Real Estate / Astounded by the poor value of residential property here in Wroclaw [92]

They don't rent. They live with their parents. Simple.

Exactly, and that is what is wrong in inWroclaw's comparison; he fails to take into account this habit (stemming from pre 1990), which means that the rental market is much narrower in Poland than in any country in Western Europe

News / THE PARTYS OVER... NO MORE EUROS FOR POLAND'S ROADS [71]

if they were so incompetent
how did so much get built so quickly?

Quickly? You must be joking.. In 1990 (fall of communism), Poland had 381 km of motorways. 14 years later, they had added a grand total of...400 km (30 km/year!!), total length was 781 km. By 2010, there were still only 1560 km (just over 100 km/ year). It is only under the tremendous pressure generated by Euro 2012 that they speeded up in 2011 and 2012 with a new total of 2509 km end 2012. Compare this to the rate at which motorways were built in other countries , you will see that it is indeed very very slow!!

News / THE PARTYS OVER... NO MORE EUROS FOR POLAND'S ROADS [71]

gddkia is doing a lousy job - they produce lousy documentation - and they get charged by the building companies for this lousy documentation

The whole staff of GDDKIA should be sacked and a transparent re hiring process initiated. They are a bunch of incompetent people who have cosily coopted each other mostly pre 1990 through family/friends connections.

News / THE PARTYS OVER... NO MORE EUROS FOR POLAND'S ROADS [71]

And how come the roads down where I live in Silesia are, for the most part, quite good?......except Myslowice (dump)

Because these roads were built by the Germans before the war..

Real Estate / Astounded by the poor value of residential property here in Wroclaw [92]

In the place I came from in the UK (in Yorkshire), you can rent a newly built, nicely furnished 2 or 3 bedroom house for 2200pln. You can buy a 2 bedroom house (in a not very interesting area near the city centre) for 350,000pln.

Maybe , but the general build quality you get in the UK is very poor..

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

2. Currently, it is estimated about 600.000 Poles are staying and working in UK, sending their families back in Poland substantial financial support.

The 2 are not necessarily linked. Switzerland is not in the EU but still EU nationals have the right to come and work in the country with minimal formalities (except Romanians and Bulgarians)

Real Estate / The current property boom in Poland is a bubble [342]

Over 100% price rises followed by a 50% fall is a bubble.

The definition quoted is worthless, because it is too imprecise. As explained by other posters, it's the rate of decrease that matters

fall by 50% over 1,2, 3 years: it's was a bubble
fall by 50% over 20 years: it isn't a bubble

News / Is it true that the Polish has signed to take on the Euro in 2015? [12]

Blessing in disguise, we were turned down in 2009

Wrong, Poland refused to adopt it , for fear it would drag the country into recession. Very good decision at the time. It was helped of course by the fact that the 3 criteria were not met.

Don`t worry, they are just words... :):):):) to pacify European beaurocrats who are pressing Poland to join the club and contribute to the aid for Greece and others...

Indeed

Has Tusk scheduled a refendum of the people?

Not doable, because Poland pledged to take the euro at some point in the future (with no firm date) when it joined the EU in 2004

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

Huh, interesting... And what about tea-houses (tea shops)? After all, the British are famous for their tea :)

Right, but there are far, far fewers tea houses in London that cafés in Paris, Rome or Vienna.. And let's face it, many tea houses are fairly functional places (plastic chairs..), you do not want to linger in them like you do in a café or in a pub..

USA, Canada / Differences in How Polish People Raise a Child and How Americans Raise a Child [149]

But then my main problem with Polish parents is the baby talk and spoon feeding until a child turns ten.

Maybe the French way is the best?

It is ok to lie, cheat, steal, and corrupt as long as money is involved

I don't think that's true.. Lying in a court of justice is till a cardinal sin in the US.. And as far as the Armstrong case goes, remember it is the US anti doping agency, and not the UCI, that uncovered what was going on..

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

yes, that's an interesting one. I was raised to drink tea with milk, but since discovering the polish way (ie with lemon and no milk), I only drink that way.

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

No, that's the truth..Café culture is slowly getting a hold in the UK, especially in London and bigger cities, but it never was part of the traditional "british" culture.. It's a continental thing..IN Britain, there were pubs instead..

Work / Possibly moving to Warsaw- husband offered a job in Warsaw [21]

When I compare based on the people I know (I spent 5 years in Warsaw, after having worked 5 years in Paris and 8 years London and before Zürich currently ), my experience is that's a bit more difficult in Warsaw (doesn't apply to me , I have a Polish spouse and am of the 2nd type!)

Work / Possibly moving to Warsaw- husband offered a job in Warsaw [21]

Warsaw is a great place to live, I have lived here for a total of 11 years.

Well, that's true, but it does take time ... Warsaw is probably the least "pretty" among big cities in Poland (Krakow, Wroclaw, Gdansk.) so it's rarely love at first sight but rather fondness growing over time. Plus remember, the climate is quite dissimilar to the one in San Diego, especially at this time of year (not that much of an issue for Pip I suppose considering she comes from Canada)

UK, Ireland / Polish city that's moved to Britain [120]

doubt they'll get very far. A city trying to sue a newspaper because they disagree with an article would just be laughed out of any English court.

Last year, Socgen (French bank) sued the Daily Mail for an article the paper during the summer 2011. Not only did the paper withdraw the article and had to publish an apology, they also lost in court (English court) and had to pay unspecified damages..

Wikipedia is a good source. Why do you suggest otherwise?

See below why

It's good to have an access for such broad source of information for free, but one must be a bit critical when reading it, it might contain mistakes.

UK, Ireland / Polish city that's moved to Britain [120]

According to Wikipedia, it was the de facto capital from the end of WW2 until 1948 while Warsaw was being rebuilt

Well, first we have The Sun, then Wikipedia quoted as sources.. What next, the Pravda?

Travel / Is there a healthy expats scene in Poland? (drinks, food, golf, etc.) [143]

If you want the real expat scene try Osiedle Konstancja. It is a gated community next to the American school. It is full of people from every nation- it is just down the road from Wilanow- again only serviced by bus (as opposed to tram or metro) but it is guaranteed you will enjoy all the place has to offer.

Pb with Osiedle Konstancja , apart from the fact that it is gated (talk about ghetto!), is that it is located just after the main road linking Konstancin to Warsaw narrows down from 4 lanes to 2 lanes (one each way). That means traffic jams and long waits in the morning and the evening.. That is , unless there has been roadworks since I left Warsaw (summer 2011)..

Travel / Lublin ruined by arrival of Ryanair [33]

milky

Yes, and a bit more. Brits are fundamentally one of the most reserved and self conscious people on earth, and they need to drink to loose their inhibitions. It's not a question of lower prices/greater quantities of alcohol in Poland, you see the same antics all over the UK

Life / Poland and every aspect..... Please help me learn and understand the realities? [108]

Since bullfrog got it right with the day, but got it wrong with the year of the Polish constitution, I wonder if it could affect the ranking? ;-)

Indeed, mixed up my years. I was referring of course to modern democratic constitutions with the 3 oldest being in that order the USA (21 June 1788), Poland (3rd May 1791) and France (3rd September 1791). The UK has, at least to my knowledge, no written constitution.
