Austria, Germany and other places celebrate Christmas on the 24th as well.

Genealogy / Family History - Deborski family - Brodnica and Rypin Area [9]

John, born 1883 in Poland; Helen, born abt 1884 in Poland; Costek, born 1888 in Poland; Mary, born 1889 in Poland; Alice, born 1890 in Poland

In genealogy, you have to stick to historical facts or you will mess up your family tree. So, provided that they were all born in the town that is called Brodnica today, it should be:

John, born 1883 in Strasburg, Westpreußen, Deutsches Reich; Helen, born abt 1884 in Strasburg, Westpreußen, Deutsches Reich; ...

News / Polish Domination by Germany [69]

How many Polish companies are owned,or part owned by German companies. They are in Poland now on the railways, both freight and passenger pushing PKP out of the picture a little at a time.Do they have an interest in LOT?-Maybe.The German Banks and investment companies are moving in to control the money.

You want foreign investors, you want their money, but you don't want them to have any control over their investment? Sorry to disappoint you, but capitalism doesn't work that way.

Genealogy / Julianna Schlagowski and Friedrich Kornatz, Prangenau - Genealogy help [14]

Do you have link to the West Prussia census documents

The census of 1905 is available at one of the online databases of the Polish state archives, if I recall correctly. Can't remember which one, but I'll try to find out. Equally valuable is the "Gemeindelexikon für das Königreich Preußen", provinces Posen and Westpreussen, which is based on the census. Also available online at one of the Polish state archives.

The census that is interesting for you is the one of 1809, though. I have only seen parts of it floating around the web, never the complete one.

Here's the link for the Gemeindelexikon, Provinz Westpreussen: kpbc.umk.pl/dlibra/doczip?id=31688

and the main site of the state archives: archiwa.gov.pl/?CIDA=43

I stand corrected: the 1905 census is not available. Think I mixed it up with the Gemeindelexikon. Sorry for that.

Genealogy / Julianna Schlagowski and Friedrich Kornatz, Prangenau - Genealogy help [14]

the Germanic element in West Prussia was mostly restricted to cities and towns

That's incorrect. Here's a list of settlements for a start:

remus.shidler.hawaii.edu/genes/WPrussia/sitemap.htm

Check out the web site, if you are interested. It's much bigger than it appears at first glance.

Forgot: I also suggest to look at the available census records of West Prussia and other regions.

Genealogy / Julianna Schlagowski and Friedrich Kornatz, Prangenau - Genealogy help [14]

According to familysearch.org

the name of Julianna's husband was Kornath, and not Kornatz. They lived in Nieder Prangenau, Westpreussen, and had several children. Since Julianna's parents also lived in that town, I would look at the marriage records of Nieder Prangenau, Kreis Karthaus, Westpreussen. The catholic church books from 1665 to 1887 are available at the LDS, so you might be lucky.

Life / Are Polish people so chaotic and disorganized like Germans say? [89]

sascha: u arent slavic, right? so dont participate in this discussion if u dont know what i mean.

Is that discussion, Slavic style? :)

sascha: yes, so what.

You are a German, so you are automatically a Nazi, a robot without feelings, you're arrogant and you feel superior, and you are always waiting for a chance to invade your neighbors. Common "knowledge" on PF - get used to it. Much better than simply being called "disorganized", isn't it?

Life / Are Polish people so chaotic and disorganized like Germans say? [89]

Des Essientes: ...is still used by Germans, and others, to give them a feeling of superiority over Poles.

Serving exactly what purpose? Ooooooh ... I'm superior to a Pole ... ooooooh ... wank, wank, moan, moan ... ? Get my drift? The whole thing doesn't make sense (except for a handful of fascist scumbags and some trailer trash maybe).

sascha: slavic mentality is keeping the person human

As the Soviets and Serbs have proven...

sascha: arrogance of germans and their thinking of superiority is endless

Didn't you say you're a German? :)

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

MyMom: Why is it that 99,9% of Brits with any interest in WWII history

Have you ever thought about how many people worldwide are actually interested in this old stuff? I'd bet it's a tiny minority. Don't make the mistake to believe that what you see here on PF is the norm.

History / Are Poles grateful to the Russians for winning the war? [120]

Ozi Dan: The 17th.

Nope, you live in the 1930's, and you are trapped there... :)

...to despise your heritage

Unlike certain other folks, I don't have to be ultra-nationalistic to embrace my heritage.

History / Are Poles grateful to the Russians for winning the war? [120]

you come up with comments like this

Don't be silly, mate. I'm aware of the fact that the Soviets were killers, but that doesn't change what I've said. Without the USA and USSR, Germany most likely would've won the war. With dire consequences for Poland (and the rest of Europe), as we all can imagine. So what is preferable? 40 years of occupation by the Soviets and being a free country nowadays, or annihilation? Life or death?

History / Are Poles grateful to the Russians for winning the war? [120]

Without the huge (human) sacrifice of the USSR and without the massive financial support of the USA for the Soviets and Britain, Poland wouldn't exist today. Showing some appreciation would therefore be quite okay...

News / Poles are able to forgive their enemies - how noble. [68]

will Americans ever forget 9/11

Will they still moan and whinge about it 70 years from now, or will they simply move on? I tell you what has happened: everyone remembers the tragedy, but nobody is talking about "forgiving" here.

Law / How deep is the Gloom in the Poland's Economy [84]

As long as the country doesn't produce more goods that are competitive on the world market, the so-called economic success is just a big fat (political) lie, and sooner or later there will be a rude awakening, I'm afraid. Some people here deny it, but without the EU cash there would be no gloom.
