Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

I can't say for certain, but some teacher friends have the opinion that it comes in somewhere just short of FCE.

At one time it was almost an exact copy of the FCE.

There was a time in the past when anyone with FCE didn't have to take the Matura. Then the Matura was beefed up

The Matura twenty years ago took unabridged texts from Newsweek. It wasn't easy. There was also a 400 word essay to write. There were no pictures to discuss.

The problem with the Matura is the constant changes. They don't seem to have found the correct formula

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I have been following the flood reports on youtube

Wroclaw was actually shown on the BBC News the other day.

Things in Wroclaw are not too bad compared to other parts of the country.

How firkin stupid can some people be.

Beavers make dams... dams cause floods... so let's line the riverbank and shoot all the beaver.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I know people who are trying to bring reason to all this inappropriate building. They are fighting an uphill battle.

True story:
Due to the flood of 1997 some folks in Kozanow, Wroclaw had to be rehoused. A new building was erected in a nearby area and the unwilling folks moved in. They were told not to worry.

And to paraphrase: 'a disaster like this only happens every one or two-thousand years'
Guess what happened to these folks thirteen years later.

News / Polish Policeman shoots down a foreigner in Warsaw [300]

Just tell why you think he shot to KILL.

It wouldn't matter where one is shot, if the bullet travelled along the bone and ripped a few arteries or went through multiple organs. The result would be the same. The entrance and exit wounds don't always appear in a straight line.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

Folks are now getting their feet wet in Psie Pola, where the Widawa has broken it's banks.

And also in Kozanow, which got the worst of the flood in 97.

News / Komorowski for complex-ridden Poles? [94]

Do you agree, disagree or don't care?

Much of Poland has other things to worry about at the moment.

The election is simply about left wing / right wing politics

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

In the area of Park Plaza Hotel, central Wroclaw:

I've just checked the river here. It's higher than yesterday evening, but not a threat.

I did notice a small stretch of riverbank erosion on one of the islands in the river.

It's actually difficult to find anything exciting to report.

Law / British married to a Polish woman and they have a son. Son's British Passport? [65]

here is what she wants:

It's quite simple. The mother of the child wants to change the passport for a Polish one or at least get the child out of the country.

If the mother then takes the child to Poland the father is not likely to see the child again.

The only reason the child needs a passport is to leave the country. We all know that.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

the river here is up a metre or so. i noticed that some people have moved their caravans, cars to higher ground.
the river behind the olympic stadium is now spreading across the flood plain or whatever that area is called between the dykes.
it still has to rise another 5 or 6 metres before it breaches them.
it's noticeable that the river walls are at different heights, depending where you are.
the time to panic is in the next couple of hours.
as it is i think people caught a wild fever yesterday. the shops made a killing though.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I've not long been to the bouncing bridge, near the Park Plaza Hotel.

Those who know Wroclaw will know that Wyspa Slodowa is at most two metres above normal water level. It is nowhere near being flooded.
The river is very turbulent only because of a weir near the bridge.
However, the river is higher than usual, but there is no reason to leave town

I'd say this flood is a non-event.

Of course not,

sorry for the doubt on my side.

I noticed a few folks taking pictures from one of the bridges this afternoon. it's something i expect to see more of. i'll do the same and post a couple in a day or two.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

So it looks like it will be nowhere near as bad as 97' for Wroclaw

as i said in my last post.

but it is also a fact that parts of wroclaw are already flooded.

This is the problem with rumours, they cause panic and that causes problems.

not sure if that's directed at me. it's the media that's causing the panic.

as i've seen this all before i'll check the river later and give you an update.

it is true that no sandbagging seems to be taking place in the low lying area of ostrow tumski, a place of historical importance.

a big part of wroclaw can be saved because there are valves in the dykes, which can be opened to flood the countryside. if this happens some villages will suffer to a greater or lesser extent.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

I've just been speaking to someone in the know. The wave is expected to be 40cm lower than last time. Not eight metres as has been reported.

Plus, the water defence system has been improved since then (1997)

Everybody got insurance there now Wroclaw

I can't speak for others. In this house/flat we don't expect any problems. We are on the first floor. In 1997 the flood water stopped about five metres from the house.

Much of the water doesn't come over the riverbank. I comes up through the ground. It's all sand here. The water table is very high here, even under normal circumstances.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

We have some drama here. Wroclaw is getting ready for the flood.

Some areas have already had their water cut off, others have had power cuts, some both.

Some villages are seeing water rising near their homes.

I've never seen such panic buying for water. There is no bottle water anywhere.

When I went to work the river was up a metre or so. Five hours later it was up another metre.

We will find out if it's all talk or a reality in the morning.

To add to the drama, we are expecting an eight metre wave. The flood of 1997 was a six metre wave.

UK, Ireland / British or polish Passport ' Advice feedback [47]

there are a few good points to life in the country:

no walking to school: car or school bus

smaller schools

it's possible that a teacher lives in your village, which means the pupil can't get away with much.

tip: if u move to a village never show off your wealth.

Where did you get the age five thing from?

I got it from the British Embassy in Warsaw when I asked about it for my children. This was about 15 yrs ago.

No, not at all. You can claim it whenever you want

I accept this.

I think I should have said something like it's automatic/problem free until the child is age five.

it,s just harder to obtain ' in Poland than here from what i gather .

Polish officials have the idea that u are one or the other, not both.

You should find the British Embassy in Warsaw very helpful.

You can always apply (in future) when you visit the UK.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

Huge floods all over southern Poland

in various places the Odra is divided into two channels.

in the area of work one half of the river seemed normal.

however, the other half was higher than normal and running fast.

Despite what i saw today i don't see any problems for wroclaw yet.

there is a lot of rain water causing big puddles and the ground seems to have soaked up all it can.

so far it's as one would expect with constant rain.

Genealogy / DeAmong, DeCroix - Finding a countess [15]

Yes I am sure about De Among, because the woman scientist we are trying to trace through her parents names put that name on a marriage certificate in Los Angeles in 1936.

can you post a picture of that part of the cert showing the name.

if it's handwritten we might see it differently.
