Life / Polish people and Politeness [84]

At second time at my friend's place I heard from his mother:

Quite the trooper. Are you into whips and ballgags too?

are a really messed up basis for morality...

Nice use of a pejorative: addiction.

It describes the situation fairly well. I'm more in the no compromise camp.

The case is open on whether religion is natural.

Just had a read through, I think that the author takes too light of an approach on the need for institutionalized religion. When your brain comes across something that it can't understand, should you put a question mark on it and leave it open for further study, or should you put a concrete explanation in place which impacts other areas of the brain? I'm not so sure that the latter should be supported in any way

Lived in the South for quite some time, best years of my life... LOL

In that case, go forth and colonize the island for us. I'll send you some chaw.

But unlike breathing, religion is learned, not natural. You've just described an addiction.

I think that's a pretty fair deal, wouldn't you say?

It would be except that religious beliefs bleed over into society in a very obvious way. Why is it only off limits until it becomes an open political position?

So y'all go ahead and poke fun of Christians

Will do, just like I do with the tree worshipers. On a side note, "y'all"? Are you Hawaiian hippies stealing our red state language now?

I might say I disagree with them or with your ideology, etc.

But it's completely irrational. It's difficult for me to take something like that serious. I'm just saying, have a read through Genesis. Seriously? Really? You believe that? Wouldn't you think I was a bit odd if I believed that when people die, their souls are released into trees where they are stored waiting for new lives, people using products derived from trees will be tortured and burned for all eternity, that goes for children, your friends, all of those people that you hold dear that still decide to use wood products. That the world was created by a mighty tree on a planet far away. Would you say that person that believes in that is of sound mind? Keep it to yourself, fair enough, but what if they're wearing a tree emblem? Or protesting at paper plants? It's irrational and shouldn't be accepted by society. If something is irrational, we usually call people out on it.

I'm sorry, but I really think European people are being bombarded with these overpopulation stories for a reason.

Because of the ponzi social welfare system. Only thing is, the immigrants aren't replacing the workers, it's escalating the collapse.

I don't mind people who don't believe or people who believe in other Scriptures but I don't understand why some jump for joy over it

Because it means that people are growing up and no longer believing fairy tales. Maybe we can get past the idea of an afterlife and start living the one that we have to the fullest. I'd say that's something to be extremely happy about, as a species.

Life / Why Aren't The Shops in Poland Open on Sundays? [82]

Still, people have to eat, which reminds me that I am starving at the moment and all the stores are open in Canada.

Go to McDonalds and buy a burger. Or stop by a real restaurant and get something. Easy.

What's not easy to do in Canada is to get a beer at 2am. Very important for an alcoholic. It all takes a bit of planning, and that's every night. If the drunks can do it every night, surely consumers can do it 10 days out of the year.

Guests should respect and honor local customs not trample all over them.

Can we still go to the places that are open on Sunday, or is that just reserved for locals to trample all over tradition?

How do Poland's holidays rate against other E.U. countries?

We were looking at this a while back, Poland is pretty far down the list as far as public holidays go.

I look forward to reading your entertaining overviews of other world religions. Please do make the effort - I am rather bored today.

Come on, you know that the premise is idiotic. It's like people believing in Pinocchioism, today is the day that Geppetto was turned into a star to look down on us forever. Same level of ridiculousness, there is no reason to respect that. Polish armed forces day on the other hand, that makes a whole lot of sense.

A little thinking never hurt anyone. I don't find it an excuse, sorry.

Amen to that. Being just a bit aware of what's going on in your environment goes a long way.

Because it's a holiday, a free day for everyone.

Were Josef and Mary married? - check
Was Mary impregnated by someone other than her husband? - check
Is she brought to heaven? - check

For bonus points, there are pictures in the churches to help you out. They show little flying kids helping her on her way up into the sky. You draw your own conclusions, I came up with an unfaithful wife going to live in a sky kingdom. It's short, concise, and provides a quick overview for those of us who are just joining us.

You don`t respect people who want to relax on holidays and on Sunday and this is more important for them than your posibility of buying chips today.

Which is why I go to the people that are open on the weekends and holidays (gas stations), and shun the corner shops altogether. I'm guessing as more people start doing the same, the small shop owners will have plenty more free time. The opening hours is probably my biggest gripe. I can understand Sundays and holidays.

You really do not have to be THAT disrespectful. If you are an atheist, fine - I am one myself. But that does not give you the right to be all patronising and condescending to those of us who happen to believe in the Lady in question. I resent your attitude.

Good for you. Resent at will. That wasn't a description of what is believed?

Today is national day. We celebrate the victory in 1920 also is the day of polish army, therefore the shops are closed.

Funny, I thought that the shops being closed had more to do with this being the day that an unfaithful wife went to go live in the sky kingdom?

Real Estate / TRESPASSING ON MY LAND IN POLAND....what can i do legally...? [119]

It won't cause much damage but it stings like h*ll

It causes plenty of damage. Life time scarring for one. I don't know where in the US you're at, but back home we prefer steel pellets to rock salt when dealing with thieves.

But you ask for an answer from Polish perspective.

Just wondering, do you come from a city or the countryside? Maybe people here in Wroclaw are different, but the door is usually held open if someone is coming in behind you. Man and woman alike, except for those people that are in their own little world, which is a small minority.

You just blackmailed this poor guy. I don't see why are you happy.
The rules are the rules. It was this guy's job to execute it. He wasn't a man who invented them. It simple like that - If you don't accept the rules of WARS - don't go there. :-)

That's just head in the sand behavior. That attitude is changing as well, I know plenty of young families that would have told him where to stick it. On the other hand, there are lots of weak people that just blindly follow the rules with question. I guess that's why socialism had such a long run here. People are used to getting away with things because no one steps up to the plate and confronts them on it, thus change at the speed of molasses and reinforcement of negative behaviors.

I was only joking about bikers being scum of course....i have been one myself for most of my life...

That second part doesn't exactly reinforce the first :) Not to mention that I know myself fairly well, and I found myself agreeing with the scum comment. Might ride down to the mountains in a bit :)

In the summer this place is a great place to live , but in the winter , its just dam cold...!

complete deterioration in the quality of service

Compared to when? It seems to be getting much better once consumers realized that there are options. In the workplace, quality and leadership are more often becoming part of the metrics that employees are being judged on. Baby steps, but you wouldn't have seen that at all ten years ago.

Not sure i want bikers staying here...scum of the earth they are....!

That's true. Very true. BUT, bikers are usually self limited from stealing too much stuff...

I was thinking about people on HUBB doing cross countries.

I can only say the staff that served us in a Pizza resteraunt in Kiev , Ukraine were a wonderfull bunch of friendly people , but the reception folks in the hotel were a bit off hand...

I have this scene in Mariupol burned into my mind. Nice restaurant, nice terrace, nice food, packed to the gills, very, very, very slow service. I go to the bathroom, every last one of them glued to the TV. Every once in a while they'd take a break. The hotel staff were very nice however, even took a picture with the Panda :)

Warszawski, they are not accustomed to free thinking enough yet.

Pretty damn good at free thinking when they've got something to get out of it...
