Language / Advice needed for learning Polish Language [41]

Try to explain to an American why stol (table) is masculine while noga (leg) that is part of that very same table is feminine.

Here is the explanation:
- the majority of masculine nouns end in a consonant: stół
- the majority of feminine nouns end in -a: noga

The majority doesn't mean "all of them" (special explanation to AmAms).

But it gets worse. Krzeslo (chair) right next to that table is, guess what, neither. It's to. Nie ten, nie ta. It's to.

No, it doesn't get worse:
- the majority of neutral nouns end either in -o or in -e: krzesło

No wonder I had to leave Poland.

No wonder that nobody shed a tear after you.

News / Let us save Poland. Suggestions [40]

why is Poland always referred to as Poland instead of it's proper name, The Republic of Poland

I believe Poland should be properly called by the name of "Land of Mesco" or "Land of Mesico" since this country was first evoked in history under that name.

You have seriously nothing better to do with your time than to dig up dead threads?

There is ansolutely nothing wrong in digging up old threads. Such treads are old, but not "dead" at all as they have not been closed by moderators.

However, what can be reproached is the fact that you - being a frequent visitor to this forum - have not registered here yet.

Language / What do you like in Polish language? [70]

American English sounds rather painful to me, but British English sounds nice. This is probably because I started learning English in its British version, so when I heard American English for the first time, it did sound utterly strange to me.

I cannot comment on Polish (my mother tongue) because I am too much immersed in it. Thus it sounds completely neutral for me.

Czech sounds nice and - as for everyone whose mother tongue is Polish - often sounds funny. I like German with the exeption of German spoken in films where I find it strange and sort of unrealistic. Russian is undoubtedly a language which is an extremely 'musical' one.

News / Poland's young voters turning to the right - DW news [105]

Very few people in Poland would declare themselves as 'nationalist'. They would describe themselves as 'patriots', but 'patriot' and 'nationalist' sound an entirely different thing to the Polish ear.

Nationalist get less than 1% of votes in either local or national elections.

They were also campaigning with slogans like "Polen-Invasion stoppen" (Stop the Polish invasion) in East Germany

Does that mean they prefered the Bangladeshi, the Maroccan, the Libyans and the Middle Easterners in general over the Polish?

The number of Poles working in Mecklemburg-Vorpommern has increased threefold since 2013 and has now reached the level of 7600 - says Heiko Mirassa of the Greifswald Arbeitsamt. Most of them commute to the workplace in Germany from Poland, but some have decided to settle permanently in Mecklemburg-Vorpommern - adds the NDR radio station.

Study / What do Poles think of a foreign person who tries to learn Polish [47]

This Russian guy has started learning Polish few years ago

The guy is charming indeed. But the films will not be good for people learning Polish. But a native speaker will find his accent and his comment on learning Polish very amusing and friendly. The guy has a real showman personality.

What was be of interest to me is that he could nott pronounce the word 'sprzęt' properly. His use of the word "chuj" will surely make people laugh as in "moje pierwsze filmy były w chuj słabe" (I think it is a kind of 'rusicism'). He often pronounces c+i rather than ć+i, though he does this properly as well. He seems to be very fond of using the word "zajebisty" ("nagrać zajebisty film" for example).

Travel / Visiting the Polish Balitic Sea coast in the Winter [30]

Are you even Polish?

No, he is British and I swear that he has this rather annoying racist attitude towards the Polish people. Basically, he thinks of the Polish people as "Untermenschen", so you should not worry too much about him reproaching you on the aspect of "race".

Life / Poles against gay marriages. Really? [120]

you may not hear about all of them.

I doubt if you ever hear about all of them in any country, Ireland included.

when did the reporting of such cases begin in the Polish media?

As in any other cases (like, for example, hunts for witches in Europe), the trend appears in the West first and then slowly moves east. So when it is all over in the so-called "rotten" West, reports of such abuse will be still emerging in Poland

You probably will hear about cases of abuse by Polish priests at some point in the future

Not in "at some point the future". We hear about them all the time now, didn't you read my post?

Now there have already been lots of cases of such abuse by Catholic priests or monks reported in Poland

Catholic priests caught abusing little boys in Poland, or is this only happening in the degenerate western countries?

You must live far away from Poland if you don't know. And you don't follow any Polish media, right? Now there have already been lots of cases of such abuse by Catholic priests or monks reported in Poland and it seems that Poland is as 'degenerate' in this respect as other western countries.

The highest compensation announced by a court ruling and paid so far to the victim of such abuse has been one million zloty .

He may only sing: "Tu jest ILLINOIS, a nie Polska" and that would nicely reflect his position on many issues.

History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

Correct...one of the oldest cities in (actual) Poland...but not one of the oldest polish cities! Small but important difference! :)

It is worth noting that the first source giving the name of Gdańsk is recorded in Ioannes Canaparius's "Vita sancti Adalberti episcopi Pragensis (Life of St. Adalbert of Prague)" written in 999, just just two years after Adalbert's death received from the pagan hands on the territory of Old Prussia (not to confound with German Prussia). In the book, Ioannes says that Adalbert took the route along the Vistula River to reach the Baltic Sea and "urbem Gyddanyzc".

It is also worth noting that the Latinized form of the name used in the book almost perfectly mimics the contemporary Polish name GDAŃSK (GYDDANYZC) and the town itself is referred to as "urbs/urbem" (city). Although the borders of the then Polish state were only vaguely described as of the year 991 in the document called "Dagome iudex", the city of Gdańsk may be well said to have been placed within the borders of Poland drawn in this document.

UK, Ireland / British men don't really like women [137]

Isn't it too much occupied by tourists these days? A formidable spectacle of beheading a next British monarch would today have attracted crowds coming from every corner of the world - undoubtedly crowds would have been much bigger than in 1649. That would beat up Brexit!

I was being sarcastic suggesting a ban at random for no reason , get it , lighten up a bit

I was not. I really like the idea as it would have put certain things that are now obscure upfront.

Rich is not a racist, he hates all the people of the world equally.

Including himself. Amen.

The Administrator posted this FOUR years ago.........Please - avoid discussions about Jews, Muslims, Obamas, religions,

You don't want to say that Admin doesn't like Obongo because he is ... black?

I like Obongo, but I don't like the "true" Polish patriots posting here from outside Poland who keep saying they don't like "gender", but for ever choose to live in their new gender countries of the so-called "rotten" West. Look, "The Morality of Mrs. Dulska" is ever alive!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Morality_of_Mrs._Dulska

with ABUSE to agitate (throw gas on the fire)

This is the essence of the PolishForums.

It would be better to have a new warning "N" banned for No reason

It is an excellent idea that could only have been developend by someone happily restored to the country after many years of exile ...

History / Israeli wants to wipe Poland off the map! [198]

Ziemowit, with his notes on every poster here who does not conform to his thinking

Your personal problems seem to be still unresolved, Doug, and - what is more to it - you seem to experience yet another identity crisis at the age of 60 or something in not wanting to say if you are a Jew or not. Even if I make notes on every poster who does not confirm to my thinking, your overwhelming sense of intolerance towards people who do not conform to your views is more than amazing. Basically, Polish people in Poland come first in that, closely followed by the Pol-Ams posting on this forum. Next come the Christians which fact - I believe - is an echo of the policies and deeds committed by Henry VIII.

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

Not really. Hohenzollern have the black eagle as their coat of arms, while the Kashubian one is the black griffin, griffin taken after the symbol of the originally Slavic "House of Griffins" dynasty which ruled Western Pomerania for ages.

The origins of the Griffins are not clear. Most theories derive them from either local Slavic nobility or a cadet branch of the Polish house of Piasts. [Wikipedia]

This is what the Kashubians themselves say about their coat of arms:

- To nasz znak - ten czôrny juńc;
Jesz Kaszëbów nie je kùńc!
Òn to straszny juńc i lew,
Òn z Mòrlawë dobéł krew!
Hej, të Grifie w blónë lec,
Chcemë cebie w sercach miec!

And even if I cannot grasp the sense of the second verse and I don't know the word Mòrlawë, the rest of the text is very clear to a Polish speaker. And the language does not remind German at all. So why Kashubians are German, as your honorable friend said?

----------------------------------------------------
Hey, after giving it a second thought, I think I can understand the whole text except for that strange word "Mòrlawë". Here it is (and I did not use Google Translate!):

To nasz znak - ten czarny junak [?]
Jeszcze Kaszubów nie jest koniec;
On to straszny junak i lew,

On z .............. dobył krew!
Hej, ty Gryfie w błonia leć,
Chcemy ciebie w sercach mieć!

Shame on them.

The link you provided is relatively old, so the stats is not the latest ("138,000 Germans left Germany in 2015. More are expected to emigrate in 2016"). Also, it is obvious that the website has some "agenda", so it is does not seem to be a reliable source.

Unconditionally loving Germans and Germany should be mandatory

I don't know in what country you live, but here in Poland the attitudes of people towards Germany are closer to what BB describes than to what you seem to suggest. Of course, people have their reservations towards the Germans (I myself have them) and many remember family history going back to the WWII, but people are realistic and can clearly see that Germany has changed a lot since 1945.

despite its undoubted financial might Germany isn't.... liked by most Europeans (the way the UK or France or Italy or even the US is liked).

Germany's past will continue to weight on the country for many years to come despite the fact that we are now 73 years after the end of the WWII. Undoubtedly, Germany has changed very much for the better since then, but the WWII was too heavy a burden imposed on Europe for the people to easily forget about it even within the space of one hundred years. I think Germany should accept this fact and simply continue its mostly good work towards a new German mentality in a new German society, which practically means no Obermenschen or Untermenschen.

Even the WWI is still well remembered in Europe after one hundred years, although people from the so-called "rotten" West have an increasing tendency to blame the Serbian Gavrilo Princip as one of the decisive factors (while in fact he was only a spark for the fire which would have outburst sooner or later) in the outbreak of that war, possibly to take off some of the blame from the said "rotten" West.
