Polonia / Who still speaks pidigin Polish after many years in the country? [59]

how can someone feel that they can take up the high ground on all thing Polish when after 22 years in Poland they cannot pass a simple language test to get a passport.

Perhaps you should ask yourself why someone doesn't apply for one despite not even having to take a test in the language.

Study / British Council CELTA in Krakow, how would you rate it? [60]

That one is really good - psychoterror coming from the East!

Psychoterror in Poland!

The whole thing is just so hilariously made up. Jon will know better, but as far as I know, the CELTA centre in Kraków has had a great reputation for years. It's quite possible "student1" spent his whole time drinking and not studying, which as anyone familiar with the CELTA knows - it's a no-no, and instructors will punish you if you turn up with a hangover and incomplete homework.

News / Which French candidate for president will be best for Poland? [512]

So, after all has been said and done, we now see that Macron has won not only the Presidency of France, but also an outright majority in the National Assembly. Le Pen and the Front Nationale were humiliated, winning only 8 seats out of over 500 on offer.

Europe is rejecting the hateful Trumpist right wing ideology promoted by Russia, and this result shows that 2017 has been the year of the fight back against dirty politics. Change is coming to Europe, and 2016 will prove to have been the highpoint of the right wing in Europe. Even the far-left party managed to win more seats than the discredited and worthless Front Nationale.

Love / DO RELIGIOUS POLISH GIRLS STILL EXIST IN THIS GENERATION [66]

A sort of cross between Catholicism and Pentacostalism, with speaking in tongues and faith healing and other theatrics. Adherents tend to be rather zealous and gung-ho.

Bloody hell, such people exist within the RCC?

I always thought Catholicism was somewhat of a bastion of sanity against those types.

History / Poland's law and justice.. return of Sanacja? [19]

It wasn't question of money and technology but of the bad management... Poland could still lose against might of Germany and Soviets combined.

Do you think the Soviets would have even invaded if the Polish Army was waging a guerilla war against the Germans? It seems to me that they deliberately waited until they knew that the Germans had already won.

History / MS Jan Heweliusz disaster [3]

Thank you Ziemowit. If I may ask, do you remember anything about the reaction in Poland at the time? Was it seen as the ferry company to blame, or was the Master blamed instead? I'm having a very hard time finding out much about it, only that like the Estonia, the governments in question seemed to conspire to cover up the real reason for the loss.

And yes, it's a truly horrible disaster. The MS Estonia was also horrible, but the conditions were truly awful on the night the Jan Heweliusz sank - the fact that anyone survived at all was remarkable. The worst thing of all is that no-one seemed to actually pay attention to what happened with the Jan Heweliusz, leading directly to Estonia the year after.

History / Poland's law and justice.. return of Sanacja? [19]

After all his ego and his inability to govern put in charge of Poland the some inept group that screwed up badly.

Are we...agreeing?

Piłsudski seemed to rely way too much on "Cud nad Wisłą", and his emphasis on putting army officers in charge of large swathes of land as absent landlords was a complete disaster. Had he lived until WW2, I dare say he would be remembered as one of the worst commanders in Polish history.

WW2 didn't have to go that way, but Piłsudski seemed to be completely unable to accept that warfare was changing quickly. What were great tactics in 1920 simply were outdated by 1935, and what he left behind was a bunch of useless idiots that couldn't manage their way out of a paper bag.

From the very beginning, Poland should have trained a guerilla force capable of tying up huge amounts of resources. The country didn't have the money to arm itself on a massive level, but it certainly had the resources to create a destructive guerilla army with the benefit of knowing the terrain.

History / MS Jan Heweliusz disaster [3]

Does anyone have anything to share with me about this disaster? I'm thinking about Ziemowit and Polonius in particular for their knowledge of Polish history, but if anyone else has anything to say, I'd love to hear it.

To cut a long story short, a Polish ferry capsized in the Baltic Sea in 1993, killing 55 people. It's not really known in Europe, as it was overshadowed by the Estonia disaster in 1994. The ship itself should never have sailed, while the ship was also in pretty bad condition.

Life / Settle in Poland, which city is best? [30]

"Where a resident of Poland derives incomewhich, in accordance with the provisions of this Convention is taxedin the United Kingdom, Poland shall, subject to the provisions of sub-paragraph (b) of this paragraph exempt such incomefrom tax."

In short, it only applies to income that has already been taxed. This means that you need to pay tax to Poland on the difference between the UK tax-free amount and the Polish tax-free amount.

UK tax free amount - 11,500GBP / 54500PLN.
Polish tax free amount - 0PLN / 0GBP (but there are some allowances that you can claim, the "cost of earning income")
That means that you need to pay 18% of the difference between 0 and 54500PLN.

As the text you've quoted above makes clear, you only have an exemption from earnings that were already taxed. The tax free amount is by nature tax free, which means that Poland wants her share of the cash.

If I were you, I'd seek the advice of a competent and qualified tax advisor, especially as Poland has access to British bank accounts.

Life / Settle in Poland, which city is best? [30]

Why, then, Poland, and not Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia, countries that have sizable Russian minorities and border directly on Russia?

I'd strongly suggest Narva in Estonia. Estonian is all but useless there for ordinary life, the city looks and feels Russian and you can easily get a multiple-visit visa to Russia from there. For the authentic Russian vibe, the twin town on the other side of the river, the Russian Ivangorod, is an absolute dive.

Lublin in comparison is useless, not least because of the huge amount of students.

Life / Settle in Poland, which city is best? [30]

The UK/Poland double tax agreement only means that you will get a tax credit for any taxes paid to the UK tax office while resident in PL. It doesn't stop Poland from claiming the difference in tax paid to the UK and the tax owed to Poland.

If you're going to be outside of Poland for more than 6 months a year while maintaining a residence there, then you need to thoroughly document what you're doing, preferably with receipts.

Life / Settle in Poland, which city is best? [30]

He may choose not to become a tax resident in PL then.

Well, he can spend up to 182 days a year here without becoming tax resident, but if they deem your "centre of vital interests" to be in PL, then you have a tax liability regardless of the days spent here. Generally speaking though, if you have residency in a normal country (i.e., not some tax haven) and you document thoroughly your days in and out of PL, it's fine, just as long as you don't have a family or other circumstances in which they can claim you have residency in PL.

Also there is UK/Poland double tax convention, income taxed in the UK is exempt from tax in Poland even one becomes tax-resident in Poland.

Of course, but the UK tax free amount is significantly higher than the Polish one. You'll have to make the difference up to Poland. so you can effectively say that 18/32% of your work-related income is going to Poland.

Life / Settle in Poland, which city is best? [30]

This is bizzare what you have said. Income elsewhere is not taxed in Poland. Can you point out to any regulation stating otherwise?

Of course it is. Polish tax law requires you to pay tax on your worldwide income if you are tax resident in PL.

Link from the OECD:

oecd.org/tax/automatic-exchange/crs-implementation-and-assistance/tax-residency/Poland-Tax-Residency.pdf

So, let's say you do some work for Polish Affairs Monthly in Chicago. You write a series of articles for them, and they send you a cheque for $500. You put it into your secret Swiss bank account, but you still need to declare it to the Urząd Skarbowy and pay Polish taxation on it.

cms - I assume he was planning to do the usual "work online, have foreign bank account and say nothing to the Polish taxman" deal. Stupid idea these days, especially since ZUS started combing social insurance databases.

According to this, you never pay tax twice on same income from other EU countries in Poland.

Yes, but if you are resident in Poland for more than 185 days a year, then you are tax resident in Poland. That means paying 18/32% of your income to Poland. You can get a tax credit for the tax paid to foreign tax authorities, but the tax free amount in Poland is very low.

And yes, they have access to foreign bank accounts.

Love / Advice needed... Canadian guy to meet a Polish woman in Poland [15]

Are Polish women generally open to the idea of meeting someone in this sort of way?

Nope. Polish women are not particularly interested in cavemen, which is why they marry foreigners.

Try Russia. It's much more what you're looking for.

I have savings and income elsewhere.

Which requires you to pay taxes on that income. 18/32% to the Polish tax office, please.

You can't stay in Poland if you don't have a reason for being here. Simply wanting to stay and take advantage of Polish taxpayers is not acceptable.

Love / DO RELIGIOUS POLISH GIRLS STILL EXIST IN THIS GENERATION [66]

In Poland on the other hand one parish/church will have 3/4/5 priests.

That's almost certainly the direct result of the riches that were available for priests in the early 1990's. Many opportunists were "called" to the priesthood at that time, especially as it was by no means certain that Poland would ever catch up with the West.

The numbers entering the priesthood today are far less, because the easy pickings are no longer there.

Australia / Drug smuggling by Poles into Australia [4]

Just came across this article - occrp.org/en/daily/5720-australia-two-polish-men-charged-over-one-tonne-mdma-seizure

Does anyone else know of incidents involving Polish men smuggling drugs such as MDMA into Australia? It seems that it's very common for Poles to get involved in drug trafficking in Asia and Oceania, as the rewards are very high there. The drugs smuggled into Australia had a street value of over 100 million USD - which is a remarkable amount by all accounts.

Thankfully, the two men involved, Dariusz Zbroszczyk and Piotr Latusek will be imprisoned and deported back home, meaning that Australia will have one less drug problem to worry about. The unfortunate thing in this case is that they're likely to carry on the same activities back home.

UK, Ireland / Polish gang defrauded British taxman of 17 million pounds - GUILTY [5]

In yet another piece of absolutely unsurprising news from The Isles, we now see that a Polish gang was convicted yesterday of running an illegal tobacco factory. Unfortunately, Robert Zduniak was cowardly to accept his sentence, instead choosing to run (probably back to Poland). Hubert Jankowski and Lukasz Pawelec stayed to hear their sentences, which saw them given 4 years in prison for their huge scam.

2br.co.uk/news/local-news/2300375/trio-jailed-for-17m-tax-fraud

Hopefully Zduniak will be caught soon and made to serve the entirety of his sentence in the worst prison Poland to offer. Like always with these stories, it seems that Poland's most successful export has been large scale criminality.

Hopefully these stiff sentences will discourage other Polish people from COMMITTING CRIMES ABROAD.The abuse of the hospitality extended to them by other countries is unbelievable.

UK, Ireland / Polish trucker jailed for tachograph fraud [4]

In what should be no surprise to any of us on PolishForums, yet another Polish criminal was jailed this week for dangerous behaviour. This time - for using a device that allowed him to cheat a truck tachograph. Use of such machines is widespread among Polish drivers in Europe, as it allows them to drive further. The dangers of such a device are obvious, as tired drivers should not be operating vehicles of potential death.

nottinghampost.com/ee/story-30364944-detail/story.html

To his credit, when the device was found, the Polish trucker driver from Bykowizna, Debe Wielkie pled guilty instead of trying his luck in front of the beak. Perhaps he knew there was zero chance of getting away with it, but regardless, he was placing himself and many others in danger through his use of such a device. He claimed to regret using it, but given the greed of the average Polish trucker, it seems more likely that his only regret was in getting caught.

The attitude of the Polish authorities towards such devices is clear:

In Poland this sort of offence would result in a fine - but the British courts quite clearly take a far more serious view, said the judge.

Clearly the long arm of British justice succeeded in this case.

One can only wonder what it will take for the Polish community to stop committing widespread crimes on "The Isles", as it is commonly known by the Polonia in the UK.

UK, Ireland / Armed and Dangerous Polish man on the run in the UK [12]

People in the UK should be afraid after the clearly dangerous and hostile Polish national Michal Kisier escaped from Salisbury District Hospital on Tuesday evening.

nwemail.co.uk/news/national/article/Prisoner-sought-after-pre-planned-escape-may-have-had-assistance-df3f1829-a66f-41eb-a8ee-89bc0f8a5cab-ds

He was serving a five year sentence for holding captive a woman and her daughter, including threatening to kill them. He was also convicted of assault and for possessing weapons. Clearly not a nice guy, and a perfect example of the kind of criminality that was exported to the UK. Anyone spotting him should call 999 immediately. He's clearly dangerous and should not be loose on the streets.

USA, Canada / Polish-Jewish survivor of the Holocaust celebrates her 100th birthday [29]

Another nice story concerning a Polish survivor of the Holocaust. She had a remarkable story, including escaping the Nazis twice before finally moving to the United States. She succeeded there, and her life is one of success against adversity.

miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/coconut-grove/article149260949.html

Perhaps the strongest words are here:

'It is very important for young people to know about different religions,' said Marysia Green... 'There is still anti-Semitism everywhere, and for young people, it's new. The Holocaust can always happen if you don't watch.'

Those words could well be aimed at her homeland. But she also said:

"Jews go through difficulties all the time, but we will never disappear," Green said. "We never give up. We always come back."

As we can see today, Jewish life is flourishing in Poland, and even Polish parents send their children to Jewish schools these days. If the American Jewish community continues to support Jewish life in Poland, it can only go from strength to strength.

UK, Ireland / Polish smugglers caught and jailed [10]

Smuggling from Poland to the UK has always been a problem due to the huge difference in taxation levels, and now yet another huge attempted import was stopped and seized. Two people tried to smuggle in 117,240 cigarettes - which should have had an astonishing £30,180 in tax paid. They tried to sneak in instead, and were caught by HM Customs and Revenue officers who are well aware of such scams.

eadt.co.uk/news/polish-cigarette-smugglers-jailed-after-stop-at-harwich-international-port-1-5036670

Fortunately, they were caught, and now one of them is facing a 10 month prison sentence while the other faces a 15 month prison sentence. The message will surely be getting through to these criminals - CRIME DOES NOT PAY IN THE UK. One can only wonder how many cigarettes were smuggled from Poland to the UK in the last 13 years.
