News / Trump will hold Poland up as an example for other nations to follow [106]

Neither. It's a simple breach of etiquette. T

It's often impossible to be polite in two systems at the same time, greeting a woman first is perfectly in line with Polish etiquette. I'm not a fan of Dudowa either but she's not at fault here.

News / Officials in Poland are hailing an upcoming visit by Donald Trump [720]

Trump's political missteps will surely cost him come the midterm election

Like all the races democrats have been losing? I'm not a Trump fan but he's not going to be impeached and his supporters are not swayed by anything that media that you like reports.

The democrats need to start running for something (that supports the interests of voters) instead of against Trump, that's a losing proposition.

the Franco-German axis

Not a good word to use in reference to any German political alliance.

Americans are so retarded

Why thank you kindly, sir. Are you that determined to alienate one of the _very_ few people on this board that doesn't wish you ill?

UK, Ireland / Question about Irish-Polish similarities [25]

there are more "lapsed" Catholics in Ireland than in Poland:

Back in the late 90s an Irish colleague (from the Dublin area) was constantly telling me that Ireland was more culturally conservative than Poland. He said his sister's first remark when she visited him was to the effect of "if these girls are catholic then why are their skirts so short?"

He also claimed that the Irish tried to appear more liberal than they were (concerning questions like divorce or premarital sex) while Poles often tried to appear more conservative than they were.

Just putting it out there...

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Its a bit of a generalization

Find a European born terrorist from a muslim background that doesn't fit that pattern. It probably works differently for immigrants and converts but the native born pattern is crystal clear to anyone who looks.

Cultural factors and cultural values that immigrants bring with them don't disappear when they immigrate and multi-culturalism means that parents can (and do) prevent their children from assimilating into the local culture. Instead of transferring the culture they end up transferring their own culture shock trauma so that the kids grow up thinking of what should become their own culture as foul and contaminated.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

They do not "fit in" with the host nation's culture but it can now be argued that they don't have to fit in

The problem is that the values of the muslim ghettos lead to failure in the mainstream of the host nation which leads to frustration and despair and nihilism that canny imams are able to use to turn them into terrorists.

The profile of European born muslim terrorists is of a peace - a youth marked by avoiding integration and education and idolizing gangster figures then in yong adulthood they realize how many opportunities they've wasted and get religion (which they've avoided previously) and the pickings are ripe for radical imams.

If they were in their own culture they'd still be failures (because mainstream muslim cultural leads to failure in the modern world) but they wouldn't have the alienation and frustration.

Apparently Trump-ish isn't translatable to other languages, translators have to be inventive with his gibberish

The same was true of Lech Wałęsa, famous for garbled nonsense, or wildly inappropriate 'jokes' masquerading as pithy political commentary.

Law / Exam for Drivers License in Poland after passing theoretical test in Germany? [7]

Quite a number of Poles know German

Not anymore. The final death knell for German in Poland was Germany's resistence to Polish labor when Poland joined the EU. Germany (with ally France) did everything it could to keep its labor markets closed to Poles while the UK threw the doors open. The UK acted likean ally, Germany didnt'. By the time Germany had to accept Polish workers.... Poles had lost interest.

Even schools in the Gdansk area have taken German out of the curriculum....

News / Thousands of teachers to lose their jobs in Poland [57]

But a plastic card or paper booklet does?

A passport (or tax bill) shows who has actual skin in the game (to use a currently popular term) who's actually thrown in their lot with the country versus the dilettantes.

News / Thousands of teachers to lose their jobs in Poland [57]

Yea I just meant like the length that's similar to the us - 8 years grade school (plus usually 1 for kindergarten) and 4 years high school.

The last I knew there was no federal system for education and different places would break up the 12 years (meant to be the same for everyone) in different ways. 4 + 4 + 4, 8 + 4 or 6 +3 +3 are the most common breakdowns. But the big difference between the US system and Europe is the traditional avoidance of tracking until after high school.

IINM the idea of the new system is to start tracking students at the high school level....

They're also planning to abolish externally-marked exams (leading to a return to the mass corruption found in the previous system)

Very bad idea for just that reason.

allow universities to conduct their own entry tests again (again, leading to mass corruption and nepotism)

Mixed mind here, pretty much all university instructors agree that the quality of incoming students started dropping (at the same time that the 'new' matura was introduced). Though that could be a coincidence (like the population drop which means universities are facing smaller numbers of students applying).

To him a knowledge of one's nation's history and culural heritage plus 4.40 zł will get you a ride on any Warsaw public-transport conveyance.

you misrepresent me, I said that those don't make you Polish (like you're not Polish except in your own very odd mind), but of course a knowledge of a country's history is an important part of education (as long as it's reasonably balanced and not just deraned PiS propaganda).

Law / Length of time to receive confirmation of Polish Citizenship [26]

The best advice for you is to sit tight and wait another 3 months, then gently remind them

Yes, Polish bureaucrats do their jobs much more to your advantage when unfailing courtesy is extended and an optimistic outlook is maintained.

Also keep in mind, that most bureaucrats do want to help but the system they work in is far too complex and byzantine to explain to outsiders (especially since the sum total doesn't make much sense).

Criticism of their performance is best kept to oneself.

Study / Young Nigerian Sets Record in Polish University [75]

You seem far more concerned about whether or not he settles in Poland

No you're fantasizing about him returning and settling here, quite apart from what he himself might want...

his fine achievement...

good grades at an iffy school.... what's the big deal?

than congratulating him

I'm not in the habit of congraluating people I've never met and will likely (99.999999 % certain) never meet in real life for 'accomplishments' that are not tremendously impressive

The one where he came top of the class!

In a country he most likely has no desire to return to! (Partly because his credentials would not make him tremendously employable in his chosen field).

We get it, you and delph have major man crushes on him. But let him get on with his life in Nigeria rather than drag him back to a country he most likely does not want to live in....

Until there's actually news that he wants to return to Poland (not a single mention of any idea like that in the article) it's all academic.

The institution he studied at in Poland is exactly the type that curious posters are discourage from attending so his job prospects (should he return to Poland) would be doubtful...

Delph and jon seem to have jungle fever for him, so let's just leave it to them....

someone who beat so many other to the top of the class will doubtless go places in his new home

The graduation was in Nigeria and there's no indication in the article linked that he wants to return to Poland. Le'ts hope he and ohters like him can help turn Nigeria from a cesspool of corruption and criminality into a developed country. He can do far more for his real home, Nigeria, than he could for Poland.

at his university here in Poland

wyższa szkoła =/= university, and congratulations to him, but I don't that particular institution is at the leading edge of Polish academics, it's like a 'tallest building in Wichita' situation.

why you seem to be so jealous of this fine young man's academic achievements

Well I looked up the institution in question and it's a wyższa szkoła.... in other words the kind of private school that dominic is constantly advising people to not come to Poland to study at.

The intellectual might of Nigerian students

If Nigerian students were really that mighty (in collective terms) then maybe Nigeria would be a nicer place to live....

Study / Young Nigerian Sets Record in Polish University [75]

Okay I'm confused.

a quote; "By the time I was writing my final examination and defending my final year project, my CGPA was already 4.79."

There is no way within the Polish sytem to bring up a 4.79 GPA to 5.0 (unless the school is using the old 6.0 'celujący' grade)

Since in Polish higher education 5.0 is generally the highest grade possible once you fall below that you can't bring it back up...

What's up here?

News / Thousands of teachers to lose their jobs in Poland [57]

And remember that the current minister of education repeatedly said that no teachers would lose their jobs as a result of the reform.

This means she was either outright openly lying or incompetent. Which is it?

Poland's PISA scores where the highest a couple of years ago and are now falling

he 2016 test was even worse

there's a trend for ya!

Language / Poles struggle with English vowels [42]

Poles struggle to get to grips with the English short 'u' and the 'aw' sound

Polish is a monocentric language with a single standard form (that almost all speakers aspire to speak). English is pluricentric with many standards (and no signs of conversion) and many speakers do not really aspire to speak the standard of their country.

There is no single English vowel system but rather a bunch of systems that only partly overlap and the distribution of vowels also differs (the apple and father vowels exist in standard American and British but the distribution differs...)

This means that most native speakers can understand someone even if the vowels are all over the place.... which means that many second language learners overestimate how successful they are in producing the vowels of any particular variety....

It's about changing the whole approach to state education and to the curriculum

Yep. The goal is to actively dumb people down to produce the kind of mindless support for the government that the PRL tried for. PiS = PRL

worldbank.org/en/news/opinion/2016/01/22/polands-education-system-leading-in-europe

Doesn't support the idea of Polish education as failing (well it probably seemed that way to the PiS core constituency of losers).

Polonia / Half-Polish Terrorist attack on the Champs-Elysses [55]

It's about someone with Polish roots who committed a terror attack in Paris.

So islamic supremacy is such a potent force for evil that it contaminates even those without much contact with the cultures it originates from.... duly noted!

You do realize this is an argument against large scale muslim immigration to Poland...
