Life / Yard waste / plastic burning - is such typical behaviour in Poland legal? [30]

Gee... And some people here on PF were outraged when I said that the UK is more communist country then People's Republic of Poland ever been.

Hell, you should see the USA, the entire banking and mortgage system is socialist. Water supply is in many case's public-ally owned, unlike the UK where all water companies are private businesses.

They like to claim the same about the health system under Osama, however its basically a private system with government rules tacked on

Yeah I know that the council tax covers much more. But the only service I use is waste removal. From my point of view I pay hefty money for poor service. And I have got no other option than complain.

You don't walk the streets at night (street lighting), call the police, fire brigade, use public parks or any of their services? I find that unlikely. Most of it is spend on education for children, so get breeding.

Real Estate / Price of a flat for renovation in a tenement house for renovation in Krakow [7]

Residential construction costs in the States range from approximately $100-$200/square foot. 6000-6500/zl is approximately $250/square foot. Quite surprisingly expensive when one considers the median salaries of the two countries. Maybe I should be building in Poland?

That price is for PURCHASING the apartment, not renovating it.

Anyway, building/renovation costs for wooden/plaster houses in America are not going to be comparable to old, protected, stone buildings.

In most places in Poland, yes, but a few people get round it omehow - also there are issues of how much rubbish a household generates etc.

No, they don't get round it, they are breaking the law. My father-in-law is the head of the local council, but he still got a very large fine for burning rubbish.

One problem is that in some areas householders actually have to pay themselves for rubbish collection!! So people short of money burn their rubbish instead.

Don't you have to prove that you pay for rubbish removal? my father-in-law was prosecuted for burning rubbish and he lives 1km from the neighbours. Failure to account for rubbish removal was the evidence, the fine was big, 1000zl or more.

We were forced to pay for rubbish removal at our farm house, even though we are still waiting 9months later for the first collection.

News / Poland and Kresy being reunited? [162]

is not that simple - I have been cheated from my inheritance this way.

Oh really?

My grandfather somehow managed to go from a 19 year old miner in Karvina to a 120 hectare farmer with six employees south of Lwow.

I suspect its was something to do him being a Major in the Polish Army during the Polish Soviet war. He, like many of the settlers of the east were given land as reward for military service.

So your, inheritance, like mine was take as it was given - by force.

Crimea is practically a russian enclave?

Crimea is and always was Russian, giving it to Ukraine was a joke.

Life / Who's Leaving Poland? [138]

I've only been here a year but I have no particular reason to go back to the UK even though I can go back and forth painlessly.

So, staying.

Life / What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland? [164]

i personally find english streets lined up with identically looking houses depressing to say the least and when it comes to english food minus the ethnic cuisine...fish and chips or shepherd pie does not really make you a kitchen powerhouse, eh?

Anywhere you go in Poland, the food is the same. The lack of choice is in stark contrast with other countries such as UK, France, Spain or Italy. English food is ethnic cuisine, curry's have been eaten in Britain for hundreds of years, and its even exported to India. Vindaloo, for instance, is Portuguese - they introduced to India.

There is a demand for ethnic food in Poland, but its an an early stage comparable to the 1960's in Britain. Give it another 20 years and Poles will be eating everything.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

Yes of course its a bubble. Look at the chart here, shows the cycle of boom-bust. The frequency of property bubbles is 18 years - its happened 6 times in the US and UK and the next boom/bust will happen right on time. The same thing will happen in Poland.

Life / What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland? [164]

This is a great question.

1. cabbage on hamburgers
2. cabbage on hotdogs

3. Cabbage with everything else. Mexican food for instance.

Having lived in Krakow for a year now I have found nothing that is a culture shock (from London). The food is a bit crap, even the expensive shops sell meat or fish that has gone off. As a big fish eater its difficult..

The state of the roads and pavements is disgusting, I've twisted my ankles several times just walking. Living in London I'm used to small apartments, but here they live in every room - no living and dining rooms (not for sleeping) like the UK. Apartments are pretty well made if a little drab on the outside.

Too many ads on tv for medical stuff, waaaay too many

And a hell of a lot of Pharmacy's. I suspect its becuase self administration is better than going to the health service.

Most other things are basically the same, just in a rather complicated language.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

How can you have a recession if your country is bordering on poverty.

What an idiotic comment.

Poverty is living below a certain level of income required for existence in a country. Poland may have low wages but the number of people living below the poverty line isn't much higher than the UK and most of the poor live in three areas of Poland. There is nothing stopping the other 70% of Poland being comparatively rich and having an economic boom or recession.

And in relation to real estate, its Location,Location,Location of course so prices can go ballistic in one town and not another as poverty 100miles away is irrelevant.

Most people who work in property are thick as ****, but your assessment of the demand is spot on; there is a shortage of property and especially modern stuff in Poland. Furthermore, even in the boom there were only a relatively small amount of new property built, 170k was one figure versus the many millions built in Spain for example.

Prices will be determined by the availability of credit, but 20% fall is still a big fall.

it buys you 5.6 metres

In the most expensive place in London. 'Close to the centre' as he claimed it would give you 5 times as much space, say 30M.

You should really shut up about people who complain about the ridiculous house prices. 1million zloty for a 67meter apartment in a country where average earning are about 25k is ridiculous. My GF apartment is 67m and its worth 500K.

Thats 20 times earning. Thats a joke. Prices will fall.

News / Why are Czechs more effective than Poles and Poland? [116]

How do they manage to be so highly operational?Maybe Hitler was right calling Czechs the most dangerous Slavs?

southern

Czechoslovakia was far more industrialised than Poland at an earlier date. Industry produces money, money allows a better infrastructure, infrastructure makes a country more efficient. Poland was more agricultural and has a history of being occupied and destroyed by invaders. Czechoslovakia also inherited the wealthy of the Austro- Hungarian empire, given them a advantage in infrastructure and industry.

Britain, in contrast has not been invaded for nearly a thousand years, had access to the worlds oceans and natural resources (a legal imperative - slavery was banned) to industrialise.

In summary, Czechoslovakia was lucky.

Food / WHY IN POLAND PEOPLE DON'T USE ICE? [142]

makes food soggy

You need to use a combination microwave oven. Roasts and microwaves at the same time.

A microwave can't be used for everything but its got its uses.

Food / WHY IN POLAND PEOPLE DON'T USE ICE? [142]

Compared to the bland UK cuisine? I never heard of anybody boiling a roast until I went to England. Is it because of dental problems that you have to overcook everything?

Boiling a roast?? whats that I've lived in the UK for decades and never had it.

The quality and selection of food in American supermarkets is abysmal compared to the UK, although there are exceptions (trader Joes for example). The appalling health of Americans is largely down to the terrible diet, thats a simple statement of fact.

Uk dental problems ? riiight.. that would be because dentists in the UK allow natural variation instead of fake and ridiculous plastic smiles certain Americans seem to prefer.

Food / WHY IN POLAND PEOPLE DON'T USE ICE? [142]

Yet Americans can come out with something as ridiculous as this

Another reason why Americans consume healthier than in Poland

The American diet is un-healthy as is possible, mass processed tasteless crap, loaded with sugar and salt.

and yes, I've been there many times.

Food / WHY IN POLAND PEOPLE DON'T USE ICE? [142]

one tastes better than the other......and the winner iiiiiisss........the American one. I don't drink soda to be healthy, so when I DO drink it, I want the real deal.....the one that tastes good. simples.

Its entirely a personal opinion which is better, in your case you prefer what you are used to.

Obviously you don't drink corn syrup for its health benefits - its probably one of the major factors of American obesity.

actually these are made with real beet sugar instead of the crappy corn syrup.. the throwback pepsi and dew that are sold here right now are made with real sugar like they used to be made originally.. this sugar however is made from sugar cane

Sugar was originally made with Sugar cane, but neither it, Corn or Beet sugar is 'real'

History / The Untold Battle of Britain [205]

I think he is from OZ. Don't mind him, he is just a little grumpy aussie failure who had to resort to teaching english grammar as a career.

He's an Aussie? that explains a lot. There a sub section of of Australians who are nasty, petty minded racists with attitudes that hark back to the 1950's. Repulsive if your happen to get surrounded by them as several friends have. Put them all of Australians which is a pity because many of them are decent people.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

A scud run is essentially when you go down very low and attempt to visually spot the runway - with the danger that you can end up putting the plane onto the ground as you have very little room to play with.

Its seems the most likely scenario that a Scud run was exactly what the pilot was attempting, not unusual with Polish pilots apparently.

He wasn't doing an ILS and was 'having a look' down to 100m, as they went far below 100m before reacting suggests they were looking and didn't see anything until too late.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

He chose to keep descending for the reason I keep repeating. He didn't know his true position at all. Clipping trees should not happen if correctly guided, right?

You keep repeating that somehow the ATC were flying (guided) the aircraft. They were not, it was under the control of the pilot, well in fact under control of the autopilot until after the point of no return.

The truth is, when they were under 100 metres, they were falling more rapidly than they should have and they weren't told this by the tower.

Because the ATC had no way of knowing the altitude of the aircraft, their radar wasn't designed for height information
