Life / Bilet, controler and the Poland Police. [78]

Do I get this right, if you have not been caught, the ride would have been free? It is still essentially an honor system?

Travel / Stag Parties in Kraków [119]

Daytona could not handle the spring-breakers here - the locals whined and conmplained, so the spring-breakers changed the venue to Mexico. Mexico loves them and now Daytona is crying about lost revenues.

News / Russian air traffic controllers ignored communication protocol of Polish pilots? [194]

I know what he's saying... A lot of these people devoted a chunk of their lives to NOT forgive and forget. Was this really a cleansing mission? Since I don't believe any conspiracy theories in this case, if it is a sign, what is it a sign of? Should Poland keep seeking out the 1940 Katyn culprits or is it really the time to stop living in the past?

Off-Topic / Polish head of state plane crashed in middle of nowhere? [56]

It was dense fog - bad visibility.
Airport had no instrument landing systems capability (ILS), necessary to land with very poor visibility.
Pilot circled around few times, probably getting a good feel of the marker beacon signals, which give an indication where the runway is.
Pilot thought that had good altimeter settings - maybe he did, maybe he didn't. That one I would like to know.
Pilot probably planned to come in little low, so he can spot the runway sooner.
And most importantly, Pilot thought he could land the plane.
Every pilot knows that final decision is his, and his alone.

News / Russian air traffic controllers ignored communication protocol of Polish pilots? [194]

Hmm...what of interest did you pick out from those comments?

Previous incident where pilot did divert:
The President ordered PIC to land in a war zone near Tibilisi, although the
flight plan was for another safe destination.
The PIC refused, was later, after returning attacked by the President
for insubordination and pressure was made on the military to fire him.
Instead, the Minister of Defence rewarded the pilot with Medal of Honour
for bravery and maintaining his integrity and standard in face of unusual situation.

Travel / Krakow a safe and friendly city for foreigners? Read this! [161]

if you provoque it (could even be by talking in English), you will have to live with the consequences too.

Perfect!
I'll forward this to my friends that've been bugging me about taking them to see Poland. This thread should get them off my back.

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

Europe either...because not many Europeans are native english speakers actually

I've said it already - over 50% of EU people are learning english. That three times more than any other language.

And, EU, yes, I get it, but then I'll say it again, ignoring the rest of the world would be very shortsighted

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

Listen...you can do with english what you want but the topic was to make English the sole lingua franca of the EU and that's not going to happen, period! :)

I know it's hard, but you have to face it - all these languages (German, Polish, Chech..etc) are dying already - the ones that are going to matter are english, chinese and spanish.

Hey, that's a good example. Take a look at the names of the contributors for linux packages. Lots of umlauts in that lot..

see? Smart germans do it in English!

But seriously, technical documentation is a good example of why you should pay a professional translator that knows what they're doing.

That's one thing that always amazed me: in my searches for techincal documentation, app notes etc., I find more hits in Polish than in German!

Are we talking EU or not? ;)

it would be a big mistake to ignore the rest of the world.

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

Exactly since the end of WWII...before that german was the language of the science and electronics

that was long time ago. I wish that... unix, for example was invented in Germany. Even if now you do find Germans making big new strides, they're most probably working for American companies.

I think the lawn mowing industry has picked up Spanish as an official language.

obviously, you have a gardener! ;)

Not that difficult to replace a couple of words.

Yea, you can translate couple of words, but until Microsoft, and Apple, and ATnT Bell labs.. etc. etc. start doing their business in German, why bother?

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

the language most widely spoken in the EU

that is not exactly true. That might be the native speakers, but by great margin
everybody else choosing to learn English, not German.
I gave programming languages as one example, but there are many more instances, like electronic industry, that have already adopted english as an official language. And in most cases, it has nothing to do with UK.

Nothing we couldn't change if the EU adopts german

Let me ask you, and I really don't know the answer, but all the most common programming languages, are they translated from english to other languages? A simple example, can you code C++ in german?

News / Official language of EU (is not Polish) [119]

grubas

18% of Europeans speak German as their first language vs. 13% for English.

that 18% is just native speakers. Means nothing.
Much more significant statistic is what are people in EU nations learning most as a second language, and English leaves all the others in the dust -> 38%.

Or, that one: EU population speaking English - 51%, vs German: 32%.

USA, Canada / National City Bank complaint. Polish-client experience. [20]

True..
We got some 1oz platinum coins and bars when it was below $800/oz. It's a great feeling to actually hold your investment in your hand! Then came a dilemma where to hide it. I felt like a Jew before a pogrom...

I know Platinum can still go higher, the only thing I still don't understand is why it dipped so low that last time.

USA, Canada / Can Polish citizens with US greencard travel to Canada? [63]

A friend of mine with a polish passport, living in the united states with green card. He is going on a cruise from NYC to Bermuda and the Bahamas, anyone know if he should have visas?

Polish Passport and Alien Registration Card are sufficient. I travel between US and Bahamas quite often and those two documents is all you need.

As far as US citizens traveling to Bahamas without a passport - those days are long gone. Everyone needs a passport now.
