News / Polish minorities in Bielarus, what's going on? [7]

what is going on there?

The European Parliament today took a strong stance against Belarus' treatment of its Polish minority. MEPs today condemned recent police action and legal measures against Belarus' Union of Poles and urged Minsk to release political activists.

UK, Ireland / Help Renouncing UK Citizenship and gaining Polish one [24]

There are much easier ways to do it - move to another country and start paying taxes there. Notify the IRS of the aforementioned - done.

Really? I'm pretty sure IRS wants their taxes regardless where you are. They have a new law, that even if you succesfully give up the US citizenship, you still are subject to taxation for next 10 years. And with the new banking rules related to Patriot act, they will find the money.

Disclaimer: I have no money, just a general interest in the subject.

UK, Ireland / Help Renouncing UK Citizenship and gaining Polish one [24]

I believe that in most cases, in order to have your citizenship revoked you have to officially apply for it. I was told that 99% (?) of aplications for having your Polish citizenship stripped are denied. I don't know what disadvantages Polish citizenship has, when you're not in Poland. I know American expats give up their US citizenship so they don't have to pay US taxes.

Law / The 'Secret' of Poland's Economic Success [83]

last year Poland issued 30,000 work permits to foreign workers. I assume, that the policy is like in most other countries, these permits are issued only to positions that are unable to be filled by Poles. What jobs are they?

USA, Canada / Dual citizenship - US doesn't care if you don't give up Polish passport [103]

you supposed to give up loyalty to other countries

Yup, that what it says...
On the other hand, do the countries you 'renounce' really care? I wonder if there are any legal precendeces (except for the old case I quoted) where the dissed country uses that against the disser?

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

And guess what, because of that sensitivity of theirs, MOST Americans are respectful to Jews and Black people when they are in their company and would never dare use their ethnic backgrounds as a punching bag.

You are very wrong. Jewish and black jokes are the rage. Just about every comedian does them.

USA, Canada / Finding a job without work permission in the US [32]

And its irritating that most of employers don't even reply my emails.

The only way they will reply is if they have a job already posted. I routinely entertain myself by checking the websites of few companies I like, for new openings.

But the best way (besides somebody you know in the company giving you a call while the job opening is still only posted internally) is to contact a headhunter. They specialize in specific fields, been known to recruit abroad, and most of the time the employer pays the fee.

headhuntersdirectory.

Oh, and check out the Monster.

You're welcome.
But beware, unless you have a highly desired skill, the lack of work permit will be a show stopper.
However, if you are an expert on WAAS, for example, drop me an note. Work permit and sponsorship is not a problem at all. ;)

USA, Canada / Dual citizenship - US doesn't care if you don't give up Polish passport [103]

interesting..
One of the reasons I posted it was because I started asking all the Polish expats I know how they feel about that oath, and they all, without exception, said that they were not aware that they swore an oath renouncing their allegiance to Poland.

USA, Canada / Dual citizenship - US doesn't care if you don't give up Polish passport [103]

A bit outdated, but still, an interesting case:

Richards v. Secretary of State et al., 752 F.2d 1413 (9th Cir. 1985)
The following Court of Appeals case (one step below the Supreme Court) isn't nearly as relevant nowadays as it was in 1985, in light of the State Department's current (and much more permissive) policy on loss of US citizenship.

William Richards became a Canadian citizen in 1971. At the time he did this, the Canadian naturalization oath included a clause renouncing prior allegiances. Accordingly, a lower court concluded that Richards had lost his US citizenship.

Richards argued that he had acquired Canadian citizenship only because he

The title to this thread, which I created, was "dual citizenship". That's all, since I wanted the readers to draw their own conclusions. Why then, somebody added "US doesn't care if you don't give up your Polish passport" ??

WHY??
I would like that addition removed!

USA, Canada / Finding a job without work permission in the US [32]

I would not use your old social security number without work permit. If you can't get the work permit, I'd stick to helping out family or friends in exchange for room and board.

Also:
"After 9/11, the federal government has added extra security measures when obtaining a state identification card, driver license, and social security card among other legal documents. A new federal law (called the Real ID Act) was introduced that made it a requirement to show proof of legal immigration status in the United States to obtain a drivers license from any state."
