News / Newsweek's The World's Best Countries (Poland ranked 29) [128]

Now you're getting it. It's a mess. The reasons for that doesn't change the fact.

Warm and friendly people are all over the world. Bosnia has warm and friendly people, Syria, Canada, Russia...

COnvex, thank you for sharing you opinion abut Serbia and Macedonia.

You're welcome. Montenegro is awesome, same goes for Slovenia and Croatia. I thought that Bosnia was extremely well developed. The people were nice, and it felt like being in any other "western" country. I was only in the south, but I thought it was very nice. I don't know what you're getting at with the African countries. I never made any comments one way or another about the rankings.

Living off human trafficking and scrap metal can get you only so far...

Tell me about it.

Albania? Why would they be ranked here?

Might have something to do with it being a developing country with a fairly high standard of living compared to income. It sits about equal with Serbia on the HDI, even though GDP per capita is half that of it's neighbor.

The Balkans has never received the recognition it deserves after bouncing back from the civil war of 92-95

Didn't need much stoking...

What kind of recognition are you talking about? Serbia and Macedonia are a dump. Bosnia is coming along quite nicely. The coastal countries are huge tourist and investment magnets.

And remember Balkans doesn't mean Yugoslavia :) The Greeks and Bulgarians are Balkan too :)

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

Both France and UK were rolling in money, for both of them the alliance was a political tool as well hence the treason bit.

If that were the case, France would have their Maginot line and their additional armored divisions.

Where did you pick up that month?

Wow, you're right. Had to look it up. Apparently Poland and the UK were only allies for a couple of days before the war.

Why? Germany did a lot of arming towards its allies, especially Hungary.

Germany was also looking for war, the UK and France were not. And of course, Germany was selling arms, they weren't providing Hungary with any charity.

Peacefull or not Poland was the only one besides Russia who's military capacity enabled quick defeat of Germany and unlike Russia Poland would be largely dependent on the support of the Brits and Frogs hence its not only treason, its a stupid treason.

I think that you underestimate the desire not to go to war, or shift the balance of power in the East.

You mean the regions that would otherwise be taken over by Germany? A completely understandable move.

Whether it's understandable or justified is completely irrelevant. France should have declared war on the three invaders.

Given the capacity of british industry not an investement at all.

I was thinking more along the lines of the French, as they had a long standing "alliance" with Poland, whereas the British alliance was a simple political tool. France wasn't exactly rolling in the money.

arming an ally who can fight and win the war for you and spare you destruction and direct involvement is not a preferable option for you?

Regarding the Brits, I'm not quite sure how much arming they could have managed over the period of a month. And regarding arming an ally, most countries (especially at the time), want to keep expensive assets under their control. France and the UK never wanted to go to war, and Poland wasn't exactly playing peaceful neighbor. Thus all the failed diplomacy.

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

How did Hungary and Poles occupied it?

By putting troops on Czechoslovak territory in Zakarpacie and Zaolzie.

Such action wouldnt result in powerfull Poland, it would simply bolster polish offensive capabilities to a degree where war on two fronts would be implausible for Germany.

Too much of an investment. They'd be better off just keeping the weapons themselves. I think you've pointed it out a couple of times, it could have very easily been a two front war to begin with..

What justification for what war?

Justification to go to war in order to enforce the treaty of Versailles.

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

and Czechoslovakia was already under Nazi control.

Nazi, Hungarian, and Polish occupation.

We're talking pre-war, stopping Germany required concerted preparations from 1936-7 onwards, Poland had two major harbors and Gdynia was the more used one so UK would have no trouble landing equipment, it could also do so through the romanian harbor of Constanta.

But no one wanted a powerful Poland. The treaty was an attempt to box in Germany and provide justification for declaring war.

And for bonus points, France should have declared war on Germany, Hungary, and Poland for invading the Czechoslovakia. Of course that didn't happen...

What I don't understand is, if Poland sat and watched what happened at Munich in 38, why did it think that France or the UK would do anything significant to actually assist Poland? Surely the government of Poland was aware that the treaties (especially the British treaty) were just political tools.

Travel / Starbucks in Wawel Castle, Krakow. Is this a joke or true? [42]

I wouldn't even say that Starbucks coffee is fairly good to be honest. I have been in a few round the world (generally meeting people) and I have been constantly disappointed with the quality of their coffee. Really the lowest rung of the ladder in my opinion.

Ok, I'll bite. Anyone in Wroclaw know where to get better coffee than what is dished out at Starbucks?

News / Weekend of carnage as 41 people lose their lives on Poland's roads [44]

Or getting a designated driver who stays sober? In NL they now have started a total war on drink and drive, it seems from the newspapers: you now get also official fines for riding a bike drunk.

It's not only drunk drivers. Sober morons that aren't aware of their surroundings and make terrible terrible decisions. I was run off the road last week by a car that decided not to look out for motorcycles before trying to pass...

Life / Polish pride. PL stickers, flags and the white eagle! Where does our obsession come from? [79]

We have fought many battles and defended our territory on numerous occasions.

But you didn't fight anything. You're using someone else's achievements to make yourself feel good.

In peaceful times - yes. But in case of external threat - keeps us together.

If you don't have patriotism, you don't have an external threat. Granted, that's purely ideological, but hey, I can have my holding hands around a campfire fantasies.

But back to the real world, patriotism makes it easy to convince a people that "they" have been collectively wronged, and that "they" made huge sacrifices... It's one of the most amazing political tools out there.

Two Americans have now said it splits us up in times of peace but I don't see the logic here. America was a VERY proud country in the 80's AND a very cohesive country. Now you have splits over war, health and all manner of other issues. Many are ashamed to fly the flag and often 'go Canadian' on their backpacks.

Go to the US. Every single vehicle has an American flag sticker on it, or one of those little made in china plastic flags... Very cohesive how? It was just as divided under Reagan, if not more.

ROTFL. Sorry, I can't compose myself enough to answer you. I'm off to sew up my sides, laddie :)

We are talking about patriotism here and NOT nationalism which is the dislike of other nations. Think America on this one ;)

Truth is, you've never fought for Scotland. 99.9% of Poles haven't lifted a finger for Poland other than to slap a sticker on the back of their car.

Patriotism splits us up as people. Patriotism breeds artificial divisions.

no prizes for guessing what that "agenda" is.

Ok, what's the agenda for using Polish names like Nowy Jork, Londyn, and Monachium? Comeon, lets see if there's any depth to your argument here. And how else would you say Jew in German?

When you've had to fight for your country's very existence, you come through the test with pride. Scots know a thing or two about that. Poland is a nation in transition and you have to fight for the meaning of a nation in times when most are losing their sovereignty.

Please. What did any of these folks fight for? What did any living Scot fight for??

It's short man complex and it will die out soon. Nationalism is an idiotic concept.

Just because it feels good doesn't make it normal or acceptable behaviour. I would hope we would have progressed a little bit since the times of Nero, or the middle ages.

Why not? As long as it doesn't hurt others, what's your problem with it?

Merged: Kosciuszko Squadron of American volunteers during the Polish-Soviet war

Can anyone suggest a good read about the Kosciuszko Squadron of American volunteers during the Polish-Soviet war?

Are there any monuments or memorials for the Americans who went over and voluntarily risked their lives to assist Poland?

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

If you get over the idea that homosexuality in itself is immoral, you can start to actually focus on things that you see as being offensive. You know, like guys walking around topless in chaps. I think the majority of homosexuals are with you on that. If you have a problem with homosexuals showing the same level of affection as you would accept from a straight couple, you're a bigot.

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

However, they lost the moral right to own these cities and area around them when they had started the war which led to almost total destruction:

Why did they lose the moral right to Wroclaw, but not Dresden? Did Poland lose any kind of moral right to territory when they started the war in 1919?

The PRC?

Poor people though...

Yea, but they got a country out of it...took a bit of time, but definitely took advantage of it.

never. gerries became a liberal pus5ies and now they give their land to the turks in the name of the political correctness.

Right... Just out of curiosity, why are Poles "giving away" their land to Germans?
