Feedback / Why are there so many on here, who do not like Poland [150]

If you don't like Poland, and you live there, move, and if you just don't like Poland, because Poland and her people are better than you, just keep it to yourself.

Well, you live in Indiana? ...and you like Poland (and so do I), does this mean you MUST move??

POLAND: The GOOD and The BAD

Didn't we have this discussion a while back? Like more than a year ago? I thought you changed it then to the good, the bad and the ugly??

Law / Which currency is better for Poland and the Eurozone? Euro or Zloty? [36]

In a nutshell your money is safe. IF you decide to do precious metal investing I recommend investing in funds that track those metals rather than to buy actual gold, silver, etc. Renting safety deposit boxes adds up too you know... :)

Just FYI, gold, silver, etc. trade is MUCH riskier than any stock trades, talk to a specialist before you go down that road.

Feedback / Why are there so many on here, who do not like Poland [150]

Why are there so many on here, who do not like Poland, and of the many, many of those have never even been to Poland. If you don't have anything good to say, of Poland, and her people, don't say anything. Many here should be in a German, or Russian, or other group, since this is where there love is.

Interesting how we all seem to have such different perspectives on PF, are we really reading the same forum?? Some will say it's anti-Polish, others will say it's anti-American or anti-British, or even anti-"Polonian" or anti-"Plastic-Pole"or whatever word du-jour happens to be.

I guess we all see things the way we perceive the world? Personally I think there's a little bit of anti-everything here; in my view most "attacks" on PF are aimed at women, especially Polish women, some comments are funny but often they're just retarded. I guaran-damn-tee you there would be a lot of bloody noses if people used those type of comments while facing real people rather than computer screens. Either way, the next target is the US, not so much Americans per se but US as a nation, the political system, the culture., or the perceived lack thereof, etc., etc... The Jewish threads tend to perk up pretty often too because of the occasional heated rhetoric, and I'm just as guilty. Those are my perceptions and obviously your mileage may vary.

However, I don't sense a dislike or distaste for Poland on PF? People will often make snide and sometimes pretty ruthless comments when their "home" is being attacked. So if I hear some vile comments being made about the US I might get pretty aggressive in defending it which might be perceived as me putting down other countries, including Poland. However, overall I really don't sense any animosity toward Poland here.

Now, let me tell you about the State of Indiana, what a rat-hole that is... ;)

We must remember that this is just an online message board, that's it; a bunch of thoughts, ideas, dreams, (some wet-dreams :), misconceptions and prejudices all combined into an electronic Polish Jambalaya.

What was it Bob Marley said?
"love the life you live.
live the life you love."

Feedback / Language used here - how come this forum is all in English? [78]

You are right. I propose the name Bigots Forums instead.

I propose a dual name - Bigots Forums / Patriots Forums based on the person's inclination he/she may click on the favorite name, it'll still take you to the same page.... Try it...

Law / Which currency is better for Poland and the Eurozone? Euro or Zloty? [36]

Sorry Matt but this is simply not true, Switzerland is not reverting to any gold standard, issuing new gold coins, etc., is a totally different issue and happens in many countries. There's not enough gold in the world for a country of size to adhere to a gold standard. Noticed how you said "Gold is riding an all time high against the euro, pound and dollar at the moment" - the all time high being the keywords. I love investing in stocks which is risky yet I'd never invest in gold or other precious metals as it's even riskier. Gold might keep going up for another year or so or it might turn out to be a huge pent-up bubble, you just never know.

Law / Which currency is better for Poland and the Eurozone? Euro or Zloty? [36]

Skubus - are your savings short term or long term? If you already moved to Poland (checked your profile) and will need the money within let's say 2-3 years, then Złoy makes sense as you shouldn't be risking an emergency fund to currency fluctuation.

If you won't need the money for 3+ years I'd say diversify, use some in Euros and some in other currencies. Euro is NOT going to collapse, all the doomsday sayers here are just that, doomsday sayers. There will be a lot of friction withing the euro zone, one day they might even kick Greece and maybe a few more countries out for a while (doubt it personally) but if so it'll only strengthen the euro.

The Euro, like all the other currencies, will be going up and down but it's safe. The Swiss franc might keep rising for a while but the rise is hurting the Swiss economy and a higher unemployment will lower its value (still a few year away). The Japanese Yen's high exchange rate combined with the tsunami disaster, nuclear meltdown and the notorious jobless recovery is hurting the Japanese economy and it will put an enormous pressure on the Japanese government; they will do everything they can to lower the value of the Yen. The US dollar is way down and there are many doomsday sayers here too however, the debate in the US has now shifted from massive government spending, inflation fueling printing of new money and government takeovers of private businesses to not IF and WHEN but HOW MUCH money the government must save and how much the government's tax-revenue waste needs to be trimmed. In the long run the current crisis will be very good for the US economy and the dollar will rebound.

Don't know what kind of options your bank gives you but if you have the option of saving money in the Chinese Yuan (Communist China's "peoples' money" or RMB) I'd do so. The interest rate is fairly high due to the higher inflation BUT the exchange rate has to keep rising due to the outside world pressure on China, a double-whammy bonus. I have some money parked in a Hong Kong bank (in Hong Kong you can save money in Hong Kong dollars and/or the RMB).

However, if it's money that you really don't need right now and won't need it for a while then why are you saving it in a savings account?? Open a low cost broker account, do some research and "play" with some of your savings. It's riskier BUT it also pays off faster if you're willing to do some research. In the last 6 months alone I've made over 45% on buying and selling google (goog) and baidu (bidu) stock. You'll never become rich by saving alone, historically saving accounts give you just a tiny edge over the inflation rate. Buy some stocks you believe in, set a sell limit price and put it "on autopilot." Hope I don't come across as condescending toward you, not my intention at all.

Good luck to you.

PS. As far as your profile - "moving to poland to enjoy life and get away from this useless country"

Apparently that "useless country" or Ireland allowed you to save up some money? I think it's a pretty unfair description of an entire country, wouldn't you say?

Love / Advice on a Polish girlfriend who suddenly stopped contact. [32]

Not a woman but since they're AWOL from this thread here's my take. The fact she is a Polish woman is irrelevant, she's a woman and therefore there could be a million reasons, maybe she's overwhelmed and needs some space now, or maybe she's dealing with a family emergency back home, or maybe she has a boyfriend back home or maybe she just found a new boyfriend, or maybe her computer is down, or maybe she's not sure if she'll be coming back, the list can go on and on.

My advice, keep living your life, hope for the best while planning for the worst and if things don't work out do not treat other women badly just because you got burned. Karma is a *****... Good luck to you.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

Kielbasa is a Polish sausage. They are different from other sausage types at the grocery store. It's a shortening of Polska Kielbasa. Because the word is Polish, the implication is there.

But is it a Polish word?

Wikipedia mentions the word has Turkish origin?

"...In the United States, the form kielbasa (usually /kiːlˈbɑːsə/ or /kɪlˈbɑːsə/) is more often used and comes from the Polish kiełbasa [kʲewˈbasa] "sausage", perhaps a derivation from the Turkic kül bastï "grilled cutlet"..."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kielbasa

Here's the Urban Dictionary version. I must say I like the explanation #2. :-))

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

It would be hilarious to have Americans vote for which food they prefer. The results would be shameful for the Polish side.

Tahitian and Hawaian fish, Japanese sashimi and sushi, followed by my mom's Swedish meatballs (I know, mom should come first ;), Pakistani/Indian curry lamb, and everything inbetween. ...this week only, next week the ranking might change. :)

Life / Things we enjoyed as kids in Poland [140]

He bought it when he went to DDR, I think he bribed someone to get a chance to tag along on a company sponsored trip to this "international" destination. :)

Some 20 years ago my dad went all the way, the entire attic in the house was a huge train set, I think he had more than 100 trains, tiny road crossings with blinking lights, automatic rail switch stations, hundreds of tiny and pretty accurate models of people, cars, horses, dogs, etc., you name and it was probably there. Yeah, he bought that first train for me, riiight... ;)

About 5 years ago he donated the entire set to a children section in a Stockholm hospital, I'm not sure what they did with it.

How old were you when you left Poland?

Hadn't filled 8 yet...

I remember the Piko train set my dad brought home one day, he said it was for me but I'm not so sure, he played with it more than I did. :)

The train set looked sort of like this:
And the power controller looked exactly like this:

USA, Canada / Polish-American groups in Southern California [26]

how about South CA people? how are they like?

Love San Diego, enjoy the gas-lamp district (quarter?) and overall it's a nice city. I'm there fairly often and as DE said people are very diverse and from all walks of life. Many are "laid back" although having lived in the South it often feels like they're "reserved" or maybe even more rude than "laid back" but that's just a perception. A buddy of mine who's born and raised in San Fran told me once that if a Californian is smiling at you that means he wants to marry you, rob you or kill you. Otherwise he'll just leave you alone. LOL

One thing that I notice every time I'm there is how aggressive and mean many are when they drive. It's a totally different ball game from TX for sure, it's like a "who can be the meanest" competition. Of course, I'm generalizing here but of all the places I've been to only China, Korea and Kazakhstan have more aggressive drivers than what you see in Kalifooornia. At least that's my take, YMMV.

Life / Are people in Poland 'made' to give money to their parents? [25]

This is a weird thread, no one is "ever forced" to help out his/her parents but to me it seems to be a very natural thing to do and it has nothing to do with being from Poland or anywhere else. I know people who're helping out their parents here in the US and in Sweden and I'm sure it happens in other countries too. My dad lost part of his retirement when a company he worked for went belly up (Sweden), I've been sending money to them for some time and will be doing it as long as I can afford it. I was never pressured into it, never felt that I must do it, in fact they never asked me for any help and often protest when I do. However, they're my parents, I want to help, and I can afford it so why shouldn't I? It's common sense to me.

Life / Double decker bikes are getting popular in Poland? [18]

...is there a practical reason for them...

You know those safety flags on kids' bikes? Makes them "taller" and easier to see to other traffic. I'd imagine those double-deckers are more visible to others, wouldn't you say? Being a biker I thought you'd sympathize. Don't know how effective this safety aspect is but I want a double-decker truck to hover above everyone else on the road. :)
