At present, prices have only fallen slightly.

No, they've gone down by as much as 20% in some sections of the market: you can't call that 'slight'!

Are they going to go down more? In some sections of the market I would expect so, and in other sections of the market there will be rises in prices. Fortunately for me, prices for what I want to buy haven't bottomed out yet, so I can wait another year or so and save up more for the deposit.

History / Do Poles really blame Britain for Poland becoming Communist after the war? [104]

Where did you get that figure? From what I'd seen it was a few hundred

Dr Mark Ostrowski, "To Return To Poland Or Not To Return" - The Dilemma Facing The Polish Armed Forces At The End Of The Second World War, angelfire.com/ok2/polisharmy specific data here

News / Amnesty to Illegal immigrants in Poland [102]

all I want is a clear, accurate source of official information

Well then you need to ask the officials who make the decisions, it's that simple.

History / Do Poles really blame Britain for Poland becoming Communist after the war? [104]

Around 50% stayed, 50% returned.

Can I ask for a source for that? As far as I know, of the 249,000 Poles in the western command forces: 114,000 joined the Polish Resettlement Corps and stayed in the UK; 86,000 returned to Poland from United Kingdom, 12,000 returned to Poland from Italy, 5,000 returned to Poland from Germany, 2,000 returned to Poland from the Middle East (total number who returned to Poland was 105,000); 8,000 disbanded without joining the PRC (includes 2,300 who settled in Italy and 1,200 in Holland); 1,000 "Recalcitrants" ineligible for PRC; 14,000 emigrated to other countries (including what had become the USSR); and 7,000 settled in France.

To the 114,000 PRC members we can add: 31,800 dependants of PRC members brought to the UK by the War Office, 2,400 "Distressed Relatives" brought to the UK (Poles married to UK Citizens), and 29,400 Polish "European Volunteer Workers"

I know, how horrible

Not really. But it would be nice if Poles could stop lying about what happened to their countrymen at the end of the war. Either that or start paying the bills for their countrymen's accommodation.

Hundreds of thousands of Polish servicemen were given British citizenship after the war and tens of thousands of their dependents were brought to the UK after the war. Why were those things done if Britain wanted shot of the Poles?

News / Poland's 'oburzeni' (indignant)? [41]

you are being an ignorant myopic fool

I wonder if you will ever manage to go through 24 hours here without insulting anybody.

But still, if Des had actually ever visited Poland, he'd know that there's a great emphasis on "what do you have papers to do?".

Hopefully he can find time to work here for a year helping the country he supposedly loves so much. You're still happy to pay for half of the cost of his flight, aren't you? I'll certainly get the other half.

Work / Native Speakers increasingly desperate? Polish and African teacher forcing down wages.. [27]

a Native Speaker being fired for listing the school's corporate clients in his CV as his own

Fairly stupid to do that. Just writing "Clients I have taught include" gets exactly the same info across.

From what I see (I've been pretty much away from the coalface for a couple of years), those teachers are exactly what is driving top-end wages up: people are noticing that with lessons one can pay almost any amount but people are learning that one tends to very get what one pays for. And the smarter teachers are adjusting their rates accordingly.

UK, Ireland / Getting the most from my hard earned money (transfer money from England to Poland) [41]

Extradition is also far from trivial, is a time consuming process and costs a lot. However, Poland still extradites people who nick a couple of chocolate bars, show a photocopy of their insurance documents, buy an arguably dodgy phone or have their house seized by the bank in order to more than repay a loan secured thereon.

Personally I would very strongly recommend never trying to fcuk around with the Polish tax office (and even less so with the cnuts who deal with VAT): just declare the income, point out that tax has already been paid in the UK and see what they say. If you don't like their answer, go see a certified tax advisor.
