Work / Job prospects for an English (and German) speaker in Poland? [4]

get yourself some kind of TEFL and you should be sorted if you want to teach english,
but with the german qualification you'd be able to teach it no hassle, all the classes are done in the target language so even though you're studyin polish you wouldnt even have to use it at all.

From another topic:

Proficiency in English (CPC), how far it would get in Poland?

My Polish friend speaks perfect polish and english. She has got Cambridge Proficiency Certificate passed with A. How far would it get her in Poland? Is it some sort of equivalent of a polish something? She has no university degree.

With just the English knowledge (even perfect) she could be a teacher or translator at most... (but then she would need a college degree to teach). Maybe she could be hired as a private interpreter or something.

Life / How do Polish people feel about an English teacher with crimson dyed hair? [10]

They have dress codes and they expect a certain standard from you.

only if it's written in your contract, if not then it's their own fault.

In the schools I've worked in I've never had problems and I've piercings and tattoos and have never even once had to wear a suit, not even proper trousers, just jeans, i thought I'd have had problems when it got warm in the summer with shorts but nah, even one else wears them.

If your boss has a problem with your hair colour then he's a tossbag and not worth working for

Food / I am a cider drinker, where to get it in Krakow [40]

Jaysys, I'd love some Irish cider, can't inderstand why you can get crap like apple-flavoured beer here but not proper cider, surely with the hot weather here. it'd be a success.

I suppose the irish pubs have bulmers...no sorry magners...but since there's none in Kato anymore I'm not sure.

I got Cheddar in Lerlerc last week, it was alright like but not the best, although must better than the shite gouda you get in shop

Life / Polish blu tak [11]

get someone to send it over, I couldn't believe you couldn't get it here.

It's a wonderful invention that lets you stick stuff onto wall, sellotape is crap coz when you pull it off the wall you end up tearing some paint or wallpaper off, blu-tak wont.

fantastic stuff, I remember eating a ball of it was a kid for a dare, i did and i won a mars bar, good times. I was sick as a dog but i had a yummy mars bar the next day

News / POLISH GAS RESERVES [40]

The Norwegians aren't going to help, I don't think that Statoil has experience with shale gas.

I've a friend who works for a gas company and said that the americans are prob the best bet, because they'll pay more for the license and they've the most experiences, but as you've seen I'd be nervous of an american company.

Whatever happens, I hope it creates a ton of jobs and will make energy cheaper

French, if I am not mistaken...

g'man thanks

Bwaha, yea, Chavez takes orders from Washington...

That moron, sure he's only full of hot air....anyway, you still haven't made any suggestions, you've only criticised what I've been saying, hardly constructive.

Would norway be a good option, or would you suggest the ruskies or the germans, or would poland be able to do it all without outside help?

Probably not since they're already sold drilling rights to an american company and i;ve been told that some german companies are sniffing around too

News / POLISH GAS RESERVES [40]

You mean PDVSA/Citgo in Venezuela, Shell in Nigeria, and Total in Iraq?

Sure PDVSA takes it's orders from Washington

Ok, Shell are Dutch, my bad there

But Total are Americans, aren't they?
Sure,if I'm wrong i'm wrong I can take it on the chin.

But still think the norwegians are the way to go for Poland.
Who would you get to run it?

News / POLISH GAS RESERVES [40]

miow!

What I said was it'd be better to have the norwegians involved, as they are better experienced and would follow reinvestment plans to improve the efficacy of the drilling/finding/production etc. while also having a better regard for the environment.

The americans would have absolutely no regard for any of these things, look at their record in venezuela, nigeria & iraq.

however, I have absolutely no doubt that the politicans will take on the highest bidder and go for the quick buck rather than doing what is best for the country in the longer-term

News / POLISH GAS RESERVES [40]

Norwegia would actually be Polands competitor in that area.

Possibly but would you rather have (experienced) Norwegian partners who would actually reinvest it into other drills/wells etc or just yanks who'd just take the gas and the profits out of Poland & Europe

Norway have a really good record with energy, when they were at the peak of their oil production they were reinvesting 25% of everything back into the industry

News / POLISH GAS RESERVES [40]

From what I've read on the subject they estimate that if they find all the gas they predict to find they'll increase Europe's gas by 45%

That's massive.

ATM Poland consumes 14billion cubic litres of gas, but they may be able to produce 1.4 trillion litres.

Poland's been wasting it's time with coal and shoulda been drilling for gas a long time ago.

Just whatever happens pray to whatever kinda god you believe in and dont do what the irish govt. did and give all the rights to Shell, they'll cut every possible corner and if you look at Shell's record in Nigeria it doesn't make for happy reading.

Best bet, IMO would be to try and get the Norwegian invovled but try and keep most of the money in Poland

News / Poland needs four children per family for sustain survivor and development [46]

hose countries, especially India and Brazil have really great potential to become serious superpowers

one word, potential so I'll believe it when I see it

If you are familiar with current scientific research you would know that experts of future technologies predicting clear solution for problems with insufficient food. Let us just mention system of hydroponic reserves and algae farms, for instance.

Just because you read one issue of National Geographic doesn't mean you know how to solve the world's hunger problems.

If you'd actually do some proper reasearch you'll find that what's needed is to bring down birth-rates in developing countries so that they have better sustainable populations like countries of Europe.

Maybe Church can help?

Dont get those f*ckers involved. The roman church is losing numbers everyday, thankfully, how anyone can trust a religion thats run by a former nazi is beyond my belief. Although, seeing form

post that might just be your style.

News / Poland needs four children per family for sustain survivor and development [46]

Increased population would generate new demands for consumption. New consumption would generate new production. More people in a system would generate demands for batter state organization and efficiency. Etc, etc.

ladies and gentlemen we have the 21st century John Maynard Keynes meets Adam Smith meets Karl Marx all rolled into one.

Please go and write a book Crow, i wont buy it though, i'll download it from a torrent site.

By your logic then places like India, Brazil, Russia & Nigeria (countries where the birth-rate has increased recently) are the hubs of world economy.
HA!

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

Unfortunately, these situations are quite common.

For real?
That's crazy, she shouda been turfed out and made to move back with her folks or an auntie or cousin or whatever, but if it was my place then there's no way I'd let her stay and I'd make sure that my lawyers got the same result in court too

...so it's ok for women to have to put up with it, is that what you're saying?
Jeez!

Yeah, that's no bullsh/t.. I'm not going to any cop because some woman socked me. This just illustrates the pansy times we live in.

So what would you do? Hit back?
Go to cops get a court order, get a divorce and bam, you get the kids, and the money and she's outta the house on her ass

Travel / Which train in Poland am I less likely to get shanked on? [30]

I've never felt unsafe on a polish train, then again, I cut my hair very short and, I've been told, I look like an angry f*cker so people tend to leave me alone.

so if you fell unsafe shave your hair off, coz nobody wan't to mess with a hardass, or at least one that looks like a hardass

Life / What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland? [164]

The tasteless place was building pyramids when most of us lived in shacks and caves.

Yea well my civilisation were building burial grounds that still survive to this day too...so what?

anyway, if you've actually been to Egypt then you'll know that it's a tacky dump, what amazes me even more is that in recent years the only people goin there are from central and eastern europe, everyone else has realised its a sh1thole.

anyway we're gettin off point here.

I've though of another one, the cheese here is pretty bad, 'cept for the one that you use in pierogi, that one is nice, but there's a real bad choice you can have rubber guada or plastic emmantal, where's the cheddar, or the blue cheese, if I'd a farm I'd be gettin my cheese on and selling it around poland coz the cheese in supermarkets sucks ass

Life / What would YOU do to make life in poland better?? [72]

maybe free water? they really save water, you know in Poland we PAY FOR WATER. ;)

I know, I couldn't believe it when we got a bill for water, I mean how can they legalise putting a cost on something that falls from the sky, weird, then again it I'm from a place where it can rain for up to 255 days in the year so it's only right that it should be free

i see u really hate elders ;D

err....*awkward silence*...emm no, only ones that demand respect instead of earning it, oh and the ultra-religious one :-)

Life / What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland? [164]

As for ethnic food, since majority of population is Polish I don't see a reason to have other types of food, apart to satisfy the foreigners.

it's called having new experiences :-)
you've never tried chinese, or indian, hungarian, mexican food?
really?
i dont belive you ;-P

i'm a big fan of polish food but i find that it's not very spicy, so it's good to have some indian from time to time or a good spicy pizza or some mexican, although i usually make my mexican coz the 2 mexicans where i live aren't awesome they're ok but not great.

Anyway to get away from cooking for a moment,
I'd say a few things in an earlier post.

Nazs Klasa was a culture shock for me, what a pile of crap, all it is is photos of people's kids or weddings or their trips to tasteless places like egypt!

Life / What would YOU do to make life in poland better?? [72]

It could be nice if "The Great Unwashed" would be banned from Warsaw public transport.
Why is it they always have money for cheap alcohol but not for a bar of soap :(

Yea, I'm with ya there, smelly f*ckers on buses and trams is horrible and it's usually older people, don't they know that they smell?

introduce free soap

Life / What would YOU do to make life in poland better?? [72]

once the old generation will die down, so will Radio Maryja, at least those older people have something to listen to:)

Would be better if they'd just play bingo or go to dances rather than be brainwashed by that gobshite, but yea you're right, they'll die off and then it'll hopefully disappear

Life / What would YOU do to make life in poland better?? [72]

foreigners don't have to love PL.. Poles do, however.

now, that's a bit unfair,
I love it and i know other ex-pats that have made a life here and would never dream of moving home

Better roads and public transport are needed and quickly, the Euros aren't far away.
The place could do with a lick of paint, there are far too many building in the country that have turned black from weather damage, if they were painted again or power washed it'd restore some pride especially in the industrial cities like Katowice, Lodz etc. There are many many beautiful building around but they look terrible because of the damage.

I believe that Poland should stay out of the euro zone too as it'll keep things cheaper and encourage exports and investment.

Topless beaches :-)
Banning Radio Maria
Better tv shows, waaaay too much american crap on tv, like CSI, House etc.

However saying all this I think that EU has realised the potential in Poland, a big country with massive amounts of natural resources and a hard-working workforce with a high level of education, i just hope that people continue to vote for the more economically liberal minded parties than the conservative ones. But y'know patience is needed and the politicians/bankers etc should be kept an eye on so that their greed doesn't get in the way of the country's prosperity, like it did in Ireland.
