News / EU according to Sikorski [4]

I believe that the current EU structure is not sustainable on the long run. At some point in time, a handful of countries - most likely France, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Luxemburg - will form their own political and economic entity without the EU. Whether Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary will be part of that union depends on the development of these countries over the (say) next 50 years.

Which probably also answers Ironside's question: polishforums.com/news-politics-4/middle-europe-63944/#msg1338462

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

This time it's different. Both Republicans and Democrats see an advantage in not coming to an agreement. First they raise the taxes and hurt the economy big time, then they lower the taxes again and look like the good guys. It's a political game; they don't care about what happens to the country and the world economy.

News / Failures of Poland and Tusk`s government [191]

He claims 2013 will be black year for Poland - mass redundancies and unemployment at 15%,

This will depend on how the Americans handle their so-called "fiscal cliff". If they fail to reach an agreement, the US economy might take a major hit and return to a deep recession - taking the EU and Poland with it.

History / Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland [135]

This discussion is about eastern borders as for the west I’m all for reclaiming Hamburg, Kiel, Lubeck, Magdeburg, Leipzig, not to mention Berlin, mind you not for Poland per say but to create a state for Sorbs, a rightful heirs of those lands. :) Something that should have been once the war was over.

You guys are funny. I suggest Poland in the borders of 1914. Problem solved, discussion over... :)

If that's not a legitimate reason...

So Germany has legitimate claims to her lost territory in the east as well then? You are opening a can of worms.

Life / Polish comedies are perfectly distorted representation of Polish culture [9]

and came to a conclusion: Germans are responsible!!!! If they hadn`t started war during WW2, Poles wouldn`t be haunted today

"Haunted" is a very strong word, Pawian, that's why I asked. Poles born after 1989 are still "haunted" even though they've never experienced WW2 or the communist era? If that is really true, then who is responsible for messing up their heads? Not the Germans, so it must be old geezers like you... ;)

No, I didn`t make a mistake. It was exactly 55 years.

Care to explain? I don't get it.

Life / Polish comedies are perfectly distorted representation of Polish culture [9]

Even half a century after WW2 finished, Poles are still haunted with Nazi German occupation horror nightmares:

Not half a century, but almost 70 years. So tell me, who is responsible that the young Polish generation is still haunted by WW2? School? Parents? Politicians?

Travel / The Magnificent Beauty of Nature's Landscapes in Poland [44]

From my perspective all those that were chopping and killing everything in sight in Europe or should I say "the Islands" were sent to Australia as a reword

Really sad story when you see for what they were convicted and sent to the colonies sometimes. The destruction of Europe's environment started way earlier though:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deforestation_during_the_Roman_period

it's only natural it will take You a bit longer to achieve the same degree of damage

It was really bad in the 1980's, but since then large swaths of land have been set aside and declared national parks or protected areas. Tourism is more important than logging, and even our horrible politicians seem to have understood that now.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Reserve_System
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_Australia

Have you got children

Yup. One of the reasons why I was so upset about the school massacre in Newtown (see Off Topic).

Yes, it is so mystic! Inpalpable! Enigmatic! Spiritual!

As long as you don't have a clue, you shouldn't really belittle that. Get out of your country and educate yourself, barbarian! :)

Yes, we Europeans, are nasty destroyers. While you, native Australians, managed to retain your traditional/primordial bond with nature

Everyone around the globe is guilty; no need to mention that. Europeans were just the first ones to completely mess up their continent.

It means that the Wiki definition of wilderness was written by a European.

Maybe by a Pole? ;)

It's very hard to describe what I mean. You'd have to go there to understand.

but it also lacks proper wilderness

Of course, because you've chopped down and killed everything centuries ago...

This pathetic Europe!

That's what YOU said.

What is wilderness, first of all?

For me "real" wilderness means: I can walk for days (or sometimes even weeks) in any direction without seeing a human or a sign of civilization. Good examples in my country are Arnhem Land, the Kimberleys and the Cape York Peninsula. There is nothing comparable in Europe.

Life / Why do people think that Poles are culturally isolated? [126]

Polish people are very rebelious, if you try to enforce something on them, they will do the contrary, just because they don't like to be manipulated.

Some would call that stubborn, not rebellious... :)

Life / Why do people think that Poles are culturally isolated? [126]

this site convinced me that Poles are not worse in those terms than so called "Western Europeans"

Just a general remark: one mistake commonly made on PF is that every form of criticism - well-meant or not - is countered with a "but it is the same in other countries, too". Instead of using their brain and probably changing things, certain people use the easy way out and just point the finger at others. "There's nothing wrong in Poland; they screw up in <insert country of your choice> as well" is their favorite answer. Very human trait, but not really helpful...

Oh, and ... Poles are not better or worse than westerners. ;)

Quite unnessessary because I didn`t mean offence.

Well, that came across completely different here. But I will believe you, so forget what I said and sorry. Nazis, Jews and similar stuff is brought up on PF far too often for my taste.

Where did you get this info from?

summitpost.org/g-ry-sto-owe/567582

My mistake though, as I got confused by the orientation of the map and that they are talking about the Czech Republic in the text. You see: unlike some Poles here I am able to admit a mistake... :)

From an old Nazi guidebook?

Numbnut.

Thanks for the photos, Pawian. Looks quite interesting.

advised me to visit Alaska or Australia for superb views.

Ahem ... in this particular case I didn't recommend to visit Alaska or Australia for the views, but to experience real wilderness ... :)

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

Should I kneel down now?

Not necessary, but you can go and get me a drink instead.

Are you retired?

No, but running my own business. I decide when I work and when I waste my time on PF... :)

but I don`t think you do, either.

I'm from Australia, my friend. 'nough said.

You have google?

I thought you've been to the Table Mountains and would be willing to share some pictures. Ah well, Google it is.

You spend too much time in virtual reality.

Hey, I agree. :)

Sorry, I don`t need to go to Alaska or Australia.

Go out and expand your horizons!. You're missing so much if you're always staying in the same country. Another clash of cultures?

It is enough to go to the Table Mountains in Poland.

You have photos?

but it seems your knowledge of Poland is very superficial.

You don't know what real wilderness means, Pawian. The suburbs of Warsaw don't count... :)

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

your picture of a mountain lake cannot be classified as a wide open space

Scroll down your Google search results ... mountain lakes ...

Still, open or not, wide or narrow, Poland offers similar sights.

Have you ever been to one of the places I've mentioned? If not, try it (for example Alaska or the Kimberleys in Australia) and then we'll talk again. Being in a real wilderness is something you have to experience at least once in your lifetime. And no, Poland doesn't offer that - you'll need to go further East for that.

Now that is a shame for all those agoraphobic Americans

I see that more pragmatic: less tourists on the road, more peace and quiet for me... :)

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

First you show a photo of a lake encircled by mountains in the background, and then you jump to wide open spaces

'Wide open spaces' doesn't necessarily mean 'flat'. It can also be a synonym for

- huge
- spacious
- no other soul as far as the eye can see
- wilderness

But do you really think ... people don`t angle fresh water fish here?

I said I'm kidding, Pawian... :)

But do you really think such views aren`t available in Poland...

No country in Europe will ever compare to the wide open spaces of Canada, the US and Australia. Much as none of the latter will ever compare to the historical places and cultural richness you find in Europe.
