Feedback / Suggestions by members to make PF more user friendly and entertaining. [81]

It's time to loosen up.

I agree. The warning system has never been particularly helpful, especially not in those cases where they hand out a warning for not staying 100% on topic in the main forum. No human conversation works that way. There will always be topic drift. It's simply unavoidable. Baiting is another BS warning. Oh no, that mean dude made me respond to his post and hurt my feelings. LOL!

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

it is responsibility of the banks to asses risk involved.

I agree, but on the other hand nobody forced Greece to take the $360 billion bailout from the E.U., the European Central Bank and the IMF. They needed the money and complained afterwards that the loans came with some really uncomfortable conditions attached. Llike reducing their ridiculous welfare spending or increasing taxes.

doesn't bode well for the EU future

I said it in other threads already: I don't believe that the E.U. in its current form will have a long-term future. The economies of the member states are far too different, and it's quite likely that at some point the union will break apart into a rich western part, and poorer southern and eastern parts. Maybe a union with regions that are allowed to develop at a different pace, if that is logistically possible.

all the money to "save" Greece went straight to German banks

It might be ethically questionable that the Germans profited from the loans, but then ... they carry the risk. Greece has defaulted several times on its debt already, and I wouldn't be surprised if they would do it again. There's something structurally wrong in that country.

Use them up and throw them away...

Use them for what? To burn a few billion Euros?

Britain was never compatible with Europe because we love our freedom too much.

The Poms loved their British Empire too much.

You may never have been born if it wasn't for The Brits

Well, you provided the location and made room by killing off the locals, that is true.

they got their place at the main table

Constantly demanding special treatment.

...would stop these two ridiculous nations continually going to war with each other!

Ridiculous nations? The Brits were at war with almost every country on the planet at some point in time, and they have a long tradition of meddling in other countries' affairs, which continues to this very day. Let's be honest: Britain was never really compatible with Europe, simply because her politicians are still stuck in the the 1930s mentally, dreaming of the golden days of the old Empire.

At some point in time, the net payers of the EU will probably have to decide if they want to continue to financially support members like Greece, Hungary or Poland. It's an expensive hobby, and the politicians of these member states were never really behind the European idea anyway. They are, in Frank Zappa's words, "only in it for the money".

Of course there are regional influences, too, but if you look around you will notice that most of the young people nowadays want to emulate American culture. I travel on a regular basis to Asia, Europe and South America, and cultures there have changed significantly over the past 20 to 30 years. You hear American music on most stations, everyone has a freakin' smartphone, McDonald's and Starbucks are everywhere, just to give you a few examples.

Name a German movie you've seen recently

"Look Who's Back". You'll have to watch it in German though to truly appreciate the movie.

cultural power

What do you mean by that? That they are unable to spread their culture beyond German borders? If yes: I believe that there is only one cultural power left in the world anyway, and that is the USA. They export their lifestyle (music, movies, fast food, social media, smart phones, vulture capitalism...) to every country on the planet, and it slowly takes over and ultimately ruins unique cultures everywhere. Poland, Germany, Japan and even China - in some respect they all look the same now. The current administration claims to be anti-globalism, but in reality they favor it when it comes to their cultural dominance in the world.

Germany should be grateful the Soviets didn't claim part of it as its own forever.

Unfortunately, I do have idea.

You misunderstood what I was saying. If you think that the treatment of the demonstrators in Paris looks "totalitarian", then you need to watch what would happen in the USA if the same kind of people were running rampant in the streets. The Euro cops are all little peaceniks in comparison.

A hint about the future of the totalitarian state of the EU?

You think that is a rough treatment? Ha ha ha. If these people would be demonstrating the same way here in the US as they do in Paris and elsewhere, the National Guard would've taken care of them. The EU a totalitarian state? You really have no idea. Silly talk from the Brexit crowd.

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

where warming was expected, had cooled.

Don't look at isolated areas, look at the whole picture. Global warming refers to an increase of the average global temperature. There are areas where a cooling trend can be observed, while others show a rise in temperatures. On average though, it's getting warmer.

So what do you think is happening right now in the Arctic? The ice cap is melting.

washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2018/12/11/arctic-is-even-worse-shape-than-you-realize/

isn't an island the last place you'd want to be?

New Zealand is not a tiny atoll in the middle of the Pacific. They have mountain ranges almost as high as the Rocky Mountains.

The ozone layer hole has shrunk to record low...even though c02 emissions has clearly gone up worldwide...

The hole in the ozone layer had nothing to do with CO2.

The people of Vanuatu or elsewhere don't need a fancy definition. They have to live with the results of climate change every day and see what's happening. Even the folks on the Gulf Coast are starting to get these facts into their thick skulls. Chicago next? LOL!

You can talk all night long whether the current climate change is a natural phenomenon, is caused by humans, or is a mixture of both. In either case we'll have to find a solution or we're toast. And the solution is NOT to burn more coal. Remember the hole in the ozone layer? Only when it became so bad that people couldn't go outside anymore (for example in Australia) because of the radiation, the idiot politicians were willing to do something about it. Same needs to happen with climate change. The ultra rich are preparing themselves already. They bought up so much land in New Zealand that the country now bans foreigners from buying property.

You realize that climate change is a THEORY

The religious nut jobs say the same about evolution and that Creationism should be treated as an equally valid "theory". The vast majority of scientists worldwide are telling us that climate change poses a real threat, and then there are some clowns who believe it is a Chinese hoax. See what I'm saying?

but rather only parrot mass propaganda over and over.

I have a beach property for sale. Interested? :)

Yes, let's tax these luxury items, I agree with you. But let's also tax the biggest polluters like coal fired power plants, the oil industry and regular car owners. The latter simply to force them into buying electric vehicles. And expand public transport to rural areas. It has been done before and worked.

Then there should be no need for regressive punitive taxes that harm the working class.

Climate change will not distinguish between rich and poor. Since there are a lot more average folks than multi millionaires, it's unavoidable to hurt the working and middle class.

China will do that faster...

So what you're saying is that we should ignore the environmental destruction altogether and just blame China? Someone has to start to make some sacrifices, and it's certainly much easier for rich Europeans and Americans than for some dirt poor third worlders.

but unless Europeans are willing to take a _massive_ hit in living standards for the future

What makes you so sure that caring for the environment has negative economic consequences? Solar and other green technologies have become important job creators already. Doing nothing is not really an option, if you think about it. Ignoring the problem will result in the destruction of the planet.

Genealogy / Mary Barnawich (?) - Is my great-grandmother from Poland? [28]

Ancestry gives you access to the U.S. Naturalization Records. You might want to try their free trial. In the meantime, can you give us the surname of your great grandfather (or was it Barnawich) ? Maybe one of us can help. Starting with the Social Security Death Index might also be an option to get at her exact birth place.
