Real Estate / Who designs houses in Poland? [66]

and also I can't quite get having a washing machine in the bathroom.
Strange how different people perceive how a house should be constructed.

pretty practical simply - most bathrooms are all tiles (on the floor) or at least they have a general drain somewhere in the (concrete) floor (the lowest point) - if anything happens to the washing machine the water just goes down the drain - if you have to take soaked clothes out of the washing machine you just chuck'em into the bathtub

Language / How similar are Polish and Romanian languages? [75]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavic_superstratum_in_Romanian

Romanian is full of Slavic borrowings - there were even more but some were later replaced by borrowings from French and Latin

it's worth to note the the word vampire that came to English from Romanian is actually of Slavic origin - it is congate with contemporary Polish nameupiór ( and more recongizeably with Old Polish wąpiór or wąpierz)

Life / Water from wells in Warsaw - Safe to drink? [24]

you can't convince people in Częstochowa that bottled water (save for true mineral water) is better than the tap water for their tap water is really excellent (coming from deep wells and ozonated instead of chlorinated) - some cities do have excellent tap water - but those that draw the bulk of their tap water from rivers tend to have really bad water - they say tap water in Wrocław is much better now cause they use active coal filters and ozonate it now (it was really bad before) - but it's still water coming from Odra and Oława - would you drink the water from Odra???

Food / Polish-style spicy beets? [10]

I always say dont knock it till you try it.. I managed to get my hubby hooked on beets, I can hardly keep them in the
fridge.. that along with my brothers coming over to clean my fridge out.. lol.

I love beetroots - and the boiled or stewed beetroots are so good for your health (and I think actually better than pickled - though pickled beetroots surely have their merits too) - they are full of iron for example - they are excellent in detoxicating liver - you just feel better when you consume them

and as for the recipe - you should also add some water (a quarter of a drinking glass per typical pan I think) aside of oil - otherwise they will get too dry and the taste of onion will not go through the whole dish that well

Food / POLISH RECIPES! [287]

Polish seafood I never heard, please can you tell me Baltic sea fishes how many kind, and which is best one, and how polish cook fishes usualy boiled or grill or fried? And there are other seafood like calamary, mussels, octopus, shrimp in Baltic sea? Last one is there good seafood restaurant?

no shrimp - once fresh water crayfish were common as rivers and lakes were very clean and before invasive crayfish were somehow introduced (which are not that good and don't grow as big)

no calmars and octopi in Baltic, some mussels perahps but they have never been popular

the popular Baltic fish are herring, cod, plaice, sprats

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

quite funny indeed :)P

as for those forms of you - these are declinational forms - in general its the verb (to do, to see, to look for) (or the prepostion (to, from, for, with etc)) that dictate which declination form (case) should be used - it's a very broad topic and should be learned bit by bit - I think if you could learn about the cases/declinations in the German language first you will be able to have a better general idea what it's all about (the German declination is much easier / just 4 cases instead of 7 and pretty consistent) - you can get the general notion what is nominative, accusative, dative and genetive

you have declination forms of you in German too - du, dich, dir (genetive does not apply to personal pronouns - you use possesive pronouns instead - you can figure out that genetive is mostly used as indicative of possession in German - it's not that straightforward in Polish though (the genetive is used in many other circumstances)

Life / Poles - what do non-Poles just "not get" and why? [23]

gumishu:
hey tend be a nightmare of a taste (the ones that I prepared stank during frying and still did afterwards - the taste was also not a very pleasant one)

They were either rancid, low quality or both I would say. Plenty of low quality stuff about unfortunately.

they couldn't have been rancid because they were straight out of freezer - but yes they were cheap stuff

Life / Poles - what do non-Poles just "not get" and why? [23]

Poles have missed the point of British/Irish sausages and often don't like them.

Poles don't like English style sausages because they tend be a nightmare of a taste (the ones that I prepared stank during frying and still did afterwards - the taste was also not a very pleasant one) - now compare that to a German bratwurst - a bratwurst is not a thing most Poles are familiar with (though it's similar to biała kiełbasa - but biała kiełbasa is not popular in Poland at all) - still a good fried bratwurst is delicious and most Poles do enjoy it

what do not foreigners in Poland get? - Polish politics

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

spending time with a Polish family - why don't you consider playing an au-pair for a time: newaupair.com/browse_families_results.aspx?cntry=Poland%20&pg=0 you can also try to look for a Polish family here angielski.co.uk/polish_poland.htm

another option is to look for a so called gospodarstwo agroturystyczne agrotourism farm with the hosts who can speak English

tego is just a declination form of 'ten' (or 'to')

nominative: ten
accusative: ten
genetive: tego
dative: temu
instrumental: tym
locative: tym
vocative: none

ten is a demonstrative pronoun of masculine gender:
ten chłopiec = this boy Ten chłopiec jest dzisiaj pierwszy raz w szkole. This boy is in school for the first time.
tego chłopca Czy widziałeś dziś tego chłopca na placu zabaw? Have you seen this boy on the playground today?

nominative: to
accusative: to
genetive: tego
dative: temu
instrumental: tym
locative: tym
no vocative as well

to is and demonstrative pronoun of neuter gender - to dziecko - this child To dziecko jest chore. This child is ill/sick. Nie wolno nam zabierać tego dziecka na spacer bo jest przeziębione. We mustn't take this child for a walk because it has got a cold.

you can also encouter tego without a noun - Nie rób tego. Don't do it. Nie widzisz tego? Can't you see that? Nie widzisz tego, co się naokoło dzieje? Can't you see, what is going around? Posłuchaj tego. Listen to this. Nie kupuj tego. Don't buy this/it.

Love / Help me understand the different mannerisms and mentality of men in Przemysl area! [28]

without the British there the Poles would have been handed straight over to the nazis.

without the British there the Poles could have actuallly marched with Hitler on Moscow - read some Paweł Wieczorkiewicz on that matter (well you will probably have to learn Polish to read it - but well Wieczorkiewicz was a serious historian - just ask an avarage Polish historian and you wil find out)

beef rolled around sliced pickles and.....???

a piece of onion and a strip of good Polish sausage - served with their own dark sauce (I get thickened a bit) - they are cooked in a covered pot in an oven but don;t ask me how should they be kept there and what temperature (my guess is 200 degrees for more than half an hour)

boletus

the problem with you is you read everything literally - care to consider that maybe Cejrowski was using insurrection in a figurative meaning and not a bloody violent occurance - if you can't imagine this is what Cejrowski actually meant you are damned and stuck biased and prejudiced - well it's your choice - to make your day brighter i can only tell you there are millions like yourself in Poland

and yes those people who voted for Palikot are angry - they are often blinded by the hate for the Roman Catholic Church in Poland - I guess you never met such people or never read what they write on the internet - and well they are actually very easily manipulated cause they don't see more serious problems than the state sponsorship of the RCC - finally if you ask me I am against this sponsorship but first things first

Language / Fejsbuk, Jutub, Majspejs (Facebook, Youtube, MySpace) - different spelling in Polish? [7]

so I've seen these -alternative- spellings in some polish magazines I bought, and was wondering how many Poles using these sites do actually spell them phonetically in polish, or if that's how they're actually written in Poland.

fejsbuk, jutub, majspejs is just plain retarded and shows downright lazy attitudes

though I'd say their derivates written in Polish ortography are actually reasonable (na fejsie, na tubce/tjubce/tjubku)

Love / Help me understand the different mannerisms and mentality of men in Przemysl area! [28]

The only problem is I'm originally from Tehran, of middle eastern descent, and I don't know how his family would feel towards me

most Polish people are unaware of the fates of Polish people and Polish troops evacuated from Russia to Iran, so don't expect people to act on it

yes, people would be pretty much estranged by you background, your looks, probably your religion too - so you can feel pretty alienated - the language barrier will be an important obstacle - your boyfriend attitudes probably won't help you possibly quite contrary - it's because people fall into old ruts when they return to the environments they are familiar with - so don't expect an enthusiastic welcome (I don't say it's impossible but rather not to be expected) and a lot of support from your Polish guy - I can only tell you what I would do about the whole matter (the visit) - I would withdraw into myself and just be there and observe and try not stick out too much - if you somehow stick out anyway don't think much about it and don't let yourself feel embarassed - not opening your mouth that much, just smiling, showing gratitude and appreciation is actually very much approved (and to some degree expected) attitude of a female partner of a Polish man among his family (background)

Food / Polish-style spicy beets? [10]

warm cooked
beets,,

you need to add finely chopped onion and some sugar - you boil beetroots first (I guess in well salted water), then you grate'em, add chopped onion, sugar and black pepper to taste and fry it on cooking oil in a covered pan until the taste of onion permeates the whole dish (don't add too much sugar though) there should be quite a lot of onion

as for warm beetroots with horseradish - I don't know - ćwikła z chrzanem is usually served cool

I've forgotten about vinegar - you need to add some vinegar - but not really much - I would start with half a table spoon - my mom always used clear white vinegar (ocet spirytusowy - the cheapest stuff in POland) - I think aromatic vinegars will spoil the dish as it's taste is pretty subtle - maybe a plain white wine vinegar would be all right - I don't know

I've forgotten about vinegar - you need to add some vinegar - but not really much

oh, well - you could use lemon juice or citric acid instead of vinegar too - maybe it's even actually tastier then

Life / Water from wells in Warsaw - Safe to drink? [24]

I have just read an article on that well water in Warsaw - firstly it is much better for drinking and cooking than the tap water which is just full of toxic chemicals and heavily chlorinated, secondly it comes from pretty deep wells that reach the oligocene layers that are mostly well insulated from the surface (and thus are protected from contamination) - the only serious problem with the oligocene well water is that it has pretty big iron content (even up to 0.2 mg/l) - this drawback can be addressed with using various filtres

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

Also we are not used to oil fired boilers and would like for a reasonable guess what this house would cost to heat at todays rates.

Impossible to say, but such a big place will be expensive to heat with oil - I can tell you that.

what makes heating with oil so expensive in Poland is that the tax on it (paid in its price) is equal to the tax on diesel - it was thought as a necessary remedy to people selling heating oil a as a diesel substitute - the tax on heating oil was much lower before and there were even once incentives to install oil heating instead of coal heating

mcc if you actually buy the property you can consider buying a LPG tank and converting your heating to gas fired - sure it will cost you additionally but it can be the more economical solution in the longer run (and it does not involve any shoveling on your part)

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

Poland, however, gives the vote to people who have never been to Poland and whose parents and grandparents have never been to Poland. Tell me that that is defensible!

are you positively sure about that? and do you actually think those Polish-Americans who can't speak Polish really take part in the Polish elections?

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Come on, does it really matter when or where it was used? What matters is it was successfully used by PiS against PO in 2005. Today, PO is paying beautiful for fair - pięknym za nadobne. Isn`t it perfectly all right, Gumishu???? :):):):)

it was not used by PiS as an election agenda - it was dug out by mainstream media to discredit PiS - Tusk assured that his grandpa never was in Wehrmacht - then it turned out he actually was - later Tusk claimed (perhaps rightly, but how do we know) he had never know his grandpa was in Wehrmacht - what was meant to drag down PiS turned against Tusk.

PO bierze pod stołem kasę na kampanie wyborcze od Krauzego i Stokłosy, a wyborcy PO to półinteligenci.
Taki żarcik.
