News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

For historically permanent residents - it is, at unbelievable pace.

Poland has developed at an enormous pace in the last twenty years. It (she?) is growing in every way as a modern, energetic European country. I came to live here in 2000, and I have seen wonderful changes in every sphere of life. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in Europe. And when the RC Church is finally brought to heel, life will be even better.

What is interesting about it?

He's dead but still smiling. Now that's what I call optimism.

Work / Teaching English in Wrocław - TEFL, fair pay? [40]

Or do one in Scotland. The cost will probably be about the same. I did mine at Basil Paterson in Edinburgh. Scary stuff for a month full on, but I got my money's worth. Mind you, that was when the mortar on the castle was still wet.

students who will most certainly know more about the language than you do

At mid-higher levels this is almost bound to be true. Poles want to know how English grammar works, and they ask their teachers. Jono, if you can't give an immediate answer to this question, think about doing a proper course:

Why are these sentences correct?: Put down the gun/Put the gun down/Put it down
But not: Put down it.

Life / Observation of Polish drivers, by and English anthropologist. [94]

I hope you are joking. Today, as I was driving home, an oncoming car lost its badly-secured roof-top load, part of which hit my car. Luckily, it was just a box of polystyrene and the damage to my ride was minimal. I thank my lucky stars that it wasn't something heavier. As it happened I was keeping to the speed limit and paying attention to the behaviour of other road users. I was sober, too. Perhaps I am a fetishist in this repect, but I am alive and kinky for another day.

Travel / Winter clothes for trip to Warsaw? [13]

Dec 14 - 21

It could be quite mild then. Jan/Feb are the coldest months.

coats in the winter

The first one might not be warm enough; I'd bring the other. And no, you'll look fine.

I tend to wear hiking shoes on my feet

Where tf else would you wear them?
A plain wool hat and gloves completes the combo and you're ready to roll.

UK, Ireland / First proper "Polish" School in the UK - The Next Stage of Ghettoisation [283]

What was it like at your school?

Marist Fathers. All boys. Brutal. I recently found my old sports master on Friends Reunited and asked him if he remembered hitting me on the arse with a cricket bat. He said he didn't. If a man can't remember beating a twelve-year-old child with a cricket bat, he's either a liar or insane. I could go on but let's say British education has moved on in at least one respect.

Ok haters:)

er...hello. That's not a very friendly introduction.

I'm Polish.
I live and work in England.

I'm English and live and work in Poland.

I speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, Norwegian, Polish and English.

Congratulations.

I was headhunted and offered the job

Did I miss something? What job?

Those I've met hardly speak one foreign language, I don't know anyone who speaks two.

So, the greater the number of languages you speak, the better at the job you are. OK. What's the job?

seemingly homo erotic chit chat between straight males in the North of England :)

Not only in God's country. In the part of London I grew up in (LB Greenwich) street market traders called everyone darlin' , and I mean males talking to males. Perhaps things have changed.

News / Poland at International Mathematical Olympiad [13]

Absolute geniuses, but very very strange

When I was a student I had a job cleaning the bogs and offices at the Cambridge University astrophysics department. These guys were absolutely the top in their fields, but many of them couldn't make eye contact and practically hid behind their coats rather than answer my Good morning.

Real Estate / Car Living in Krakow (instead of renting a flat?) [12]

Where did it get to minus 30?

It got down to minus 32 in Podlasie last winter. Only for a couple of days, but a few years ago we had the worst winter for forty years. Then it was well below thirty for two weeks.

Language / Where is that "something" that makes others think you are really good in language [141]

You can also say "no skin off my teeth";don't ask me why lol.

I think you are mixing two idioms.
No skin off my nose means 'It doesn't affect me/I am disinterested/I will not suffer'
By the skin of my teeth e.g. 'I managed to catch the plane by the skin of my teeth' means by a small margin. Or something like that.

Anyway p3, this thread went way off topic ages ago. The only reason it hasn't been binned is because you're a mod. Not that I'm complaining; digression is what makes conversation conversation.

To answer the OP, I'd say people think you are a proficient linguist if they understand what you are saying (although I suspect they meant something else).

while those who, like the French, do have them, don't want them ("Je sais pas" in place of "Je ne sais pas").

I didn't know the French were campaigning for that. Perhaps it's just the lingua-fascists at the Academy Francaise.
"I can't get any...satisfaction. No, no, no."
Doesn't really work, does it?

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

here a three star is a crap shoot.

Absolutely true. The star system in Poland is completely inconsistent. In my little town there's a no-star hotel which is better than many three-star dumps I've used. Four-star places are usually not worth the extra. When travelling in PL I check out the websites of three-star places. You can often get a vibe from how much care they take in putting their site together.
