News / 1.3% birth rate = Poland's slow death [221]

...instead of taking care of children and the house, maybe painting or writing novels in the meanwhile?

Painting or writing a novel while taking care of a baby or toddler? ROTFL! You've never raised a child, that's for sure.

Genealogy / Poles born under Russian control - are we Russian? [29]

There were 3 partitions of Poland. Doesn't make Polish people Russia citizens.

Are you kidding? Of course they became Russian, Austrian and Prussian/German citizens after the territory of Poland was annexed and the country disappeared from the maps. They just didn't change their ethnicity, which was Polish.

Real Estate / Cousin stole my dads home in Poland... [49]

it's very OFFENSIVE

Much like Kraut, Wog, Paki, Frog, Pom and all the other expressions that are used on PF on a regular basis, so ... just relax.

UK, Ireland / Fertile Polish Women in the UK [87]

I can't come within 10 feet of a Polish woman without her getting pregnant.

You must pay a lot of child support then... ;)

Australia / Any nice Polish people in Perth? [78]

I cannot read your post

I know that, Pawian, but why should that prevent me from responding to some of your posts? In my eyes the ignore list is just an instrument to avoid a (sometimes difficult) discussion with people who might have a different opinion, and I don't believe that this is the way how adults should deal with each other. Personally, I'm always open for a conversation, but that's of course only me... ;)

News / Why are Czechs more effective than Poles and Poland? [116]

To be fair, nonetheless, many Anglo Americans and other Anglophones do learn a second or even third, fourth, fifth, etc. language.

Yeah, I know - although in our school district for example they've scrapped almost every foreign language course. In the past Japanese, German and French were available for example, but now only Spanish (and sometimes Chinese) is left in the public school system.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

What is it? (Sorry it is so easy)

My guess: the image shows part of a hay roof.

Travel / Need a Guide to the Polish history and culture, I'm from Finland [27]

It seems that Eastern Europe gets really bad rap and a lot of it.

Yeah, I know. Google for 'Eastern Europe' and look at the maps that come up. You will see that on most of them Eastern Europe is equivalent to the area of the former Warsaw Pact; and herein lies the problem. While Poland is central Europe geographically, most people in the west who grew up during the Cold War era will automatically make the connection Poland = Warsaw Pact = Eastern Europe = pi.ss poor commies and no freedom. I understand that (some) people in Poland are not particularly happy about this negative image, but getting upset about it won't change anything at all. IMO, it will take at least another generation before things are back to normal again.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Explain please?

Let's put it this way: where I come from (Oz) many people believe that Churchill sent the ANZAC soldiers to a certain death just to save the butts of his own troops. Churchill isn't really the topic of this thread, but if you google for it there are quite a few (debatable) things for what he could be called a war criminal. Amongst them the sinking of the French fleet, the bombing of Dresden and the so-called Indian holocaust.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Given that the Anglo-Polish treaty specifically states "hostilities with a European Power", Britain would have had no obligation to do anything (as was made clear in a protocol to the treaty).

Which would mean that all this talk by Britain and France about protecting democracy and freedom was just that ... talk.
Hypocrites.

why did England declare war on Germany?

I would be interested in the *real* reason as well. Not because of Poland.

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Was it diplomatic game aimed at stopping German consolidation of Europe

Exactly. For France and the UK it was never about fighting for freedom and democracy as they claimed after the war, and it was also not about coming to the aid of Poland. The only reason why the Brits and French entered the war was that they wanted to prevent Germany from becoming a global power (and therefore competitor) again like it had been before WW1. All they cared for was their own power game; Poland was not important to them. Just ask yourself what would have happened if not Germany, but Russia would have been the first aggressor to attack Poland. Do you think a declaration of war from Britain and France would have followed? I very much doubt it.

History / The history and discussion of the Bambrzy people in Greater Poland/Posen area [25]

Polish people on this forum have a massive hang up on anything German. its 2012 not 1939.

Not necessarily "the Polish", but some members of Polish Forums. In general you are correct, though. WW2 is still a very dominant theme here on PF, together with an obsession for "the Jews", the British betrayal of Poland, the Russians, the Germans, and a handful of other topics. Depending on the thread, an unsuspecting visitor might come to the conclusion that this web site is somehow related to Stormfront or some other neo-nazi venue, and will leave with a totally wrong impression of Poland. Sad, but most likely true.

History / In WW2 Poland who was eligible to sign the Volksliste ? [48]

I am guessing she also has at least a German mother

Why do you guess? Most relevant churchbooks of the Warthegau area should be available online either at the LDS or one of the Polish state archives, so you could easily check for yourself. Start with the marriage records and go from there.

History / In WW2 Poland who was eligible to sign the Volksliste ? [48]

I'm not sure here, but I don't think it was possible for members of Volksliste Category 3 or 4 to move freely in the occupied territories or the Reich. Which means that they either allowed her to relocate because her children had a German father, or she herself had German ancestors. That's a wild guess, though.
