Work / Some cold, hard facts about teaching in Poland for newbies [101]

Obviously the money is much lower in Poland for teachers

Actually you would be surprised at how badly EFL often pays in Spain and Germany and how well it can pay in Warsaw if you work for the right organisation.

why do Brits, Irish and American come here to teach in the first place. They cant all have Polish girlfriends..

Not that many do any more. Here in Warsaw there is a fraction of the number who were here 10 years' ago.

Of those who are here, some are here long term and own their home, are married with kids, partnered etc and have deep ties to Poland. Some of the Americans who come have Polish blood and want to create ties. There are also others who are teaching EFL as a means to an end - they have a Polish husband or wife who wants to live here but either lack the skills in Polish to do anything else or are unimpressed by the salary levels in other jobs. Others are just washed-up here, without the drive, money or qualifications to go somewhere better.

But having said that,m some are here because they genuinely like the place and/or the work.

Life / Is Lady Gaga popular in Poland? [47]

nothing worse than the gap-toothed slut Madumma, ..... if you don't like it, just wait five mintues.

If you don't like that sort of music, you should stop buying her records.

Personally I can name 2 or 3 songs by Madonna and recognise the sound of a couple more - as for Lady Gaga, I understand she's an American singer who wore a dress made of meat as a pulicity stunt, but that's about it. Both of those singers oeuvres are easy to ignore - just go to bars that play classier music.

@Pol3, if you don't like popculture, just ignore it and don't get so worked up about it that you post bitter and frankly embarassing rants about it on the internet.

Work / I am currently 75% through an on line TEFL course & moving to Krakow [35]

advice for an english speaker in Krakow, in terms of employment opportunities

Move out of Krakow. It is the worst place to be if you're chasing work. Too many people in the same situation. Warsaw is a better bet, though on the whole Poland is not the place to be if you want to teach English and have no qualifications or experience. There are a few places called Callan Method 'schools' that might be your best bet - there are lists of them online.

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

I dont, for much of its history Poland was much bigger then Britain, and still didnt kill as many people

No, clearly you don't see. Or just prefer to ignore the fact that Poland's glory days were well before the Age of Empires, before modern warfare and even before the dawn of large scale literacy and modern record-keeping - never mind, perhaps you like to think that Poland stretched itself from the Baltic to the Black Sea by waving flowers at the residents of the area under their influence.

History / Poland's biggest historical blunder? [341]

I am saying that Britain has killed far more people than Poland.

And Austria has killed far more people than Liechtenstein. See the correlation.

Poland is so much in different weight category, it's like Poland is playing another sport.

Exactly - Britain and Pland were never in anything like the same situation.

North America natives

Mostly Americans who did that, actually.

Africa

Far fewer than you think, and certainly fewer than the other European powers.

Travel / Cheap hotel price in Warsaw? [16]

Somebody asked me about the cheapest hotel in Warsaw. I'm not really up on hotels. They plan to visit soon (and I truly don't want to put them up at mine). They don't mind a fleapit, even miles from the centre. Any ideas?

Love / Do Polish men like to sleep with other men? [79]

In Poland it is not so common

I can assure you it is very common - certainly more than you think. But the OP is indeed trolling. Though accusing someone of perfectly legal sexual practices is not an insult.

Love / Do Polish men like to sleep with other men? [79]

The second part is true - this thread is trolling. Your first sentence is nonsense though - there is nothing insulting or perjorative about same sex relations.

My twopennorth is that bisexuality (at least the practise of it) is a bit more common than in the Anglosphere, but not nearly as much as in, say, Italy or the Arab world.

Language / The usage and future of the special Polish letters: ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ż, ź (Polish language) [203]

Do you believe that the long-term trend will be to do awy with accent marks?

In the long tern future yes. But not yet and Poland has been quite resolute in holding on to its language so far. As the immediate threats to that language which existed in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries vanish, there may well not be the motivation to hold onto every last detail.

Letters in the English language like 'thorn' etc disappeared after the introduction of printing, and 'ash' and 'ethel' within the last few decades - languages do change. I know a Pole in Warsaw (educated and a linguist) who never uses them.

Travel / Szczecin-Torun train [4]

Do you have an idea how much it would cost? Could not find it on th website...

Around 55zl. 85-ish for first class. The ones with IR (rather than TLK)over the picture of the train are a little cheaper, but there isn't much difference.

Aaaaand, I dont have to book before right? Would i have any disadvanteges just booking a couple hours before the train leaves?

No. You wouldn't have a problem.

Study / Summer camp for English speaking kids in Poland? [30]

There were also British Polonia camps in Poland in a nice little castle in western Poland, for Polish Brits to learn Polish and for Polish kids to learn English.

That sounds like a great idea, Dariusz. I wonder if any other countries do that.

and there are kids who speak MANY languages at this camp-

That's one of the good points about both the British School in Sadyba and the American School in Powsinek - they have diplomats' kids from all over the world.

Do you mean bestharctur.pl/bp/index.php Jonnym?

Yes - I can't open the link where I am, but it sounds like them. They've been around for a while and are respected. I've also come across the one you mentioned and heard nothing bad.

Study / Summer camp for English speaking kids in Poland? [30]

Dodgy. Even very.

Reads a bit like an advert, doesn't it. And someone that "just came to warsaw" then says "two camps in polish mountain and whole holiday daily camps" sounds a bit sus, don't they? I wonder why 'Nanncy' was 'at British Embassy' and how long The British Embassy has been leaving 'flyers' around? HM Ambassodor promoting products and services is 'such a relief'. ;-)

Wonder if 'they' have the same IP address....

Dodgier still if you do a quick internet search. This 'Nanncy' who 'thought she came across flyers' crops up elsewhere on the internet (including another thread here' promoting this increasingly dodgy sounding 'City Tennis Club'. But hey, maybe she really did 'come across flyers at british embassy'. Probably while trying to drop them off through the security gates.

One to avoid.

I wonder if they have those organisations' permission to use the logo?

BTW, chris.co.pl, Program and harctur all offer very well established summer camps for kids and have a good reputation.

News / Family Day in Poland [7]

the singledom fad

You mean remaining unmarried? Hardly a fad - more a major demographic trend.

and feminist propaganda

Equality?

3 children or a family of 5 are the bare minimum

Or a recipe for a Malthusian nightmare.

Travel / Advise on where to buy Warsaw metro tickets [9]

at any street kiosk, the metro is a seperate ticket from the bus/tram tickets as i recal. You can get a daily or 7 day ticket.

The first bit is true, about kiosks. The rest isn't. You can use the tickets on trams buses, WKD and SKM. They also sell 3 day tickets. If you want a 7 day ticket, many kiosks either run out or don't stock them. As Maaarysia said, there are also ticket machines now inside the station entrance which probably have instructions in English.

News / Dumbing-down in Polish schools and the Matura [185]

the PC dictatorship

The what?

morons are at most 'scholastically challenged

'Scholastically challenged' is a phrase I've never come across either during teacher training, in the classroom (when I was a Special Needs Teacher for 7 years) or since.

Interesting what you think of less able children - 'morons' is a nasty word that says more about you than about the children with special needs that you cruelly call 'morons'.

Given that you trumpet on ad nauseam about Christian values in other threads, perhaps you should check out what the bible says about the less able amongst us.

USA, Canada / What Polish Spirit would you bring back to the States? [13]

Miod Pitny's decent enough. If you want something different, why not a bottle of Siwucha and maybe a jarzebiak? The more upscale shops ofthen sell Starka - the stuff that's been buried in a barrel for years, but that is expensive.
