News / Will many Poles migrate to Germany in May 2011 (after opening labor market)? [157]

too often Polish leaders have been bought off by Germans or Russians

The above is considered to be true, the main issue, are the Polish decision makers prepared to change and put national interests before their own. Most independently wealthy Poles, have a second bolt hole outside of Poland. The Periods between WW1 and the start WW2 was 21 years, between end of WW2 and the end of the cold war 44 years. Poles are thinking why will this time be any different, make as much as you can, as quickly as you can, secure your own future before that of anyone else or the countries, this is the problem faced by Poland today.

Food / Alcohol Prices for Wedding in Warsaw - Advice needed [19]

Luksusowa is my potato vodka of choice.

It is good Harry, I always take SIWUCHA as presents to my friends outside of Poland, advise them to stick it in the freezer for two days then crack open, as it has a cork stopper it is normally polished off in a single sitting, most people just can't get enough.

don't look to your neighbors for welfare as they've no history of doing anything but the opposite!

I would agree with the above, Germany will always see Poland as the buffer zone to the East, As the EAEC, forms closer ties from 2012 onwards, it will present fresh challenges for the EU and Nato.

Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

80's I have been told many a story of Polish women entertaining Arabs in Warsaw in the aforementioned period, many of them married as well, the husband would turn a blind eye, for a few green backs. Good to see things have moved on, or have they.

Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

Link to a interesting blog I read recently:

The Prostitution of Poland

From Eastern Europe Watch:

One of the most depressing features of contemporary life is how money power and consumer values dominate most aspects of human existence. And in the process has reduced life to a constant form of prostitution or, in the neoliberal buzzword term, "selling yourself". The disintegration of Polish culture under the neoliberal experiment unleashed by the doctrinaire Balcerowicz back in 1990 and reinforced since has made a mockery of the notion of a Catholic Nation. Only money and a crude materialism now prevail. That is shown in the way Polish women are now regarded as commodities in the brave new world of an unfettered free market. When I first went to Poland in 1999, the three questions one was asked on a persistent basis were,

1) Why are you in the Poland?

2) How long are you in the Poland for?

3) What do you think of Polish women?

1.2 mln?! can ask you about data supporting this number?

The number of Poles in the UK could only be a guesstimate, many Poles in the UK are sub existence dwellers, therefore they do not register and work in the black economy.

You can twist and squirm on Polish historical facts, but facts are facts my dear friend.

I am simply encouraging you not further pollute other people's thinking with the victim mentality you've thus far defended - there's no benefit to it, is there?

It is little secret that there is no love lost between the government and what should be their natural allies in Europe, the pro-American non-Eurozone centre-right government in Warsaw. Poland goes to the polls on Sunday and for the first time in its post-communist history the centre-right government of Donald Tusk's Civic Platform is expected to be re-elected. Two key ministers - Radek Sikorski, the foreign minister, and Jacek Rostowksi, the finance minister - are both British-educated Poles close to the Conservative party.

REENT, BE REDEEMED!

"Both the secular and religious ideal in the medieval period was to reclaim the prostitute if at all possible, and the medieval Christian was always conscious from the example of Mary Magdalene that a harlot could achieve salvation. Usually the machinery of the Church stood ready to assist women willing to leave the life of sin, although it was recognized that realistically chances for successful reform were slim. Still the hope of reform was there and two major avenues of reform were advance. Favored by most reformers were attempts to induce the repentant prostitute to enter the religious life, to become a nun.. . . In 1198 Pope Innocent III urged that all good citizens attempt to reclaim prostitutes. . .

A second method of dealing with the reformed prostitute was to encourage her to marry. . . In 1109 Pope Innocent II lauded those who married harlots in order to reform them and described their actions as not "least among the works of charity." Those who rescued public prostitutes and took them to wife were performing acts that would count for the remission of their own sins."

Law / GBP safe haven currency for 2012. [5]

I never thought I would be bullish on the GBP, although I see it being the safe haven currency in Europe for the first half of 2012, here are my reasons why,

1. The banking/Euro problem in the EU is yet to be resolved.
2. I see a European bank going under in the first half of 2012, my guess would be a French one.
3, The CHF is still over valued
4. GBP offers good value and is outside of the Euro.
5. If the Euro goes, PLN will be a bloodbath.

Any thoughts?

Do you really expect today's Germans and Russians to fix what their grandfathers did in another country?

The relations between Germany and Poland are at a post WW2 high, there is an old saying' it is better to have a friendly neighbor, than a distant enemy'. Germany are looking after themselves, this can be seen by the Russian gas pipeline bypassing Poland to Germany. Foreigner4 if you are dissatisfied with Poland and the attitude of Polish nationals, you know where the door is, close it on the way out.

I have no idea how you can conscionably make such a statement.

So please explain, how the EU laws work in favor of PL, I am really intrigued at this one.

If the laws work against you then why the hell are you not demanding better laws from your leaders?

The laws don't work against me, they are just not in the interests of the country, there is a brain drain in certain sectors in PL, and to fill the void PL must look east or to the middle East/Africa as is apparent in the hospitals. The old EU is not only occupying PL through the rise of the Multi Int, it is also enticing the best brains away, with offers of gold.

Poland is part of the EU, therefore Poles have the rights to work in any country within the EU, it is the system of the EU that is failing Poland NOT Poland failing its residents. The current Polish brain drain comes at cost to the Polish tax payer, these people have been educated for free in Poland, there needs to be a law passed, ensuring that those educated at the tax payers expense give something back to their financial sponsors, in this case the country.

regarding that issue there is sth like the 'swedish model'. maybe you should read sth about that

Making illegal to buy, although legal to offer sex, is still not dealing with the problem. Prostitution needs to be outlawed in full, otherwise the pimps and traffickers will have a legal loophole in the law.

This space is called freedom.

Many other European countries are democratic societies, yet prostitution is still a crime.

What a fine line it is between the 'honest' working prostitute and the woman who pretends not to be one when getting her dinners and assorted entertainment paid for when dating.

The case for making prostitution against the law, to buy sex begins with the premise that it's base and exploitative and demeaning to sex workers. Legalizing prostitution expands it, the argument goes, and also helps pimps, fails to protect women, and leads to more back-alley violence, not less. This fight over legalization has been waged in the last few years over international human-trafficking laws and proposals to make prostitution legal in countries like Bulgaria, a movement that the U.S. government helped defeat. In 2004, the federal government expressed its position: "The United States government takes a firm stance against proposals to legalize prostitution because prostitution directly contributes to the modern-day slave trade and is inherently demeaning." The government also claims that legalizing or tolerating prostitution creates "greater demand for human trafficking victims.

You don't have to be a moralist or a prude to buy the argument for banning prostitution

Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

The travelling prostitute is recorded in the tenth century. Dozens of brothels thrived on the outskirts of central Warsaw since its establishment as the national capital in the sixteenth century, as in other large Polish cities and towns. These cities established municipal brothels and taxed both prostitutes and brothelkeepers. The first recorded brothel (Dom publiczny - literally public house) in Poland is considered to be in Bochnia in the 15th century, which catered to merchants who came to buy salt from the mines there. A Hungarian explorer to Poland in the early seventeenth century, Morton Szepsi Csombor, wrote that when he passed through Lipnica Murowana they were "surrounded by a swarm of unclean maidens to flatter and compliment us and play and sing". In Bochnia the city authorities from time to time passed ordinances against "harlots and loose people". In 1610 the mayor and town councilors appointed fines, and an ordinance from 1743 called for severe punishment for adultery. The trade guilds demanded a proper "moral" life of its members, one of the articles of the butcher's guild set a payment of 12 cents into a box for "debauchery or starting a conversation with a married woman".From the fifteenth century police inspected brothels and removed women thought to be infected. The sixteenth century saw the establishment of venereal disease hospitals such as St. Sebastian's in Krakow in 1528 and St. Lazarus, in Warsaw.

As one of the last bastions of the Catholic Church in Poland, how can prostitution still be legal and morally accepted?

Life / Poles hard working or just born lazy. [58]

Why not turn the table around

Why not do it the same way as Spain, as unemployed when you have drawn down your benefits paid in, you are on basic minimum. That will motivate you lot to work.

Again you're missing my point. Compare and contrast what you can actually buy in UK or US for 2 minimum wages

And what about the cost of living expenses, if Brits will not take on minimum wage, because they are better off on social benefits, why do you consider Poles are so well off. Firstly Poles turning up to the UK/USA have to start from ground level there are costs associated to relocation, all of this has to be worked into the equation.

Start with gasoline, next look into real estate prices.

The average age of a first time buyer in the UK is 37, so you believe a couple both on minimum wage are able to do better than the average Brits, Furthermore I would expect most Poles on minimum wage in the UK, buying and running a car is a luxury they can ill afford.

It seems like the Germans basically got what they wanted

The main Poles moving to Germany have been from the science and technology field, so Germany have certainly got what they wanted and it is a further drain on Poland. Most of the Poles moving to Ireland/UK were the Polish unemployed and unemployable.

Love / Experience of Irish-Polish wedding in Warsaw? [8]

tried looking at pan club couldnt find any photos or website ?

As far as I understand they do not have a website, its a place you know or you don't, if you are familiar with Warsaw. You will know the Copernicus monument, directly behind it is the Science academy, on the top floor is a place called the Pan Club, its a wonderful building and great setting. You are bang on the Royal route, Nowy swiat to the left of you, Stare Miasto to the right. There are also a few hotels within a short stroll, Harenda Hotel ( Budget) Sofitel ( middle) Bristol ( higher). We were married in the Vistek church, the church chopin would plan the organ on Sundays. Also the Visitek ( visitors) church have English speaking priests over the summer, we lucked out as there was a Polish canadian priest who conducted the wedding in both English/Polish. If you want a band who are invited to play at weddings all over Poland, I can send you the contact details they speak English as well.If you have got 50 guests from Ireland they need to be in a place they can wander around and see the sights.

If you want to hire a car go to this place it is a car museum, although they hire all the cars with a driver out for weddings

muzeum-motoryzacji.com.pl/pl/historia_muzeum

Good luck ' up and at them ' I am done with the free info.

Midas, the issue here is why do Poles bust their balls in the UK or USA for minimum wage, then as soon as they return to Poland, its back into the old ' red and white routine ' My opinion, most Poles believe when they go to the UK or USA they start from zero and they have the possibility of opportunity, when they return to Poland they slot back into old routine of why bother because no one else is. It is not that Poles are lazy in general, only in Poland are they lazy, due to the " nie moge" attitude.

Some jobs just pay minimum wage, accept it, it is better to earn for your own self esteem than be on benefits. Who wants to get locked into a low life of being unemployed.

You have taken my quote out of context, I was NOT specifically referring to working in Poland, I was focusing on the point, I would have taken any job if the need occurred to put bread on the table and worked the job well, no matter the level of salary:

1. Because I took the job, that means working it to the best of my abilities.
2. When I have left a job it has always on best terms, I have never been fired in my working life.
3. I always had a vision I would be an employer in the future, therefore I treat others the way I would like to be treated.

4. If you are going to do something, do it well, or don't bother getting involved.
