Travel / Traveling around Poland - our photo stories with very personal commentary [225]

Unluckily, we ran into the final stage of Tour de Pologne cycling race - bikes took control of the the Old Town. They were everywhere, with all those accompanying disgusting decorations. :(:(:(

I immediately noticed sth peculiar. Many old houses in the Main Square are quite wide, unlike those in Poznań, Warsaw or Wrocław which are mostly narrow. I wonder why? I prefer narrow buildings, those wide ones look too oppressively bulky. That is why I always prefered other cities` Main Squeares, which are smaller but look light.

And eventually, the Main Square! Shyt, it is climactic to see this gigantic place.

  • East half of the Square

  • It hosts St Mary`s Cathedral.......( Wow, it is so high!)

  • ....and these tenement houses

  • ..with St Adalbert`s church, one of oldest in Poland, from 11 century.

Near the Florian Gate there is a display of paintings. I have always liked to have a look at it whenever we came to Krakow, but this year`s exhibition is a bit boring, there aren`t any nude acts, my favourite. Strange. What happened to them????? I protest!

Yesterday we went to Krakow on one day trip. The weather was perfect, most photos are of excellent quality.

A few observations

  • Because of its churches, Krakow was called Rome of the North

  • If you touch the fallen knight`s finger.....

  • ...you will come back to Krakow

  • Barbican is a famous object from 16 century

Yes, one point for you. And if you identify the objects in the first two pictures, you will get additional two points.

Life / Przystanek Jezus to the rescue [47]

the idiot that attacked Miecugow:

A guy jumped onto the staged, slapped Miecugow (who was trying to crack a joke about one of Polish RCC cardinals) two times on the face, displaying a placard TVN lies. Then the audience chanted: We are sorry.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

British culture wins hands down:

Not so sure. Series about idiots have also been made in Poland and became quite popular. I would classify it as concord of cultures, not clash.

I wouldn`t put Jaruzelski with those three. They remained hardened mass murderers till their death while Jaruzelski apologised many times for the pain he inflicted on people during martial law.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

The PiS supporters were picketing Geremek's funeral with placards that had offensive slogans on.

Oh, yes, I forgot about it.

More precisely, a few guys from catholic Radio Maria carried one banner with God, thank you for taking him from us and they displayed it before the church in which the funeral mass service was held.

s

That was nasty, indeed, completely against Polish culture and tradition. No wonder soon it was counter parodied: God, why didn`t you take him from us? with the image of Radio Maria director on the banner.

It happened in 2008 and probably radicals realised that such acts work against them, so there has been peace and quiet since then.
