News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

In the US smoking is banned just about everywhere except outside!

a couple of weeks ago i and others were smoking outside Poznan railway station. security ordered us to the smoking area, also outside the station.

i've mentioned it before. u can't smoke at bus shelters in wroclaw.

even outside there are limits here to smoking..

Life / Is parity the answer for Polish women? [262]

some might.

some folk, men or women are very good at allowing one to think they are in charge.

it's all part of the game of life.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

but why not ban smoking entirely?

because the folks here are aware that smoking is popular and smokers also create revenue.

too many stories about closed pubs in the uk might have caused a bit of fear here.

because smokers usually give way to non smokers. meaning pub owners realize that sooner or later smokers will be under pressure (in pubs) to cut down or quit anyway.

smoker's corner will probably get smaller and smaller over time until it disappears completely.

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

are you a snob? ;)

i hope not.

but it really is true that some simple things are very different when viewed close up.

here's something. when my son was born in England leaving hospital a few days later was a simple matter.

in Poland there are (or were) strict rules about baby leaving hospital/maternity ward. in the case of daughter number one this meant having a baby basket/carrier and baby being completely covered, including her head.

far more care is asked for in Poland. this is a good thing.

the first five years or so of bringing up baby in Poland, with regard to doctors visits etc are different too. seemingly small differences, but they are there.

"Polish pub and restaurant owners have a month left to prepare separate space for smokers.

i noticed this in force in Klub WZ. one half of the club was smoking, the other half was not. there was also the option to go outside.

Life / What's currently in fashion in Poland? [44]

how about scarfs, winter jackets/coats and cowboy boots...?

yes, yes and no.

strange weather at the moment.

mornings are cold, afternoons are warmish. this all means there is a bit of a mixture with apparel.

i don't expect to see bright clothes this fall/autumn - winter.

(seanbm thanks for the piccy of my wife dancing at a rammstein gig)

News / Poles DO return to the UK [39]

telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/8037991/Polish-migrants-returning-to-Britain.html

"I'm very surprised by the figures because they show quite a big increase," said Prof Krystyna Iglicka, a migration expert at Warsaw's Institute for International Affairs and one of the authors of the new research. "But the migrants see that Britain has survived the recession and that there are jobs there."

Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

i know that u have a strict view of marriage. however, i don't see the downsides as u do.
i believe that most couples follow a modern, changing pattern. a style of life that differs and nothing more.
children from these unions don't all turn out to be drug taking delinquents as seems to be your general opinion.
those marriages that show problems may benefit from counselling from caring professionals, but only in the early stages of a rift.
anyone who has to enquire about marriage beforehand by sitting with a counsellor... shouldn't be getting married at all.

Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

Prenuptial counselling involves the purpose of mariage, creating a loving family unit, the art of compromise and benefit of marital harmony.

don't we get this from our family and friends, from life, from being aware, from living with our partner before marriage.
and don't most of us ignore it anyway.

UK, Ireland / Common pitfalls for Poles learning English [187]

What about questions? Does it matter if I ask: "How long have you lived here?" or "How long have you been living here?"?

it only matters in the proficiency exam.

ordinary folk don't pay attention to the difference.

there is the point that there are regional variations in the way people use grammar.

americans don't use present perfect when they can use past simple.
