Food / Making American cheeses (Polish and EU ones are terrible!) [100]

There is only one small bakery that makes great bread, but it is worth making the trek across town for.

I was there last weekend, and there's now an excellent bakery in the heart of the centre that produces some truly fantastic bread on-site from scratch.

Law / Stopped by the Poland's Police for no reason while walking at night [94]

You give the police respect and you will get respect.

Which is why being friendly and open gets you a long way in Europe. I remember having a nice conversation with the police in Slovenia after being stopped for a random breath test, and even explained to him that it was a good idea for them to target Polish cars in the morning due to the tendency of Polish men to drink heavily and then drive the next morning. They were only doing their job, they asked politely if they could check the documents and if I could do the breath test, so no issue at all.

Off-Topic / ATT: PF-ers - Hang or hoist up Polish flags on 2 and 3 May, not 1 May! [5]

The only redeeming non-Marxist aspect of Mayday is that, thanks to the CAhtolic Church, it honours St Joseph the Worker.

There you go then. Something for everyone - socialists can have it as Labour Day, I can have it as an official State Holiday and Catholics can have it as a holiday celebrating one of the most decent characters in the Bible. Everyone wins, right? It actually seems like it's quite a unifying holiday, as there's something for everyone there.

Unfortunately the selection of cheese in Poland is very poor compared to Europe as a whole,

There is (or was) a great French cheese shop in Kraków, run by a maniac who seems to think about cheese 24/7.

Law / Driving a class 2 moped in Poland without a license? [2]

No, you need to have a registration plate on the bike, and you need to have a document that was issued by Poland to take advantage of any waiver in licence requirements.

Australia / Grape wine from Poland for sale in Australia? [17]

There's also sparkling pear-based 'wine' which is very cheap and barely drinkable.

Now now. I drank a bottle once, and it was quite acceptable after a few mouthfuls killed the senses.

News / Which French candidate for president will be best for Poland? [512]

Yes - suggest you rush down the bookies with the prediction that Vlad will be ousted in free elections next year.

I think Johnny doesn't quite understand just how popular Putin is in Russia, nor does he understand why the Kremlin would want to fund anti-EU parties in the EU.

The fact that he thinks Russia is a bigger danger to the United States than to Poland says it all, to be honest.

Law / Stopped by the Poland's Police for no reason while walking at night [94]

Yes Sir & No Sir without smiling while looking at the toe tips of your shoes.

Johnny, this isn't the United States. People in Europe are free to smile and joke with police officers, and police officers in Poland aren't paranoid idiots that shoot people because they reach for their wallet. Police here aren't feared, they're there to help people, and many police also have community support functions, meaning they're there to serve the people, not the local donut factory.

You really should try visiting Poland and see these things for yourself. If you get stopped by the police for speeding, a smile and a friendly admission of guilt can often see you let off with a warning. You'll often see "cordons" set up for alcohol checks, and there's absolutely no reason not to greet them warmly and smile when they request you to blow in the machine.

By the way, at least in European culture, staring at your shoes would often be perceived as rude and hostile.

Why shouldn't people fly the flag on an official State Holiday, as it is officially declared?

Plenty of Polish flags flying tonight, particularly to remind us of the sacrifices made by Polish workers. You wouldn't be against Polish workers now, would you Polly?

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

Nice fantasy Bieganski, but the reality is that there was a huge class of Polish and Ukrainian peasants who were almost indistinguishable, particularly as they spoke the same local dialect and only really differed in religion. They didn't care much about what someone nominally was, and the ethnic strife provoked by Poles in L'viv didn't rear its ugly head elsewhere.

spinning such neurotic conspiracy theories.

Usual tactic of those that sympathise with Russia, really.

the Front National "publicly acknowledged that it had received a $9.8 million loan from a Russian bank with links to the Kremlin,

telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/12/21/marine-le-pens-russian-links-us-scrutiny/

It's not a secret that the FN is backed by Russia. The only strange thing is why you North American posters are so keen to push pro-Russia views and opinions on PolishForums, while also abusing enemies of Russia such as Ukraine.

You have to admit that Le Pen however is by far the best choice.

If you think that a candidate backed with Russian money is the best choice for Poland, you're in dreamland. All it does is put Russian troops one step closer to Warsaw.

Again I ask you, will all work visa's be denied if she closed the borders ?

Yes, her plan is an immediate halt to all immigration.

She's only a problem for stale, out-of-touch, self-regarding globalist Baby Boomers

She's a huge problem for Poland. Strange that you seem keen to push a candidate funded with Russian money, isn't it?

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

Generations of inhabitants of prewar Lwów and the surrounding environs of Galicja maintained their distinctiveness ethnically, linguistically, culturally, and religiously.

That simply isn't true. The only distinction was religion, as most inhabitants of Galicia had little to no comprehension that they spoke "Polish" or "Ukrainian". Ethnic differences were minimal, which is one reason why the inter-ethnic strife was so shocking to many inhabitants of Galicia.

The only people today claming that there were significant differences are the same people that attempt to justify the discrimination that the Ukrainian minority suffered in Galicia, both during Austrian and Polish rule.

Law / Lviv born. Can Polish ancestry be claimed? [34]

She OBVIOUSLY is Ukrainian and therefore there should be NO WAY she becomes Polish citizen because of her ancestry.

Obviously? According to who?

Mixed marriages were routine and commonplace in L'viv before the war, and it would have been nothing unusual to have Polish great-grandparents.

What you think or don't think is just your opinion which is basically meaningless.

I find it very fascinating that you're promoting the candidate that directly threatens Poland. Perhaps you'd like to explain that?

Le Pen "closing the borders" means trouble for Poles. Le Pen ending sanctions against Russia means trouble for Poles. Yet you're on PolishForums promoting such a candidate. How cheeky.

The Muslims killing innocent people in the name of Allah are not imaginary now are they.

They are a non-factor compared to the Russian build-up in Kaliningrad and the upcoming military exercises in Belarus, which will surely be a pretext to leave plenty of hardware there. Muslims are simply a non-issue.

Have you listened to anything or know anything about Le Pen besides that she is a conservative ?

I get her name right for a start.

Furthermore, she supports two key policies, both of which are very harmful for Poland. I know it's difficult for you to understand why Polish labour getting blocked from France is a problem, and I know you don't understand why Russia is a problem, but do try and see it from the Polish perspective.

"We can not tolerate a country that has differences in social costs (labor costs) in the European Union and which violates all EU rules."

Which makes perfect sense. Poland is violating EU rules, while taking advantage of the EU to undercut French businesses.

History / Polish-Hungarian border exchange? [60]

Yes, the Slovaks were quite scared in the early 1990's of what Hungary could do, especially as they had been stirring the pot in Romania. I can't remember where I read it, but there was some real concern in Romania that Hungary would attempt to seize what they considered theirs, similar to the Lithuanian fear of Poland in those early days. Slovaks are also pretty nationalist, unlike the Czechs.

I'm pretty sure if Poland and Hungary had a border today, they'd be squabbling over it in some way.

Poznań (Posen) went from being Prussian to Polish which is also pretty interesting.

Wasn't Posen still very much a Polish city despite being in Prussia? I thought the German presence there was only a minority?

Thus your solution is for America to mass troops and weaponry in Poland?

Not only America. The more NATO troops and weaponry in Poland, the better. Russia isn't going to attack Poland in that case, which is exactly what we want.

A few migrants are nothing compared to the potential losses from Russia.

I really don't think you understand who is massing troops and weaponry on the Polish borders. It's not ISIS.

You're in America, Putin poses no danger to you. It's a different story if you live in Suwałki knowing that Russia would annihilate your town within hours in the event of conflict.

Work / Polish / Irish couple with kids moving to Warsaw - finding a job without any connections. [37]

or take up Delphs offer re the start up scene (money would be low but it would be fun, keep him busy and help build a network).

I actually think the money could be reasonable enough if he knows how to sell. There's so many startups in Western Poland who simply don't know how to push their product to Western eyes, and they just end up trying to copy how the Americans do things without success. They won't have the cash to pay him a high salary for being there, but they'll certainly be willing to negotiate on a commission-only basis.

The problem is having to work with "Januszek", but not speaking Polish can be an advantage there.

History / Polish-Hungarian border exchange? [60]

A concentrated campaign by the Slovak government to weaken Hungarian is starting to bear fruit.

Quite sensible really, given Hungarian revanchism and the rise of Jobbik. There's plenty of idiots in Hungary driving around with stickers on their cars showing Hungary as it was pre-WW1, so a policy of Slovakisation (is that a word?) makes absolute sense in this context.

It's always fascinated me how Bratislava went from being a Hungarian-German city to a Slovak city.

La Pen is clearly the best choice

One wonders why you seem keen to push a pro-Russia candidate on Poland who has openly proposed to slam the borders shut on all migrants, legal or otherwise. That means Poles will not only be deprived of work, but will also be forced to deal with a country that is openly making deals with Russia behind Poland's back.

Macron is the only guarantee for Polish security in this election. Russia is far, far more dangerous than any imaginary Muslims.

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

The Poles in the UK have often found themselves as the lightning rod of prejudice, racism and nationalistic views probably because Poles are white, European and Christian so criticising them can't "really" be classed as racism........

Yes, I'd also say that it was because they were very visible. I remember the first wave, and it was ordinary for them to come and fix things for you and ask for a fair price for the work done, rather than trying to screw you over. That led to huge resentment among the working classes who were earning a good lifestyle out of conning people, and obviously the views then got passed on to others in the family.

My friend's dad owns a fish factory in Scotland, and he told me about how the "Eastern Europeans" were a blessing for his company. He was struggling to find people to work, but they came, worked hard and set a great example for the locals. The problem was that the locals were deeply unhappy about having to work harder, and they already resented the fact that they were working in what is/was considered a very low class job. End result? Racism towards the foreigners.

I'm certain it's the same story up and down the country, and when you add in the less desirable visible Polish traits such as drinking outside shops and living cheaply to save money, it's easy to see how they acted as a lightning rod, just as you've said.

I'm fairly sure there were at least some votes for Brexit based on the mistaken belief that it would get rid of all the "foreigners".
