Work / A few questions for regarding EU and Poland - worker registration [8]

It is practically free, Anyone from the E.U. (that includes Britain) registering with the Wojewoda in Poland has to pay 1 zloty/22p sterling. But for a Polish person to register in England it used to cost 50 pounds sterling/219 Zloty.

Life / Bilet, controler and the Poland Police. [78]

He got caught and has to pay the fine.

It sounds to me like he freaked out and they called the police another reason could be that they did not want to take cash in case they would be accused of taking bribes.

Work / A few questions for regarding EU and Poland - worker registration [8]

Polish people are supposed to register in England, it used to cost 50 pounds. I have never heard of anyone being denied it. This may be out-dated but it is the way it worked a few years ago.

- Do English citizens have to do the same in Poland?

Foreign nationals living in Poland are supposed to register here in Poland, it is free here. I have never heard of anyone from the E.U. being denied it.

- How long until Poles wouldn't need to register any more. Will this change in the future?

If you do not register within the time frame, the WRS is not there to penalise you.

At the end of the day it is a bureaucratic process, it doesn't effect much and is more of an obligation than an enforced policy.

Generally or some? either way your a gobshite but I just want to show the class how much of a gobshite you are.
I suppose racists like you have to hold on to these false beliefs in order to prop up your BS.

UK, Ireland / Question about Irish-Polish similarities [25]

I have to agree with a lot of the similarities although one huge difference is...

There are many differences, I thought I would give the question about similarities a go :)

Ignacy Aleksander Blumer

Thanks, I had never heard about him before and I can't find anything in English about him but he is in the Polish Wiki here

UK, Ireland / Question about Irish-Polish similarities [25]

I am Irish and I live in Poland.

Irish and the Polish use a lot of the same ingredients for cooking (potatoes, cabbage, beef, etc.),

Polish food can be much heavier, I believe due to the minus 15 degree winters in Poland, Ireland has a much more temperate climate. And it's hard to get a good beef steak here.

Although our love of potatoes is a commonality.

Anyways-- I was wondering what things in both cultures are really similar? These could be proverbs, jokes, drinking toasts, slang words etc.

Although our cultures have been separate due to history and geography until very recently I do find some commonalities with the two cultures.

1. Bad history and what I think that means:

Ireland and Poland have both been directly or indirectly occupied by foreign invaders.
Communism can easily be interpreted as an occupying force and before that there was the patrician of Poland ruled by Russia, Germany and Austria.
All of Ireland was part of the British empire until 1920 and now 6 counties remain part of the United Kingdom.
What does this mean? In my honest opinion this separates us, Poles and Irish from other European countries like Germany, Britain and France because we have an "Us and them" mentality when it comes to laws, authority and rules. I could almost say a lack of respect for the authorities due to them having historically been working on behalf of a foreign force. Whereas I can't help but notice that in Germany, England and other European countries the mentality is to better their country for the people, I have met Danish people bragging about how much tax they pay for example and you would not get that in Ireland or Poland.

Also we were both poor countries, I can honestly say Ireland was much poorer than Poland during communist Poland. With poverty comes hard work and ingenuity. My how time changes things...

2. Catholicism:

Both are very Catholic countries, both had the invading forces try to subdue this religion and therefore reinforced it in the people, making it part of their very essence in a passive resistance sort of way.

The more it was outlawed the more people became Catholic.

But it doesn't just stop there,
With Catholicism comes guilt, sexual repression and ceremony this leads to a similar mentality and sense of humour. I have talked at length with people from other European countries about abortion, marriage and the stigmas attached to many things that I find comes from Catholicism, they often find Ireland backwards.

3. Alcohol

We bring the whiskey and Poland brings the wodka and you know you're sitting at the right table :)

As in do not believe in anything you should be approached with caution because you are unpredictable and can turn rabbit no time - just watch it!

Does this mean Bugs Bunny is an atheist?

Life / Any Polish channels with closed captioning? Reality TV shows? [7]

Is that tellytext or subtitles?
And which languages are you asking about?

As far as tellytext, it is here in Poland and with that I think you can put on subtitles for the hearing impaired in Polish.

And Polonia have M jak Mylasch with subtitles in English.

I am not sure if I understand what closed caption is.

Life / First hand experiences of the Mafia in Poland [28]

Hello Jay,

I understand why you asked your question but it is phrased in a way that will get a lot of macho talk from some people.

Do protection rackets exist over here at all?

They can hardly be called ''protection rackets'' but most commercial companies hire private security companies, such as Justus, on the market square, they don't cost much.

Language / Idiomatic Polish [65]

1.darowanemu koniowi w zęby się nie zagląda- don't check the teeth of the horse you got as a gift.

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is the English language version.

2. nie ruszaj gówna, bo śmierdzi- don't touch the poop because it will smell, or it smells

the above is for SeanB

Thanks.... I think....

Travel / Krakow a safe and friendly city for foreigners? Read this! [161]

All these posts built on hearsay and conjecture.

As for mysterious posters like Mirko talking complete rubbish, he is more likely southern.

There is a police station on the market square and it is impossible that the police sat idly by while tourists were being beaten on the market square.

Do bad things happen in cities? Yes.

Do we know all the facts about this incident? No.

A few of us live in and around Krakow, I personally think it is very safe but if you want a fight you could find one.

Nobody questioned why 2 guys attacked 4 yet .... perhaps we could talk ourselves into oblivion about some other details that we know nothing of and in all likelihood will never know...

History / Why did Hitler kill so many Jews in Poland? [261]

TIT: is this a serious question?

I am not suggesting an alternative history, if that is the way you are reading my question.
I just never heard of Hitler doing any of the killing himself.

Why did Hitler kill so many Jew's in Poland?

Did Hitler actually kill any Jews himself at all, I mean personally? If he did, did he kill any in Poland?

Travel / Why some travelers hate Poland? [45]

That the reality mate, don;t you know it by now?

Since everyone is just following their programming in the most predictable way possible, I thought I'd just point out what an idiot RN is, as usual :)

As for the OP, someone didn't like Poland, most people do. There will always be complainers and there will always be girls like her, posts like her's and forums like this.

I am curious if one can in fact exist without the other, there seems to be an underling co-dependency a kind of symiosis.
Even people who have no idea what they are talking about, like RN, continue to post on a Polish forums because he always gets banned from Irish forums.

And so the carousel goes round and round for all eternity....

Travel / Why some travelers hate Poland? [45]

Oh wonderful, another obscure website with one person's view, probably posted by an old member masquerading as a guest, so everyone can rally round and throw stones.

Ah and even ShellyS has posted something about here hatred for Pakistanis, that one never gets old.
RN blowing his trumpet, makes a nice change from blowing all the sailor boys I suppose.

I see people have been likened to Nazis already, a bit earlier than normal but hey, we can handle that. Jews killing Jesus (King of the Jews no less) has been thrown in as per normal.

Well don't let me stop any of you please continue. Nobody has mentioned Muslims yet?, you people really are letting yourselves down.
Come on! if youz are gonna hate go all the way, don't hold anything back.

As the carousel continues more crazy than cruel, one of us now will be king of the fools.
If it's a democracy my vote goes to you RevokeNice for your sheer crap talk.

Love / How to seduce Polish girls: Tips and advice [118]

This has to be the most close-minded, stereotypical, generalizing, illogical forum I have ever read......

I think it resembles a train wreck, it is horrid but you have to look, like a kind of morbid curiosity.
It has almost turned me right off democracy, I am not certain if some of the people on this site should have a right to vote or drive a car or even have access to the internet.

Ahhhh and I used to be so liberal...

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

Fair points mulsie,

How are Polish properties priced?

Another factor worth mentioning is how much rental return you can get on a property.
Will it pay the mortgage? Rents have dropped a bit since the credit crunch not making the market as attractive as it was, depending on when you bought.

Krakow 4,09% February 2010

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

convex: They have, the forecast is now for them to be stagnant, which makes sense considering the zloty is appreciating.

Ah, I know where you are coming from.

convex: And not stay at home with the kid? :)

No, it is a failing of making numbers out of people.

convex: Yea, same place. The mortgage and insurance on my place would be 3x the rent.

What return are you talking about?

convex: depends on how many weeks you're planning on staying.

:)

Seanus: Properties are horribly priced for the most part, I have to say. Some dingy places for 160k.

Are you talking in Euros?

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

salaries are expected to be stagnant for a good while to come.

Are they? I haven't read that, salaries have been rising slowly but quite steadily for the past four years or so.

Alright, according to your link, in Wroclaw it's 51 m2 for 306,000, seems about right (we won't even add in the 7% tax, or fees).

I believe it also takes into account that both parents work.

foreign buyers and of course a limited amount of Poles returning and cashed up

Poles sending money back to Poland has had a much greater effect than foreigners buying residential property here.

In the last five years, Polish immigrants gained 125 billion euro and transferred almost 21 billion euro to Poland.

Greedy land lords are no greedier in Poland than any where else in the world.

True and one of the contributing factors for relative stability here in Poland i.e. not a crash and recession. Is due to the banks not lending money like they were in Ireland (for example).

The stories of how the banks were throwing mortgages at people in Ireland to buy property because it was assumed that if they bought property they were investing and it would only go up in value, further inflating the bubble.

I used to criticise how inflexible the banks are here, now I see how it helped the country.

Here the banks now throw small loans at people. I am not an economist but I think this is good for the economy, if people have money they spend , circulating the money. I am not suggesting this is why the banks are doing it but I think it is a side effect of the bank's policies.

And just on a side note, there is a phenomenal amount of road works here in Krakow, and around the country, at the moment. E.U. funds being used and employing thousands of people.

It breaks down to paying 30% of your income to rent, or 70% to buy...

Are you comparing renting and buying the same place?
It is cheaper to rent but not close to that much, based on a flat in the centre of Krakow.

I have crisp $100 bill in my wallet right now, I wouldn't mind being a slum lord in Columbus.

How much rent will you charge? :X

Life / WHEN DO THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD IN POLAND? [19]

Does this not just prove that our method of timing our orbit is wrong?
And while I am at it, why the heck isn't it 10 minutes to an hour and 10 seconds to a minute?
Most other things follow the decimal system.

Like a thief in the night we are robbed of an hour.

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

4 years of 25% year on year increases is relatively stable?

That has not been the case for a while.

It did shoot up at the beginning, from about 2000 but it is not up 25% year on year these last few years.

As that other poster is saying, a dollar for a house in the states?? is that realistic?

And as for Ireland it is still a long way to Tipperary and for the prices to be in anyway realistic.
In London it is a buyer's market, if you have the cash but that was after a fairly hefty lull.

How can someone making an average salary afford to buy a place?

There are sites (like open finance Poland) that provide answers to this and it is published in the papers too.
