Love / What do foreign women think of Polish men? [120]

ZIMMY: It's formal voice (nagging, whining, accusing, etc) is feminism.

I'm beginning to suspect that your obsession with feminism colors way too much of your life.
Regardless of whether you're a man or a woman, getting things done works best if you figure out the best way to deal with the person you are faced with. Unfortunately (or fortunately for some) too many women have to do the "Oh shucks, I could not do that without you" dance, especially with insecure men, or else they would be accused of being communist lesbian feminists.

Love / What do foreign women think of Polish men? [120]

In defense of Polish men: I had one just leave after visiting for couple of weeks - to escape the frozen Chicago and advice us on some huge, I thought, house projects we were about to undertake. Within a week, all the hard to open doors and windows were fixed, the problem with the roof, which local experts insisted was an all new roof job, was pinpointed and fixed for <$50. This one would look, analyse and think of each problem a LOT before he decided on a best course of action and then the thing would magically get fixed.

All I'm saying is that to an untrained eye, it might have looked that he was not doing much of anything.
The secret is to leave them alone and not to nag.

Real Estate / How are Poland's properties priced? [51]

I'm hoping somebody will jump in with a clue...
I know that there are certain fees as a percentage of the value of the property, does anyone knows on what are they based? From what I see, it's better to go with a 'second hand' classification, but I still can't find how is the value determined.

Travel / Poland from a Persian Tourist's Perspective [269]

So then there's a big contrast between city people in Poland and those in the multicultural countries of western Europe, who learned the hard way what you get if you let in

really? Is that how you understand it?

What he really wrote:
"Warsaw seemed like a completely different world to the rest of Poland. So sum my experience up outside of the city ---- Narrowminded Village societies"

The villagers are not suspicious because they've head some experience with foreigners. Just the opposite - they are suspicious because they've never seen one.

News / Poland's pollution of the Baltic Sea [46]

First, a disclaimer: today was a rough day and my co-workers thought I needed few cocktails after getting our design practically trashed due to changing requirements. So, I'm forum-ing.

That said, I'm a tree hugger myself and I have couple of relatively trivial questions that I'm hoping somebody with the knowledge will feel like answering. May not be about Baltic in particular, but this is a first post I came upon about pollution.

1. How much food packaging is used in Poland? When you buy a loaf of bread, does it come in a plastic bag, then it gets put in another plastic bag with your other stuff? Last time I was there (and I might be dating myself), the bare loaf was handed to me over the counter. Fish deserved a piece of brown paper, nothing else.

2. There were places in my hazy travel recollections down south that stunk to high heaven with sulphur. Was that some natural occurrence, or was there some uncontrolled processing going on? (if you ask where it was, I could not tell you. I was on vacation). Is it still going on?

3. Kielce was covered in smog. If my aunt left her window open, the apartment would get covered with soot within a day. Was that some kind of a freak of nature, or an everyday occurrence?

And a happy thought: I love to travel to Costa Rica. It is heartwarming how a sound, or even sometimes seemingly silly environmental measures can enhance country's appeal. I hope Poland jumps on that bandwagon.

Love / WHY DO POLISH MEN LIE? [150]

Polish ex:
People lie for many different reasons. The way I see it, there are no guarantees in life. Sometimes you get somebody that genuinely needs just a little help and lies to cover some small indiscretions he thinks might turn you off, sometimes you get a grifter that will always tell you what you want to hear. Women like nothing more than to take a piece of coal and turn it into a diamond, but, that comes with a serious risk. If nothing else, you supposed to learn how to be a better judge of people. You really have nobody to answer to but yourself (assuming, of course, that you are not taking food out of your childrens' mouths) so do what feels right to you.

Falling in love - that's another matter. Cherish it. Fool or not, that's the best, and worst, feeling in the world. Even at its worst, at least you'll get some artistic inspiration, or maybe just get to really enjoy some blues. And keep in mind that the older, and more jaded, you get, the harder it is to come by. And in my experience, once I love somebody, I always will.

And, this is going to sound stupid, but when I'm making a decision about investing in some probably a very unworthy cause, I ask myself this question: on my dying bed, am I going to regret doing it, or am I going to regret not doing it.

That's my two cents. Tomorrow, I'll probably feel different. Good luck.

This is a nasty, nasty place.
My hope is that there are many, many more people that are reading, but have enough self control not to post. ;)

UK, Ireland / English teenager refused service at Polish shop [87]

I think anyone should be able to refuse serving teenagers, just because. And when they go whining to their parents, they be given a lecture on fine points of making a good first impression.

Love / Polish men - dont realize any of this [24]

ria1130
actually, her description sounds kinda familiar. lol.
But then, I think of another Polish man, and I see intelligent, funny, ambitious and loving man. So I don't think being Polish is what makes them who they are.

As far as all your reasons for the split, I've heard much worse, like he cheats on me, spends all his money on booze, abuses me verbally of physically... really, you could have done much worse.

UK, Ireland / No job unless you're Polish [201]

I don't use any comanies which have Indian call centres

That would be impossible to do in US. That's if you have a credit card, fly commercial airlines, own a PC, etc. etc.

Real Estate / Are the tenants responsible? - question about renting property in Poland [13]

We told the owner of the flat and she told us that in Poland the tenants are responsible for all repairs to the flat,

obviously that is not true, but keep in mind that the best tenants are those that will try an easy fix themselves before they call a landlord about something like their stuck toilet handle. If it's more complicated, some enterprizing tenants will give a landlord a call to discuss how much the repairs could be done for (who can google it faster... joke!) and whether the landlord has to fly in to supervise.

I am a landlord myself, and when considering a new tenant, I try to figure out if this is the one will be calling me in when a lighbulb in the courtyard burns out.

I'd love to get a Polish guy as a tenant. All the ones I know would go bats if they couldn't figure out how to fix something themselves. Which can also be bad, but that's another matter..

Genealogy / Coat of arms LIS - Swietopelk-Zawadzki (Fox) family name and Bochenski family name [21]

enkidu

Sometimes I like to be pretend to be a stupid Eastern european. (that was a disclaimer) This time however I really didn't understand what did you say. Pretty please?

the second part was in reference to igniting a passion for family history, history of the "clan" - my son had the US history drilled into him, but he knows very little of Polish.

I just thought one of the numerous history buffs here that keep schooling me (my "crew" lol) would comment about the importance of history, or something along the lines of pride.

That said, I have a strong suspicions that my father ordered one of those nice, wooden Coats of Arms that is hanging in his study. The old ring he has, I used to hear about from different family members, but the plaque looks new to me.

News / Polish minorities in Bielarus, what's going on? [7]

That's another subject. On one hand, I do think people should be responsible for what they're putting out there on the internet, on the other hand, who would I want to be the guardian of that gate?

On related note, FCC is working on a plan:

News / Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines [163]

I don't see how this was a simple robbery. The guy was not rich - just purchased the home from a foreclosure.
Then, two of the marines worked for him.
And, his wife was black, and sexually abused, as testified by all 4 marines.

I hope the process of recruiting and joining the military gets scrutinized. Armed Forces are increasingly used as a big welfare program.

News / Polish-American soldier and his wife murdered by four marines [163]

Pietrzak was a native of Poland who moved to New York when he was 10. He was a helicopter airframe mechanic who was deployed to Iraq.

Is the fact that "John and Miller were assigned to the same unit as Pietrzak" as surprising to anyone else as it is to me?

Wait.. about how many men are in a Marine unit?
12?
1200?
Google is not spitting out simple aswers.

Hope this helps. This should be possible over 1 week. I'm sure someone will add to this soon though.

Thanks! I'm saving this post.
