Life / Lack of Spacial Acuity in Poland [69]

it happens everywhere...try walking in the city in australia and you're likely to bump into someone who just randomly stops (generally asian) or people walking 3-4 abreast the pavement.

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

Its the less weathly areas that have been really hit, where I live most of the bars are doing fine, BUT, a lot have really accommodated the smokers -

in australia it was rumoured that some tobacco companies actually paid for some licensed venues to setup beer gardens/smoking areas...

(slightly off topic) The pub trade in the UK are about to to be hit again, the goverment are stopping all the 2 4 1 deals and happy hours in a bid to stop bing drinking...They're not stopping the supermarkets though!

so, it isnt only in australia that binge drinking is an issue...our authorities make out like we are the only country with a binge drinking problem.

Australia / Polish Culture in Melbourne, Australia [87]

Yeah I know it's the going rate, it's just funny how people think they're getting something fancy when it's just... barszcz.

hahahaha...it's fitzroy. you could sell sh1t with a fancy name there and the trendies would still be all over it.

Where are these other 'Polish' restaurants in Melbourne you speak of?

they're more eastern european hybrids:

- court jester in brunswick
- borsch, vodka, tears in windsor (a sister restaurant right next door to elsternwick cinema)
- red lemon in richmond
- polish clubs in albion and rowville

Yeah I guess... can't help but cringe at the price though having just arrived from Poland.

things are more expensive here than in poland...you can get a bottle of chopin vodka in poland for equivalent of $15-20AUD but in australia it would be $60-70AUD.

it isnt too bad a price considering what some "polish" restaurants in melbourne charge.

Speaking of pricey, I saw the restaurant 'Babka' in fitzroy is selling barszcz (beetroot soup) for $8.50! This defeats the whole purpose of the Polish expression 'tani jak barszcz' (cheap as beetroot soup) :D

i would say that this is the going rate for soup, especially in fitzroy.

Food / Burgers, why not in Poland? [54]

Why does anyone want to eat burgers of any sort?

the meat, the melted cheese, the egg, the bacon, the tomato, shredded lettuce eith ketcup in a slightly toasted roll are just too delicious to pass up.

Australia / NEW POLISH CAFE IN BRUNSWICK, MELBOURNE!- court jester cafe [16]

i am quite fond of the north and would ideally like to live in thornbury, preston or even reservoir...but house prices have gone crazy.

My sister lives in Werribee so I'll tell her to check this new place out.

she is better off going to the albion club in scumshine, its closer and is more traditional polish food.

Love / What to Get my Polish Guy for Valentines Day. [77]

I agree with this in a sense. Valentines has totally lost all real meaning, it has been over commercialised and the only value in it is literally monetary value. In most cases, it appears that the gift is just given becasue the person feels that this is normal. And I guess, spekaing from a female perspective, that this is mostly true of women, and not so much men, as you have just proved.

my ex didnt want something coz of the romantic side but that she had to have something to share with her female work colleagues about what they received.

History / Poland and Muslims (Tatars and others). [81]

mephias

i think you have nailed it.

i actually know a few a muslims and they are respectful of western values and society.

on the other hand, there are muslim immigrants who make no attempt to integrate.

from my experience, it seems if muslims are educated then they are in the first group, if not, then they generally fall into the second group.

News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

f*ck me, canada would even be harder to get to. good welfare system there as well?

a couple of boats recently have sabotaged themselves to ensure they get entry.

is your government tough on border security? maybe we need tips from canada if so.

News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

Yes, why did they have to come half way across the world to find a safe haven?

especially when their neighbour, india, is predominantly hindu.

Why whas the ownership of the ship they came in on disguised to hide the fact that the Tamil Tigers were the true owners? Why was there traces of explosives found on the ship and at least one of the "refugees"? Why were the refugees predominantly male? Women and children don't have reasons to leave the area? Hmmmm.

this is news to me, it hasnt been reported in australia from what i have read.

also, the 79 were living in indonesia, and from what i understand legitimate citizens. could be australia's generous welfare system was a lure?

Me thinks they should be evaluated carefully. Canada too, is on the receiving end of these "refugees". Could they really be fighters trying to play the system?

the spokesperson for the group of 79 admitted that he was running with a gang and jailed in canada for i think 2-3 years. i think he was then promptly booted from canada.

You should also probably read what a Refugee is (wiki).

in australia we have a big issue with boat people, and it is hard to get an impartial view via the media. so, im basically on the fence not knowing the facts.

my question is, how many countries did the tamils pass through to get to indonesia (also considering that india a mainly hindu country is the neighbour of sri lanka)?

and where do they get the millions of dollars to pay people smugglers? hell, if civil war broke out in australia i would struggle to gather 100k to my name.

and keep in mind there are how many people in refugee camps all over the world spending 2-3 years trying legally to start a new life.

Law / Can a student go in any other Schengen country with a Polish National Visa (D) [46]

Best bet is to contact the Polish embassy (or whoever Poland has an agreement with) in your own country and ask there.

the best bet would be going to the swedish consulate in poland and finding out.

i got my uk working holiday visa for the uk whilst in poland from the australian/british consulate in warsaw. a process that takes 3-4 weeks in australia took 3 hours.
